BECAUSE OF THESE PORTRAYALS IVE LIKE, AVOIDED THESE AS A WHOLE SO I DONT END UP JUST DISAPPOINTED AND DISGUSTED. on a more serious note it's disheartening that bl and gl have such disgusting creators and consumers. i don't mean to say that all bl and gl is catering to those who fetishize lgbt, but many of the mainstream works are gross. ereri and otabek are popular yet not cannon however they're pedophilic relationships (am not sure still about ereri since i believe they did a huge timeskip recently but that doesnt change the fact people were shipping him while he was underage). but there's a lot of cannon works that are saddening. it's very orientated on like, rape and sexual assault but then they realize they love that chara so it's suddenly okay. such as junjou romantica. which to me, reinforces to straights that "oh shit! lgbt people are rapists and pedos". this is not how a relationship works regardless if it's straight or gay. there's the stereotypical male-female relationship despite them being same sex. while yes, couples that are butch/femme and such exist and that's okay. however we often see in mainstream works a character that takes on "the male role" and a chara that takes on "the female role". it's become a staple for popular animange to take this approach. it tries to code gay relationships as straight. there's also apparent transphobia within the community which is due to said "roles". love stage for example the main character izumi "makes a cute girl" or "tricked him into thinking he was a girl" etc. majority of bl and gl is also just straight up sexual relationships. and while there's nothing wrong with showing that yes, we too can express love intimately with such actions, it also to me feels like it's belittling. that being gay is just sex. you rarely see cannon bl and gl that is just like a wizard and his bf having to save the world or two cute girlfriends and their daily life that doesn't constantly revolve around "oh i like girls and i'm embarrassed to tell anyone or else they will look down on me". you get things like mikayuu which definitely panders to bl shippers but it is not cannon. and therefor leaves it open ended.
