  1. Magic the Gathering - Master of the Dungeon
  2. Inspired by Pcaoren's Dungeon Challenge
  3.
  4.
  5.
  6. What is this?
  7. Master of the Dungeon is a single player variant of MtG that ressembles fighting through a dungeon in an RPG. It is heavily inspired by Pcaoren's Dungeon Challenge, with some tweaks of my own.
  8.
  9.
  10. What will you need?
  11. -Yourself
  12. -Your Deck
  13. -A Dungeon Deck (see below)
  14. -A Mana Deck (see below)
  15. -A Boss Deck (see below)
  16.
  17. The Dungeon Deck:
  18. Should consist of
  19. -At least 30 cards.
  20. -A creature designated at the Boss Creature. There may only be a copy of it.
  21. -A Color Theme which is the same as the Boss Creature's color(s). If the Boss is colorless, chose two colors and make that the Color Theme.
  22. -Only creatures or spells that summon creatures. Any spell in the Dungeon Deck need to belong to the Color Theme (unless they are colorless).
  23. -The deck may contain any number of copies of a single card (except for the Boss Creature).
  24.
  25. The Mana Deck:
  26. Should consist of at least 30 lands that belong to the Color Theme.
  27.
  28. The Boss Deck:
  29. Should consist of at least 10 spells that belong to the Color Theme.
  30.
  31.
  32. Objectives:
  33. -Get the Boss's Hit Points to 0 to win.
  34. -Don't let the Boss's minions destroy you.
  35.
  36.
  37. Starting the Game:
  38. 1- Shuffle all 4 decks (Your deck, the Dungeon Deck, the Boss Deck and the Mana Deck)
  39. 2- Set the Hit Points of your opponent, the Boss, according to its Converted Mana Cost (CMC) using the following chart:
  40. CMC HP
  41. 0 6
  42. 1-2 5
  43. 3-4 4
  44. 5-6 3
  45. 7-8 2
  46. >9 1
  47. 3- You start the game like any regular game of MtG, with 7 cards in hand and a life total of 20.
  48. 4- The first turn is always the Boss's turn.
  49.
  50.
  51. The Boss's Turn:
  52. 1- At the beginning of the turn, the Boss draws X amount of cards from the Mana Deck based on their Converted Mana Cost (CMC)
  53. CMC Mana per Turn
  54. 0 6
  55. 1-2 5
  56. 3-4 4
  57. 5-6 3
  58. 7-8 2
  59. >9 1
  60. If the Mana Deck is empty, skip this phase.
  61. 2- The Boss draws a card from the Dungeon Deck. If they have enough mana to cast that card and is not restricted from doing so otherwise, they cast that card. If they don't, he puts the card at the bottom of the Dungeon Deck and repeat the process.
  62. -If they run out of mana, this phase ends.
  63. -If they draw the Boss Creature and they already have cast something that turn, the boss is left at the top of the Dungeon Deck and the phase ends.
  64. 3- During the Precombat Main Phase, the Boss will activate as many abilities of all permanents he controls as possible. If card can only activate one of its abilities (for example because it has two Tap abilities or because there isn't enough mana for two), the Boss choses the one that deals or prevents the most damage. This decision is based on numbers, so if an ability deals 2 and the other one heals 3, the one with the highest number gets activated. If all abilities are equal or do not apply in that sense, then the first one to appear on the card gets activated.
  65. 4- At the beginning of Combat Phase, the Boss untaps all creatures they control. All creatures the Boss controls attack each turn if able and attacking doesn't cause them to tap. You always get to choose how damage is assigned.
  66. 5- Once the boss is left without any other actions, their turn ends.
  67.
  68.
  69. The Boss Creature:
  70. -It can be cast without a cost.
  71. -It can only be the first thing to be cast that turn.
  72. -Once the Boss Creature enters the battlefield, replace Step 2 of the past section with:
  73. "The Boss draws a card from the Boss Deck.
  74. -If they have enough mana to cast that card and is not restricted from doing otherwise, they cast that card.
  75. -If they don't have enough mana to cast that card or is restricted from doing so, they put it at the bottom of the deck and the phase ends.
  76. Whenever a card from the Boss Deck would be discarded, it is put at the bottom of the Boss Deck"
  77. -You may never take control of the Boss Creature.
  78. -Whenever the Boss Creature dies or is exiled, it is put back into the Dungeon Deck along with all the Boss's cards in the graveyard and the Dungeon Deck is shuffled.
  79. -Whenever the Boss Creature dies or is exiled, the Boss loses 1 Hit Point.
  80. -The Boss Creature can only be attacked if there are no other untapped creatures on their side of the battlefield.
  81.
  82.
  83. Other Notes on the Boss Gameplay
  84. -During your turn, you decide which creature you want to attack (The only exception being the Boss Creature). The Boss attacks using the usual MtG rules, which is to say they attack you directly and you decide how to block the attack.
  85. -The Boss has no hand, therefore whenever they would discard a card, they put it from the top of their library into the graveyard. If the Boss Creature is sent back to the graveyard this way, discard an additional card and put the Boss Creature back in the Dungeon Deck and shuffle it. The Boss doesn't lose any HP this way.
  86. -If a card is returned to the Boss' hand, it is shuffled back into the deck.
  87. -The Boss has no life total. Thus, if the Boss Creature is not on the battlefield, all damage dealt to them is prevented. If it is, all damage dealt to the Boss is dealt to the Boss Creature.
  88. -Whenever the Boss would lose life due to an effect, put that many 0/-1 counters on the Boss Creature instead. If the Boss Creature is not on the battlefield, put them on the one with the highest toughness. If the battlefield is empty, send that many lands the Boss controls to the Land Deck.
  89. -Whenever the Boss would gain life due to an effect, put that many 0/1 Defender colorless token creatures on the battlefield instead.
  90. -Whenever the Boss plays a card with an effect that refers to "Target creature":
  91. -If it's a positive effect, it is their most offensive card.
  92. -If it's a negative effect, it is your more offensive card.
  93. -If it's a negative effect that can only affect them, it is their least offensive card.
  94. -If it's a positive effect that can only affect you, it is your least offensive card.
  95.
  96. || Whenever the Boss would make a choice of any kind besided the ones above, you make that choice instead. I recommend building the Dungeon Deck to avoid cases where you need human intervention ||
  97.
  98.
  99.
  100.
  101. I think that covers all.
  102. Please let me know if there is anything clear or if you have any suggestions.
  103. Have fun!
