- Chuck Fletcher’s Wild went 359-265-80 (.567) with six playoff berths over nine seasons.
- Here's a look at his tenure.
- Fletcher’s best moves
- Acquiring Devan Dubnyk on Jan. 14, 2015 for a third-round pick: With the Wild at the bottom in the NHL in save percentage and free-falling, Dubnyk went 27-9-2 with a 1.78 goals-against average and .936 save percentage to save the Wild’s season and be named a Vezina Trophy candidate. He’s the second-winningest, regular-season goalie in the NHL since.
- Acquiring Nino Niederreiter at the 2013 draft for Cal Clutterbuck and a third-round pick: Niederreiter is a three-time 20-goal scorer and scored the Western Conference quarterfinals-clinching goal in overtime of Game 7 against Colorado in 2014.
- Signing Eric Staal to a bargain three-year, $10.5 million contract: After leading the Wild with 28 goals in 2016-17, he matched Marian Gaborik’s franchise-record of 42 goals this past season.
- Finding and signing Jared Spurgeon: After the defenseman wasn’t signed by the team that drafted him, the New York Islanders, the Wild invited Spurgeon to development camp, then the Traverse City prospect tournament in 2010 before signing him. He ranks fourth in Wild history with 509 games and second all-time among defensemen with 205 points.
- Signing Zach Parise and Ryan Suter in 2012: Disregarding the 13-year contracts that arguably have handcuffed the organization, the Wild went from missing the playoffs four consecutive seasons to making the playoffs six years in a row. Parise is the third-leading goal scorer (139) in Wild history and fifth-leading scorer (275 points). Suter’s 255 points are first among defensemen.
- Fletcher’s worst moves
- Acquiring Cam Barker and Kim Johnsson for Nick Leddy’s rights: Fletcher has admitted this error over and over again.
- Acquiring Martin Hanzal and Ryan White before the 2016-17 trade deadline in a package that included a first- and second-round pick: Bold move and he swung for the fences in a year he felt the Wild were Cup contenders, but Hanzal never seemed the right fit and hindsight being 20/20, the Wild lost a first- and second-round pick for a single playoff victory.
- Trading Jason Pominville and Marco Scandella for Marcus Foligno and Tyler Ennis: We all understand by now the “why.” The Wild needed to create cap space last summer and this accomplished that feat. But the result of the trade was Foligno eventually signing a four-year deal at an overpriced $2.85 million per, Ennis having a poor 22-point season and possibly soon to become the Wild’s third buyout since 2015 and the Wild lacking a trusted third left-shot D all season long.
- Signing Martin Havlat as his first big free-agent signing: Just never integrated into the season. He wasn’t happy here, particularly with his ice time under coach Todd Richards, and he ultimately was dealt for Dany Heatley.
- Take your pick from the following: Not finding a way to execute a trade for Ryan Johansen, Jonathan Drouin or Taylor Hall; signing Kyle Quincey last summer in the latest move for a depth defenseman or forward (Chuck Kobasew, Darroll Powe, Brad Staubitz, Eric Nystrom, Matt Cooke, etc.) that should be able to be developed within the organization; signing Mike Reilly to an identical two-year, one-way contract to Gustav Olofsson last summer, then letting his waiver-exempt rights expire in December; not finding a way to sign Kirill Kaprizov before he signed an extension through the 2019-20 season in the KHL; Assembling a forward group full of lefties this season.
