- the new confederacy gets ahold of nuclear weaponry and global tensions rise into a new cold war. nations increasingly join a paranoic race for military isolacionism
- 2027
- hostile fronts accumulate across the world, global commerce and advancements in civilian technology have all but stopped completely
- 2029
- as the global population dwindles due to rising global temperatures, most citizens in the US live in hub cities protected from increasingly common natural disasters.
- the scorching heat during the day prevents most methods of travel. driving between cities has to be done during the night via mostly lawless roads.
- those that can afford it often rely on mercenary drivers called chauffeurs to make nightly runs accross hub cities
- Kathleen "Kay" Wintersby in a chauffeuse who excelled in the most dangerous runs since a young age, until losing her copilot and lover in botched run for a local gang.
- she now does strictly civilian work in one of the better controlled stretches of road between the hub cities of New York and Harrisburg, living paycheck to paycheck
- without much to look forward to.
- OCTOBER 2029
- two days before halloween, Kay is driving a particularly rich client to Washington DC, returning from watching the drag races in Harrisburg. it's been years since she
- last accepted a job that involved taking a southbound route away from the oversight of the Northern Commonstate, but the pay was too good to turn down, and the client
- provided his own vehicle so she felt she had little to lose.
- her aprehensions proved founded, however, when they are attacked in the middle of the night by a gang of armed bikes. even though the bikers had unusually high powered
- weaponry for ordinary thugs, her skills hadn't rusted a day and she managed to deliver her client to washington safely, although slightly shocked with the bumpy and
- almost deadly ride.
- as he composed himself, however, the client reveals himself to be an envoy of the Washington Enclave govt, visiting Harrisburg in a search to find a worthy driver for
- a particularly high stakes mission. while he was coming back dissapointed to notify the commander-in-chief that no good drivers were found, he now believes he found in
- Kay the perfect candidate for the task, if only she agrees to it.
- while not inclined to accept any more risky business, the envoy convinces her to go to the white house and hear the offer. there, the president explains that his
- daughter, who was on a peace-mission tour of the southern states, has requested asap removal from Atlanta. for a chauffeur capable and willing to do the 4-day long
- trip to and back from the Georgian Republic capital, the reward would allow Kay to retire at once.
- Kay sleeps the day in Washington while pondering over the offer. That night, she goes to White House to refuse the job and go back hope with her usual check.
- as the conversation begins, however, urgent news arrive: one of Georgia's oligarchs declared that he will be marrying Washington's first daughter, two days from now in
- a wedding in Atlanta. while georgian news sources affirm that it's a consenting marriage of two young lovers, no official communication has been received from the
- first-daughter since. under Georgian law, once married she would forfeit all her rights to her husband and his nuclear-capable state.
- while the president all but panics, threatening to mobilize the whole guard in what could be the spark that lights a new world war, Kay has made up her mind and is
- already on the road, south bound. Her wrist watch counts the 48 hrs she has to rescue the first-daughter before the wedding happens. As she races across the backroads,
- she looks to a picture of the target, and can't help but feel that somehow the first daughter's e
