  1. “We have more than we think,” said Ana. “I believe I have one solid
  2. idea, at least. We’ve been wondering how Jolgalgan snuck poison into the
  3. halls of the Hazas, yes? Well---what if she secreted herself in with it? For I
  4. suspect it’s very likely that she infiltrated the Haza grounds and buried
  5. herself in that little hole for a day, or two, or more, waiting for the party.”
  6. There was a short, stunned silence.
  7.
  8. “Truly?” said Miljin.
  9.
  10. My eyes fluttered as I summoned the image of the little hole up in my
  11. mind. “That could work…” I whispered. “It was large enough, yes. Then
  12. when she heard the music and talking, she could just stand up, slip out,
  13. brush herself off, and join the crowd.”
  14.
  15. “And when the party was done,” said Ana, pleased, “she’d just leave
  16. with them.”
  17.
  18. “But how could she navigate the servants’ passageways up to the roof?”
  19. asked Miljin. “They were close, cramped, and dark.”
  20.
  21. “Well, Jolgalgan is an Apoth,” said Ana. “And we know Apoths have a
  22. fondness for self-alteration. When Nusis went to go look at Suberek’s
  23. corpse, remember, you asked if she needed a lantern.”
  24. Again, my eyes fluttered as I remembered the moment. “But Nusis said
  25. she could see perfectly well in the dark,” I said.
  26.
  27. “Yes,” said Ana. “Admirably simple, isn’t it?”
  28.
  29. “It’s… interesting,” said Miljin. “But not watertight. Still don’t know
  30. how Jolgalgan got on the grounds in the first place, ma’am.”
  31.
  32. “We don’t!” Ana said chipperly. “But I have a theory, though it will
  33. need researching. That’s where you come in, Captain. Would you please go
  34. about getting a list of recent Talagray Legion personnel, please? I would
  35. like especially for you to focus on enhanced individuals. Enhanced for
  36. strength, specifically---much like yourself.”

  41.
  42. “Oh, but we are,” sighed Ana. She returned to parsing through the
  43. papers before her. “I just have one last bit of information to figure out…”
  44.
  45. I eyed the papers. “And you’ll find it in lists of Legionnaires augmented
  46. for strength, ma’am?”
  47.
  48. “Naturally. Have neither of you arrived at it? Captain Miljin here ought
  49. to know, at least,” she said, grinning. “Being as it was his damned interview
  50. that tipped me off. Don’t you recall?”
  51.
  52. Miljin stared at her blankly. “No…?”
  53.
  54. “When you went to the medikkers’ bay and did your interrogations,”
  55. she said, “you were told the dead Captain Kilem Terez had been worried
  56. someone very unusual had been following him.”
  57.
  58. “Why…yes,” said Miljin, startled. “A…a crackler. That was what he’d
  59. said.”
  60.
  61. “And you thought the idea mad at the time—but what if it wasn’t?”
  62. asked Ana.
  63.
  64. My mouth opened in surprise—yet Miljin remained unmoved. “A man
  65. ten span tall was following this Engineer,” he said. “Around the streets of
  66. Talagray. We are to take this seriously?”
  67.
  68. “It’s very simple,” said Ana. “Jolgalgan got onto the grounds, made a
  69. hole, and secreted herself away until the party. But how did she get past the
  70. walls? Well, Din’s reports, and our interviews with our witnesses, have
  71. forced me to conclude that the only way our poisoner got onto the estate
  72. grounds was through the sluice gates.”
  73.
  74. I nodded as I began to understand. “But the sluice gates are heavy…”
  75. “Right! Yet someone very, very strong might have lifted the sluice gate
  76. just enough to allow Jolgalgan inside. And, Miljin, you were told that Terez
  77. said he’d been seeing a rather suspicious crackler about—one with yellow
  78. hair. And who else has yellow hair?”
  79.
  80. “Jolgalgan,” I said. “She has pale yellow hair…”
  81.
  82. “She does!” said Ana. “Because she is from Oypat. As is, I think we can
  83. now assume, this mysterious crackler who helped her break in. Two
  84. Oypatis, taking apart the Empire from within Talagray…The theory that
  85. Jolgalgan is out for some kind of bloody revenge for the death of her canton
  86. grows ever stronger!” She turned a page. “And thus, I now look through the
  87. list of all the folk in Talagray augmented for strength. We find an Oypati
  88. crackler, then we find Jolgalgan.” She paused, very briefly. “Along with
  89. any other collaborator she might be working with. I just need a name. Just
  90. one name to hunt down…”
