  1. 1. Why do you wish to become a Sergeant Trainee? What can you offer to the Department as a supervisor?
  2.
  3. My reasoning for becoming a Sergeant Trainee is very straight forward. As I have spent the past 9 years of my life as a Deputy, I wish to progress further in this Department. This profession is something I care about, and the community behind it is what I care about. By becoming a Sergeant, I could progress further to help out the Department from a new position.
  4.
  5. This would give me the chance to display my experience to the rest of the Department. The experience that I have gathered over the 9 years I have worked here. The experience which I have already displayed to future Deputies and current Deputies, as a Field Training Officer. My experience includes many things, from the knowledge of the manual to how to handle people in the field other Deputies might not have encountered before. Assisting in difficult situations and providing the experience I have to better the quality of work in the Sheriff's Department and better the lives of the people living in Los Santos. I am also able to adapt to the workload and work needed to be done as a Sergeant, as I have a lot of different types of paperwork, may that be from a simple arrest report to a Daily Observation Report, or even grading an examination as a Recruit Staff Instructor Deputy.
  6.
  7. My experience is not only years of patrol, but it is also from the divisions, I am currently in divisions such as the Aero Bureau, Sheriff's Information Bureau, and Training Bureau. Although it is my first month with the Training Bureau Recruit Unit, I have learned several things. This is from simple details I might have missed out on, to how to be a better and effective leader. How to be an effective teacher, and add those things I have learned to improve my work as a Field Training Officer out on the field and in different aspects of the profession. Another thing I could offer is my verbal judo. Other Deputies might be courteous and friendly, but I have the skill to de-escalate a situation when needed. Verbal judo is vital in critical situations because you want to build a rapport with the suspect and discourage them from doing the crime that they are doing, or whatever situation you are in. It is important to build a rapport with people so that they are more likely to comply with you. Not only so people comply with you, but so you might even build a professional relationship with the person, and they will view the law enforcement community in a better way. This way, even Deputies who do not have the best of verbal judo, will be able to get the person to comply with them more, because of the positive interaction they had.
  8.
  9. To conclude over-all. I believe I have the sufficient skill set and things that I can offer to become a supervisor. Even if I cannot become one, I will try my best and attempt to improve and see how I can do better. Every day is an opportunity to learn and perfect yourself further in this profession. You learn things from everybody, every day.
  10.
  11. 2. What do you believe constitutes a good Sergeant? Elaborate on the skills, traits & characteristics.
  12.
  13. A lot of things constitute a good Sergeant. One of which is leadership. Leadership is an important skill for a Sergeant to have. There are many reasons for this, but if a Sergeant is not a good leader and no one listens to him, then he should not be a Sergeant. A Sergeant needs to be decisive and sure of what he needs to do and what he is already doing. These qualities make a good leader. In the field, a Sergeant must be a good leader. If Deputies do not listen to the Sergeant, or if he cannot get Deputies' attention or relay his orders or message properly, then he is not an effective or good leader.
  14.
  15. Another important skill a Sergeant should have is good verbal judo. I mentioned this above, in my previous question. The reason I am mentioning this again is to re-iterate the importance of verbal judo. A rapport is vital, between you and the suspect, to gain compliance or to have a good relationship. Which would deter crimes the person might want to do or is about to do because you have a good rapport with him. Therefore, a good rapport is very important. It also leads to more understanding between the general public and the law enforcement community. There is a mutual understanding of what Deputies and other law enforcement alike have to do to perform their jobs effectively and to a satisfactory standard.
  16.
  17. A good Sergeant must be able to take criticism. We are all human, and we all make mistakes. There is no point in making a mistake and getting mad when someone gives you constructive criticism on how you can improve. By being able to take constructive criticism, you are able to improve yourself not only as a Sergeant but as a person. This is an indispensable trait to possess, even if you are not a Sergeant.
