- Shadow of the Tomb Raider, short, unbiased review:
- With this closing entry on the reboot of the classic franchise we see a return to the famous fast-paced 'quick-time' sequences of the original games, this time without the quick-time buttons flashing on screen and with the player having to be able to take in the fast-moving action to know what the right thing to do is. This does lead to some major frustration, as some sequences require quite tight timing and placement of Lara on-screen (even when sliding down a slope).
- Beyond that the controls still need a lot of work - there are places where the contextual choices break badly - usually when trying to convert from axe-climbing a wall to an overhang or to cross a gap. In other places the controls were excellent, but the level designers went out of their way to purposefully break things and force you on to a set of rails (I'm looking at you, "Ossuary" challenge tomb).
- The exploration is wonderful, though the inclusion of piranha in some of the underwater areas - especially since they cannot be fought and the need to hide from them was not made clear - a forced camera move showing "you can hide here" makes no sense when they've already introduced the eel as an underwater enemy. I did not even realize the little school of fish was piranha until after they'd killed me the second time - I thought it might have been that I'd missed an air pocket on the first go.
- Final gripe - there are sections where the game will seize complete control of the camera for no reason - I can understand showing off the levels or switching into a cinematic, but taking control and leaving me fighting to move so I can get on with actually trying to solve the puzzle the ***THIRD*** time I've had to walk into the room because the checkpoint was much farther on that I'd managed is not a good thing. This did not happen just once or twice, but numerous times. And it was not just at a room entry - it actually occurred in combat a number of times, leaving me at the mercy of Trinity or the Cultists.
- PS: None of the staged battles are exactly fair and the end boss section required a bit of creative thinking to be able to actually complete - as it actually has places where you will do things like ***HEAL*** and then get one-shotted, despite having just healed. Be warned.
