  1. Maeth Rammas means, roughly translated Battle Wall.
  2.
  3. Little is known as fact about Maeth's life before joining SCION - Science for the Continual Improvement Of the Nation.
  4.
  5. We know that he was born in the CAPITY CITY (name needed) and that his mother passed away at childbirth. She was no one special or of note. His father was a decent bladesmith of little repute and supported the both of them.
  6.
  7. Maeth at some point joined the Northwest Thyme Academy as a way to apprentice under some mastersmiths and other masters of various crafts. Little is known about how his father managed to pay for it but one can guess based on the events that happened afterwards.
  8.
  9. After a few years at the academy, things were progressing well for Maeth. He had earned himself a place at the academy as a Tinkerer, someone who can modify existing tools to enhance them. This was an apprenticeship he had enjoyed the most and he was glad he was able to earn his keep at the Academy and further his training. We know Maeth wrote home to his father about it because the letter was archived afterwards.
  10.
  11. Hearing nothing from his father for approximately a year, Maeth made his way to the capital to speak with him on his first break. When Maeth arrived, he found his father's workshop burned down a long while ago. A neighbour spotted and recognized the lad from his days at his father's apronskirts and informed him that his father had saved for him a gift for when he would return to see him. It was entrusted to the neighbour after his demise, to be given to Maeth. A simple medium-sized box with a ribbon, inside his very own set of engraved tools for his craft.
  12.
  13. This is where information is hazy. We found evidence showing that his father, an elf named Lonnar, was loaned that money by an agent of some shadowy guild, probably a thieve's guild of some sort. On failing to repay, they took his collateral, his life and business. What's not sure is how his letter survived the fire and how the neighbour got the gift. Lonnar anticipating the attack is the logical guess but staying at guessing games is frustrating.
  14.
  15. On his return to the academy, Maeth threw himself in his studies. The works he produced after this time were remarkable and his masters spoke very highly of him when we interviewed them.
  16.
  17. When students are aged 20, they are often screened and interviewed by the academy for prospective work in special places, like us at the BUA. When Maeth turned 20 his masters screened him and petitioned him to join the BUA but we refused him on the grounds that he was not an asset that would add enough value to the Bureau.
  18.
  19. Outside the academy, we know Maeth found himself work with an organization known as SCION or the Science for the Continual Improvement of the Nation. SCION's work over the next 50 years fascinated many, especially in the later years of the organization as they breached into a unification of science and the arcane. What was particularly interesting was the LEGION branch at SCION, which attempted to combine the martial prowess of a trained veteran with their technological advancements.
  20.
  21. When the BUA had acquired SCION as part of their own organization, they interviewed all the members of SCION and asked superiors who they thought were some of their most competant workers, researchers, and scientists. Many had pointed to Maeth. He had been training as an Artificer for many years in an attempt to perfect his craft. The lead researcher for LEGION, an older gnome named Sinlin Rocksinger, spoke with adoration of his pupil. He spoke of his time with the others in LEGION, of his dedication to improving his combat prowess, of his time working with other groups within SCION to learn as much as he could about the other arts of the Artificer, now called for combining the science with the arcane rather than the specific context that Maeth was training for. That had been reclassified as a Battle Smith.
  22.
  23. During the interview with Maeth he showed up with his trademarked ribbon on his arm. He didn't offer an explanation nor did we ask. It lasted approximately an hour and he had demonstrated a few of the things that SCION and he had been working on, such as a few gizmos he showcased that replicated some simple spells, like Magic Missile and Burning Hands. Of particular interest was his "Battle Hound" that had been worked on. Battle Smiths had been able to imbue a companion for themselves to take into combat with them as an extra ally, an ally that was not a familiar or a summoned being from another plane nor one that was born on the material plane.
  24.
  25. After the incorporation of SCION into the BUA, Maeth and some of his coworkers within SCION were inducted as full-fledged members of the BUA. Other teams within SCION were reclassified as Alchemist and Artillerist and the "Battle Hound" was renamed to Steel Defender.
  26.
  27. SCION has since been redesigned as a combat arms research group within the BUA. The whole organization is devoted into furthering the art of the Artificer as a whole. Other members of the BUA have taken to training themselves on the art as well as people from outside the BUA. The BUA has kept confidential how they bring in people to become an Artificer, if there's any criteria at all asides the desire to learn.
  28.
  29. Since the incorporation of SCION into the BUA, other organizations have taken to training to become Artificers. Certain provincial governments have leveraged the BUA to train some of its soldiers, for example. We also know of some lesser organizations teaching the art as well as a few of the more questionable ones. As time passed, an Artificer could be seen in all corners of the realm.
  30.
  31. Maeth's time within the BUA was put to good use. He was assigned to a squad was tasked with finding a necromancer named Harold Lambert who had been poisoning farm animals and raising them as undead beings for the purposes of warfare. The group quickly dispatched his small army of undead critters while Maeth dealt with the necromancer himself. Despite his attempts to subvert, poison, and eventually stab Maeth, the necromancer was bound and apprehended by the group.
  32.
  33. Currently Maeth is in a party with 5 others in the BUA, on loan from SCION, with the task of finding a rogue wizard who is apparently convening with Abyssal creatures to subvert the power structure of the Republic. He has taken well to his role within the BUA.
