Garlic Street runs a bit further to the east where it ends near the Harbour gate, and also bends southwest towards more friendly areas. Only one shop is doing business here and no wonder, taking into account the poor condition of the buildings and road here. Shadows lurking behind the corners make it a rather unpleasant place to be.

  81. The large, black, leaden gateway that forms the seaward portal of Djelibeybi's capital dominates this crossroads. Inscriptions have been carved into the towers surrounding the gateway praising Khefin, who is Himself illustrated just to the north on the Road of the Sun. The majority of traffic at this crossroads is along Garlic Street, which leads off to the west, curving its sandy way to the city's market. The narrower streets of Ephebe Road and the Road of the Sun lead off south and north respectively, through this run down part of the town.

This is the narrowest point of the Road of the Sun; not because the line of buildings is any closer to the frescoed city wall here, but because a number of semi-permanent seats have been placed outside the front of the Rising Sun Inn, which forms the ground floor of one of the houses here. Across from the inn, Khefin, the Two-faced God of Gateways is painted, looking both north, to the illustrations of day and south into the dark gateway that leads off to the harbour.

  314. The Road of the Sun is narrow and cramped at this point along its journey round Djelibeybi. The terrace on the west side of the street and the painted wall on the east side seem to lean in over the alleyway as it journeys north and south. The street is littered with a few bits of food and wrappings, desiccated by the desert sun. Some of the litter has become stuck in the holes where there seem to be paving slabs missing.

  333. Two large palms lean over the Road of the Sun here as it is joined by the disreputable Sickle Street coming from the west. Beyond the palms, to the north can be seen a narrow grassy recreation area across the road from the city's surrounding wall. The flagstones of the Road of the Sun are cracked and uneven here, and get worse to the south, where a lively street bar can be seen. The southwest corner of the junction is occupied by the weathered corner to a terrace of buildings leading south and west.

  349. A dingy looking shop seems to lurk on the northern side of the street. At some point a resident of the Road of the Sun had decided to try and brighten up the junction with Sickle Street by placing down a selection of pots full of flowers. All they managed to achieve, however, was a pre-emptive glance of the desolation to come. The street seems to breathe gloom and doom.

The gardens are little more than dumping grounds for residents and even the trees here seem to crawl out from the ground and hang overhead like claws waiting to pounce. Sickle Street is not a particularly nice, or safe, place to be.

  390. The junction with Phoenix Road is flanked here by some extremely run-down flats. Broken shutters hang from the windows resting upon the flaky paint-work of the walls. Their barren gardens wither behind crumbling walls and only a worn path leading to the westerly flats indicate that they are still inhabited. It can only be hoped that the residents are more desirable than the building. On the road outside these buildings stands a surprisingly clean looking well.

  406. Three streets join here creating a small square, or a triangle rather. Sickle Street comes from the north, Garlic Street running southwest and east, south of here, and Phoenix Road itself, which continues west where it gets considerably narrower. This had to be a marvellous spot once. There is enough room here for a small parade, yet there are only a few people present at this time. The houses surrounding the square have long been abandoned, and left to decay in silence. The central spot is occupied by a large pedestal, around which a circular stone bench has been constructed.

  423. Phoenix Road runs between some ruined houses on the north and west, and a wall of a tall building to the south. A small patch of catnip can be seen growing wild next to the road here, surrounded by some rather happy cats. There is hardly any activity here, but some people can be seen entering or leaving the houses. Also, various sounds are reaching the street from behind the wall to the south.
