  1. Chapter 1 - Temples of Melil:
  2.
  3. Syrinx was a man who is known as the founder of the Bardic school of magic, although the truth he is is only the one who had rediscovered the ancient technique.
  4. He was bestowed his powers by Milil, the Deity of Song and Poem.
  5. Among his adventures as a traveling bard, he took a wrong turn down a road leading into a mountain cave. Knowing he now had another day's travel ahead of him,
  6. he decided to stop in the cave for the night. The cave was adorned with decrepit statues of people in robes with various instruments in their hands.
  7. Hearing nothing but the sound of rushing water, he assumed it has been abandonded. After calling out if anyone was there multiple times with no answer,
  8. he decided that he can not venture forth any more as it was getting dark outside and the road ahead is dangerous. Even though he felt an eerie presence in this
  9. cave, he made his camp inside and quickly dozed off into slumber.
  10.
  11. During his sleep, he was met with the Priests of the Temples of Milil in his dreams. They told him of what the place once was and the ancient art of Bardic Magic.
  12. They told him that this cave was once the Temple of Milil. It was a temple devoted to life, peace, and the knowledge of music. It was a safe haven for all bards, evil or good, of any race and creed.
  13. All bards held Melil in high respect and dare not desecrate her temple.
  14.
  15. After being discovered by the nearby town of Highwater, the king found out of this school of magic previously unknown to most men, mostly being kept secret in fear of persecution.
  16. The king and the elder council were convinced that this magic may prove too powerful of a tool and must be vanquished from the realms in order to keep their dominance of the land
  17. absolute. A crusade had made an appearance at the temple and slaughtered everyone there, destroying what they could, making sure that nothing could arise from the ashes.
  18.
  19. A law was soon after passed that the owning, playing, or distributing of musical instruments was forbidden in the realm and would be punished by death. Soon, the school of
  20. Bardic magic was basically eradicated, only known by a few hermits in the far reaches of the realm without much of any contact with the world.
  21.
  22. After this dream, Syrinx was abruptly awoken. As he opened his weary eyes, he saw a beam of sunlight peak through a crack of the cave wall which illuminated
  23. a beautiful, intricatelly designed wooden lute, made from a wood never before seen by mortal eyes. He felt a presence move through him and he was all of a sudden
  24. convinced that he must pick this lute up. After picking up the lute, he admired it's beauty for a moment before feeling a drive to play it. As the notes fell from
  25. the instrument onto his ears, he heard the Godly sounds. As he continued playing, he felt a strong magical feeling flow through him. His skills were suddenly immaculate,
  26. the music was perfectly crafted and created from his fingers through the instrument with ease. The creatures of the cave started to sing in unison with the sounds of his lute.
  27.
  28.
  29. Chapter 2 - The Oracle:
  30.
  31. After this magical experience, Syrinx rushed to the next town at dawn. With his new found powers, he feels as if he has some super-natural meaning in life and must
  32. fulfil the purpose which he feels he has been gifted. He does not know exactly what that purpose is yet, but he has a strong urge to fulfil it.
  33.
  34. As he arrives at the next town, seeing as he is strapped for cash and needs to eat, he performs his duties as usual at the local tavern, although with much more
  35. skill and apptitude than anyone in the humble town has ever seen. As Syrinx finishes up for the night, with more money than he has ever made in a single night, orders
  36. a room at the tavern for the night (uncommon for him as he usually just has enough to camp for another night).
  37.
  38. As he dozes off to sleep, he is met with another very lucid dream. He comes to in this dream at the top of a mighty spire above the clouds. An old man is turned
  39. away from him looking out of the window of the spire. He welcomes Syrinx to join him for a conversation. The old man explains that he is the trusted Oracle of Milil.
  40. He explains that Syrinx was chosen to bring back the safe haven for bards. The bardic knowledge is all but lost and he must bring it back. Times have changed
  41. and Milil feels as if the races of the land will be more accepting as knowledge of the arcane arts has been more established and accepted over time.
  42. The Oracle then offers his hand to Syrinx and invites him off of the spire. Syrinx takes his hand and in a flash (literally), Syrinx is witness to the old temple
  43. at it's peak. He sees the greatest bards in performance and the droves of bards from every race and creed celebrating and cheering together. Syrinx falls to his knees
  44. and tears fall upon his eyes. He know fully understands his purpose in life and is more than willing to accept the taxing and arduous journey ahead of him.
  45.
  46. The Oracle teaches him a few spells and techniques to aid him in his quest and sends him on his way, telling him to pray to Milil any time he needs guidance and
  47. Milil will show him the way.
  48.
  49.
  50. Chapter 3 - The Orphanage
  51.
  52. As Syrinx awakens, he rubs the sleep from his eyes and immediately prepares himself for what is to come. With the money he recieved from performing the night before,
  53. he stocks up on food and supplies from the tavern and general store and heads back to the town of Highwater, where he initially grew up.
  54.
  55. After a couple days of travel, stopping at the temple once again to pray to Milil on the way, arrives at Highwater. He hastily makes his way to the orphanage where
  56. he once resided. Once he catches up with the old lady that raised him along with the other children, he tells her of his plan and seeks her guidance and support,
  57. as she is the one that he trusts to believe him the most. He goes on to explain what he saw and the dreams he had. She knew he had a gift from a young age and
  58. expected great things from him from the start. She believes him and asks how she can support his journey. He responds that he wants to open an orphanage himself
  59. at the temple and give meaning and purpose to the children of the orphanage, teaching them the ancient bardic ways and instilling the peaceful ways of the temple.
  60.
  61. She graciously accepts to support him. She goes on to explain to him that she has been feeling her age as of late and fate must have brought him to her at that time,
  62. as she was beginning to ponder what would happen to the children after she passed.
  63.
  64. A year has passed and Syrinx's plan was coming to fruition. Him and the children from the orphanage have been rebuilding the temple as Syrinx establishes
  65. the rules of the temple. The children are happy to oblidge as, besides the old lady from the orphanage, they have only known war, hatred, abuse and abandonment.
  66. In this new place, they are no longer lowly orphans in the slums of a high society city, but brothers and sisters, equal to one another, knowing only peace
  67. and fulfilment.
  68.
  69. Once the temple is rebuilt, Syrinx spends the next couple of years teaching his children the Bardic Arts. After Syrinx has taught his children all he knew,
  70. they went their seperate ways while a few stayed behind and formed the priesthood of the temple. The ones sent out into the world were to visit the lowly places of the world.
  71. The fencing posts, the slums, anywhere where they felt they could help and encourage those in need to come to the temple.
  72.
  73.
  74. Chapter 4- The Temples of Syrinx:
  75.
  76. Over the generations, in memorial to Syrinx and his great efforts, the temples were named after him, gaining the official name The Temples of Syrinx, where his
  77. lute was placed on display for all who wish to come visit and pay respect to.
  78.
  79. The temple is a secret place only known to bards, and that respect is kept among all who have come. It's location is kept hidden in the songs and myths of the bards.
  80. Most pay it no attention and the songs are thought of as legend and fiction. Only those who truely believe and long for such a place are lead to the temple.
  81.
  82.
  83. Epilogue - That Dark Day
  84.
  85. On the morning after the annual celebration of the re-discovery of the temples by Syrinx, The Lute has been noticed to be missing.
  86. As everyone was celebrating the night before with plenty of mead and ale, no one has any recollection of what happened or noticed anything suspicious.
  87.
  88. On this dark day, the priests of the temple have gathered and decided that they will split among the world and look for the lute, because if the lute is destroyed,
  89. or put to use for evil intentions, they may lose our favor with Milil and the bards may be persecuted once again. It is their duty to protect the lute and they have
  90. failed to do so, so they must make the journey to try and reconcile their mistake and keep their favor with Milil pure.
