  1. Why we should all go mute v2:
  2. -----------------------------------
  3. Our main form of communication is through spoken language. Speaking gives us an instantaneous method to express our thoughts to each other—often considered to be beneficial. However, immediate speech disinclines us from considering our words before we speak, allowing us to say whatever comes to our mind without a filter. This means we often say things in order to satiate our emotions, rather than to express our thoughts. By getting rid of this instant type of language, we make sure every sentence is thought out step by step before it’s completed and shared, which helps us avoid hateful speech only said out of spite or anger.
  4.
  5. Purely written language is inclusive to everyone, even deaf or blind people: deaf people are able to read the written text; blind people can hear synthesized versions of it. This is better than normal voiced speech—current speech-to-text is prone to error whereas text-to-speech software and written text are both easily understandable. Furthermore, written language helps people with developmental illnesses which might impair their ability to speak as cohesively as others. Including all members of society in everyday communication is much more positive than the current norm, where language mediums such as sign language or braille are considered optional.
  6.
  7. Inclusivity is also important in academia, as often people with different challenges throughout life have wildly different ways to approach the same core idea. Saddeningly, people who have hearing or sight impairments struggle to do as well in academic situations as others, since lesson content is geared mostly towards those who can speak and hear. By changing the main form of communication to a written format, more people are accommodated into learning environments; additionally, by teaching through pure text, you avoid problems where noise makes it hard to hear the teacher or where something obscures the view of the board.
  8.
  9. A valid argument exists that people who are blind would be completely lost when they are alone. Braille writing exists as an existing solution to this problem: blind people know braille, which can be extended to all aspects of life. Braille can be used as an alternative writing system but integrated into textual speech through modern technology, meaning that blind people are able to integrate into society the same as everyone else.
  10.
  11. In conclusion, I believe that creating a mute society would be of great positive influence to everyone. This is for the simple reason that it creates a more inclusive, more thoughtful community by default, allowing all people to contribute, work and communicate equally amongst each other.
