  1. Need hosting for multiple sites
  2. I have 3 Wordpress, 1 Prestashop, and 3 more sites for development or in process.

  18. At my current host I have a $22/mo reseller plan that has worked ok. I'm not a reseller, but I like the sites being segmented. The host crashed and will be down for an estimated 6 days, with an additional 3 days data loss from before the crash. They have 9000 customers and it's a smallish company.
  19.
  20. I need a much larger host who takes their systems, preventive measures, and recovery testing more seriously. This crash is costing me $1000 and more long term.
  21.
  22. I don't want to deal with managing Linux, apache, PHP or anything. I can handle cpanel and the website software (WP, Prestashop). I need each website segmented off so the developers I hire can't destroy more than one website at once.
  23.
  24. Therefore I believe I need fully managed VPS hosting. Do you agree?
  25.
  26. Is SNI and auto-generated SSL included with pretty much all VPS plans now, so that I can run several SSL sites off one IP?
  27.
  28. Liquid Host has 30,000 customers and a fully managed VPS plan, SSD, 4GB RAM, for $99.
  29. DreamHost has 400,000 customers and a similar fully managed VPS for $59.
  30.
  31. Any other top hosts I should look at, or specs or issues I should consider?
  32.
  33. Anything I'm wrong about?
  34.
  35. Yes, if you do not want to manage your server, then you can buy a managed VPS. It will offer more CPU and IOPS than your reseller hosting account.
  36.
  37. Yes, you can host unlimited domains and SSL certificates on a single IP address.
  38.
  39. In my honest opinion, $99 is overpriced for a managed VPS with 4GB of RAM. Good luck with your search.
  40.
  41. You can switch to another provider with guaranteed resources on a reseller account, or buy a managed VPS.
  42.
  43. Remember that for a VPS still license costs (cPanel, cloudlinux, ...) and a second/third server for backup and nameservers is necessary

  48. Ok, so cpanel, cloudlinux, and what else? I don't even know what cloudlinux is. I can't be messing with any of this. What else besides those two? Is that just the beginning? How many more pieces of software do I need to license? I don't know what other software is involved, or what I would need, or what is built into cpanel vs what was added by software packages with licensing. This is the type of thing I can't be spending time dealing with. I need a host that can take care of this.
  49.
  50. Same for a second or third server for backup or nameservers. I don't know anything about that and need a host to take care of it.

  55. Then I would either stay with a good hosting, or switch to a managed cPanel / WHM server. There are good providers for both
  56.
  57. Well, I say that the number of customers is the last thing you should worry about, as it is rarely proportional to the service you get.

  60. By that do you mean a managed VPS would be best? Is the cpanel and other licenses only if it's unmanaged?
  61.
  62. Cheap shared hosting seems like a bad way to go for me at this point. There was also some brief slowdowns on the site that may have been due to shared hosting issues.

  67. There are no licenses for a normal managed VPS. However, there is managed cPanel / WHM VPS too.
  68. There are some providers with a free trial, both Resller with dedicated resources and managed cPanel VPS

  72. I'm even more confused. If I want to use cpanel do I need to install cpanel and WHM and buy licenses for both? Would a normal managed VPS not include cpanel or WHM?
  73.
  74. Well, I say that the number of customers is the last thing you should worry about, as it is rarely proportional to the service you get.
  75. I don't really need service if everything works right. I need a host that is so huge that they have already dealt with every possible problem and have created systems to deal with all of it. Smaller hosts fly by the seat of their pants and make amateurish mistakes that result in 6 days of downtime like the one I'm with now.
  76.
  77. I chatted with Dreamhost more, and they don't even offer cpanel. Is that common? I have several sites, all on cpanel, and they can't import cpanel settings. It's going to be a multi day job for me to try moving everything.

  80. cPanel has nothing to do with managed VPS. There are vendors for managed VPS, and there are those who offer managed cpanel VPS
  81.
  82. Basically what I want to know is, what do business owners with multiple websites do when they want a robust solution where the server software is all taken care of by the host like it is for shared hosting?
  83.
  84. One reason I wanted a VPS is I need a way to backup all my sites, including ftp users, email, etc, and the WHM software on a reseller plan is very limited. I was told the VPS version will give me access to all its features like backups.

  89. That's partly true. End customers on our Servers also have access to their backups (files, database, e-mails, ... can be individually restored)
  90.
  91. But of course you can manage more settings with your own server. Then you have to manage your VPS (server) yourself, and manage your cPanel yourself (security, updates, backups, ...). Or you are looking for a provider who sells managed cPanel server
  92.
  93. The host crashed and will be down for an estimated 6 days, with an additional 3 days data loss from before the crash. They have 9000 customers and it's a smallish company.
  94. Not to add a dark cloud to this, but do you have any backups of all the websites that are your clients? From what I've seen over the years...anytime a host mentions such issues, and then mentions a time frame, it tends to be the time the "host" can transfer all their money out of any online or bank accounts, and jump ship. In many cases, it also turns out that the "host" also owed money, and the downtime was actually the provider suspending them.
  95.
  96. In any event....please have backups...and a plan B...and don't rush into the plan B too quickly, as that can also result in running into a similar type of "host"

  100. In many industries, the number of customers does affect the service given. Small to medium companies (that are honest) will give customers special attention, and treat them like a real customer, and sometimes like an extended family member. Once the host or any company expands, which should be a good thing, things go south. Now there's more customers and less people to support them. More customers, more stress on the operation. It's the classic growing pains that all companies go through, and sadly not all are prepared for it, and in some cases such expansions have damaged companies.

  106. A backup solution can be implemented on Shared, VPS, or Dedicated. When I was a reseller, I had a basic script that I found and modified for my needs. It would run daily and backup my clients websites to an unmanaged VPS via ftp, and a second copy to a Gmail account (large free storage). At the VPS and Dedicated level, you can either create your own backup solution, or look up what options exists...but at any level, do check periodically that the backups work.

  108. Hello, squeebo! Did you find a solution? I think Windows VPS is a good option if you don't want to manage with Linux. Windows VPS is already provided with licensed OS and it's easy to manage with it. For 3 Wordpress, 1 Prestashop, and 3 more sites you can give a try a Windows VPS hosting plan with 4 vCores CPU, 4 GB RAM or more and 200 GB Storage. It can fit your requirements and needs.
  109.
  110. Either Windows or Linux should suit your needs well, most VPS providers will set you up with some kind of control panel on either OS, such as cPanel or Plesk, which will make installing your basic content management systems like WordPress a cinch. $99 /month for those specs is a little high, is that fully managed? Definitely compare the differences between managed and un-managed VPS when doing your research.
