  16. Should I redirect them to some other new images, or to posts?

  18. Redirect users to an custom "Error" landing page stating the image is not available. You can use a "Go to Homepage" button to direct users back to your home page. Users will still be on your website and you are getting an internal click to reduce bounce rate. A "Go to Similar Posts" button is also an option.
