  1. If you are thinking about buying a mechanical keyboard and want us to help you choose, format your post as follows.
  2.
  3. >Budget
  4. >Location (continent at least)
  5. >Preferred switch type
  6. >Layout
  7. >Form factor
  8. >Backlight
  9. >Previous/current keyboards
  10.
  11. -----------------------
  12.
  13. 1) Budget
  14. Mechanical keyboards aren't cheap.
  15. Stock prices start at around 60$ for cheaper boards and can go over 250$. If you live in Europe add ~30$ to the price (+ possible customs and shipping costs). You can get better value at sites where you buy directly from small businesses such as Aliexpress and Banggood in exchange for questionable return policies and usually long shipping.
  16.
  17. 2) Location
  18. Availability of keyboards varies between continents, as do purchase possibilities.
  19.
  20. 3) Preferred switch type
  21. Clicky switches in stock boards often produce a rattly high pitched sound (e.g. blue switches) and tactiles (aside from a select few such as MX Clear) aren't really tactile. It's generally recommended to just stick with linear switches in prebuilt boards or get a hotswap and change them out for some decent tactiles like Zealios or Outemu Ice. Kailh Box are all around good for clickies, linears and tactiles. If you're not sure about a certain switch at least specify if you want tactile or linear, clicky or silent and hard or soft.
  22.
  23. 4) Layout
  24. Mostly ISO or ANSI. Be aware of the fact that the selection of keyboards and especially aftermarket keycaps is far greater for ANSI.
  25.
  26. 5) Form factor
  27. Specifies the amount of keys your keyboard will have:
  28. - 100% - full keyboard with function keys, navigation section and numpad,
  29. - 80% or TKL (tenkeyless) - usually without numpad, but there are also keyboards without arrows instead,
  30. - 60% - no numpad, function and navigation keys are on a function layer.
  31. - 65-75% - different variations of previously described.
  32.
  33. 6) Backlight
  34. Do you want LEDs.
  35.
  36. 7) Previous/current keyboard
  37. If you want something similar to your previous keyboard, or perhaps the exact opposite of that.
