  1. Henry uses a range of language to try and influence his father in his letter, He uses a lot of pauses in his letter to make his father read it slowly and focus on the details, he also directly addresses his father multiple times. By saying “My dear father” we can see how much he cares about his father and the good relationship he has with him. Henry also attempts to make his father feel sympathy for him, where he says “It is now two years come October since I left you at Islington, but I hope, my dear Father, you will let me come home at Xmas” which shows how much he wants to come home and how much he misses his father. Henry says “Our bread is nearly black, It is made of the worst Barley meal and our Beds are stuffed with chaff” the use of alliteration of the letter B shows how negative he feels about almost everything.
