>Sungjae hates staying in one place for too long, and unfortunately for him, that's what he's been doing his entire life. So he tends to spend more time inside his head than in "real life" and imagining all the places he desperately wishes to go. He was once adventurous, but as time went on and it became clear that he'd never leave Seoul, that spirit quickly faded. The space it left was filled with apathy, and he didn't seem to care about anything except the fantasies in his head. His perfect grades dropped and he began to skip school and wander around the neighborhood. The blank look on his face and the listless way he walked caused him to get accidentally mixed up with gangs. He saw that that was what his life would become if he continued on this spiral of self-destruction and forced himself to go back to school. His grades rose once more and he found himself with a new purpose: graduate with high enough grades to propel him out of Seoul once and for all. However, he was never very sure of himself, and the self-doubt nagged him, like it always did. He struggled between two polar opposites: the knowledge that he probably would never achieve his goal and the desperate wish to.
Despite battling his very own paradox, Sungjae tried to find the beauty in everything. When he started thinking too much, he'd sit outside and stare at the stars to calm himself down. He loved sunrises and flowers and the little things about the world that made it beautiful, because it gave him just enough hope. And this was the only thing others saw; his admiration for space and oceans and forests and smiles and perfect makeup and dogs. They only saw these things and decided that the rest of his head was empty - because he hid his dream from them. He hid his only motivation because he doesn't like when others know things that could give them an advantage over him - a side effect from the time of his life where he had been involved with gangs.
He often doesn't pay attention to the present, staring off into space or tripping over his own feet - only worsening his image. The only hint that something is indeed happening behind his eyes are the occasions where he lets out his "deep thoughts". So while his dazed appearance and unsure footsteps are what many people see, underneath that is a kaleidoscope of thoughts and dreams and imagination.

➣ Background:
> Sungjae's mother never regained her health after giving birth to him, and remains bedridden and unable to find a job. His father works in construction and gets just enough money to keep them afloat. He often bitterly says that he's thankful they never had another child, as the family would surely go under. Even as it is, they can barely support themselves. His father does odd jobs for a friend, who owns a bar, occasionally and gets paid in beer. He comes home every night and gets drunk, and when he's really drunk, he'll grab Sungjae by the arm and hiss, "Because of you, your mother is ill and we are struggling." Sungjae's mother hates this and always tries to defend Sungjae, and tells him that she doesn't blame him. But his father's words are always louder than his mother's. Sungjae's father wants him to get a job instead of go to school, but Sungjae just settled for working part time in a grocery store a few minutes away from where they lived. His father is the reason he's so quiet about his dream, but he tells his mother everything. On nights when his father goes to bed early, they'll stay up talking about all the places he'll go. He could talk with his mother for hours, but her energy always fails her before he can get his words out. He feels out of place in his own home and prefers to wander as much as possible until it gets dark. He knows better than to stay out in his neighborhood after dark.

He knows what his dad gets like on a bad day or when he's drunk - it's hard to tell if he's been drinking, because both moods look the same. His dad is cold to him, and hardly any better to his wife. He'll bring her meals and talk to her a little at the end of the day, but for the most part, it's Sungjae who takes care of her and talks with her.

Of course, he was suspicious after he was told to bring them to another person, but he did it anyway. He was let go after a different gang member took pity on him and explained, but he still had to do community service.
>He was also reprimanded several times when he was younger for stealing food because his family was struggling. He was always able to explain his situation and use puppy eyes to be let off the hook, though.
