- Hello! My name is Mike. Friends, Coloradans, Countrymen, lend me your ears.
- ...No, wait, that's not right... erm. Four years and several scores ago, our
- faculty brought forth on this land a new school conceived in liberty and
- dedicated to the proposition that all students are created equal. ...Wait.
- Three! It was three years … ago... oh, nevermind.
- I don't know about you, class of 2010, but I am plumb-tuckered out. We have been
- through so much. We've had to endure tough teachers... all-night homework...
- Legend has it that the bravest of our brethren were forced to produce ten...
- twelve? Even fifteen-page papers!
- But you know what? We've finally reached the end. Congratulations. Was it worth
- it? I think so. And because of our academic success, the only thing we have left
- to finish not too far from now... is... college. Some of us will choose this
- path. And sadly enough, CSEC won't be able to hold our hands. But let's not let
- that stop us. After all, college is still a ways off, right? We have an entire
- summer to enjoy! The calm before the storm, hmm?
- Believe it or not, I think a good rainstorm is the most magical part of the
- summer. Listening to the pitter-patter of the droplets splatter on the
- rooftops... Hearing the booming thunder as it rolls over the plains... The best
- part is walking outside and smelling the fresh smell of water-soaked grass.
- It's a shame that many people get caught up in the gloominess of rainstorms.
- Sometimes, all we can see are dark clouds and ruined picnics. It's true –
- everyone will face a gloomy storm in their lives at one time or another. Perhaps
- it's losing a job, a failed relationship, or dealing with an illness. There are
- also storms that affect our country. The United States is going through the
- largest recession since the Great Depression. A number of our parents are having
- difficulty finding work. There are also storms that affect the world, such as
- the oil spilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
- It's not all bad, though. With storms come the promise of new life. Plants need
- rain to survive and to thrive. Storms provides water for humans to drink. How
- ironic it is that the darkest clouds can be necessary for our survival.
- Some of us feel that we went through thunderstorms at CSEC, but I want to thank
- the staff and faculty for holding umrbellas over us so we weren't washed away.
- In particular, thank you, Mrs. Vanderbeek for teaching me the difference between
- “your” versus “you're” and “there” versus “they're” versus “their.” And thank
- you, Mrs, Falco, for showing us the tones of Gregorian chants.
- We would be here all night if I were to list the torrent of other faculty and
- staff who were so helpful to me. Think of the people who helped you during the
- last three years – your favorite teachers; Carol the lunch lady; and your
- parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. We wouldn't have made it without their
- help.
- Finally, I want to close with a quote from one of my favorite philosophers.
- Because of course, a graduation speech would not be complete without a quote
- from a favorite philosopher: “The storm starts when the drops start dropping.
- When the drops stop dropping, the storm starts stopping.” – That was Dr. Seuss.
- Seriously, Class of 2010, don't spend all your time worrying about the dark
- clouds in your life. Learn from those who've helped us and be sure to hold
- umbrellas for others. Look to the future, but enjoy the moment; because as Adam
- Young wrote, “Life isn't how you survive the storm, but how you dance in the
- rain.”
- Best wishes, Class of 2010.
