  1. The sport that I am applying motor skill learning skills and sport psychology principles to is rugby. My position in my rugby team is as a prop, so I am involved in activities such as lineouts and scrums. Motor skill learning skills and sport psychology principles can be applied to help develop these types of skills and my overall performance.
  2.
  3. Motor skill learning skills that I am already using in rugby are feedback and distributed practice. Sport psychology skills I am already using in rugby are goal setting and positive self-talk. Using these skills impacts my performance at rugby by improving my confidence and motivation to play. Using these skills help to improve my overall performance and to further develop my skills in rugby.
  4. After gaining Feedback externally from coaches, parents or peers I can learn how to correct and improve skills, and from doing so this helps me to become more confident in how I play knowing that I have improved. Before games, I can use positive self-talk to encourage myself and motivate me for the game by saying positive things and saying how I want the game to go. I also use goal setting for rugby to help motivate me to achieve what I am aiming for. This helps to motivate me because it makes me work hard to try and achieve whatever goals I set.
  5. I gained external feedback from my coach after a game and he told me that I needed to keep my back straight and my body low when scrumming. From using this feedback I practiced keeping low and a straight back at the scrum machine at training.
  6. I set a goal of trying to turn over the ball 3 times in the upcoming match. I worked hard at training to practice my ruck work to help me achieve this goal. In the game I succeeded in turning over the ball 3 times by setting the goal, which motivated me to do so.
  7. Before a game I used positive self-talk to tell myself that we are going to win and that I would play well and I would…
  8.
  9. Motor skill learning skills I use are feedback and distributed practice. These are used appropriately to cater for my stage of learning as I am at the associative stage for most skills I use in rugby and Distributed practice and Feedback is used in association to my stage of learning.
  10. Distributed practice is used well for my associative learning stage as it is used to help me improve my skills and develop my stage of learning. Feedback is used well for my stage of learning as I am still at the associative stage and I still need a lot of feedback from peers, parents and coaches etc. Gaining feedback helps me to identify what I need to improve on and how to do so. Distributed Practice is also used well for my associative stage of learning by training different skills instead of just one. At my stage of learning I can handle training multiple skills, which is why distributed practice is good for me and my stage of learning.
  11. At rugby training we used distributed practice, we practiced a passing drill and then a tackling drill and then a rucking drill all in one session. This was good because at my associative stage I could perform these drills and improve my skills using the distributed practice.
  12. Sport psychology skills that assist me and my teams performance are goal setting and visualization.
  13. Using goal setting can help to improve my performance by setting goals to work towards. By doing this it motivates me to work hard and train hard to achieve my goals. Achieving a goal gives a good sense of achievement which also helps to set more goals to work toward. Using visualization can help me and my teams performance by visualizing how we want the game to go. We can visualize ourselves playing well and winning the game.
  14. I set a goal before a rugby match that our scrum would win all of our own put ins. We ended up succeeding in this goal and did not lose the ball once.
  15. Before our rugby game against Macleans College I visualized our team winning the match. This succeeded and we did win the game.
  16. Current problems in my performance in rugby are that we are not winning often and our scrumming is not going well. Sport psychology skills and motor skill learning principles that can be used to rectify this are self-talk and feedback…
  17.
  18. Self-talk can be used to help improve our performance saying positive things about how I want to play and that we will win and our scrumming will be better. I can also use feedback that is given to me by peers and coaches about how I have been playing and how I can improve. I can take feedback from other people about my performances and think about what I can improve and train toward improving any skills I need to.
  19. If I gain feedback from a team mate saying that I am not lifting high enough in line outs I can take that feedback and practice it at rugby training by lifting as I would in a game and focus on lifting as high as I can. This would help to improve my performance in upcoming games just from gaining feedback from a teammate.
  20. I could use positive self-talk before a match to say that the game will go well and we’ll win and that we will overcome the other team in the scrums.
