Jaroth Kidnaps Sullivan - OOC Summary + IC Report

OOC summary:

-Evi spies on and for creepy tiefling Jaroth, breaks into Dhii's house to steal a feather.

-Jaroth has Sullivan use feather to divine intel on Dhii.

-Sully and Evi figure out Jaroth's up to loads of nefarious business, and they turn against him.

-Evi keeps working/pretending to work for Jaroth to get closer for more info.

-Sully instead ceases reporting to Jaroth, instead feeds intel to Evi, Dhii, Meep, and others.

-Jaroth finds out Sully double-crossed, kidnaps him.

-Sully held in a dungeon and roughed up by Jaroth, the orc Sik, the halfling Lassias, and a young boy assisting them.

-Navia shows up first, fights her way in and out to get Sully.

-Barravel and Nikki arrive later, bring the pair to the Lauder barracks infirmary.

Details of report by Tallulah Fullilove:

Overview of injuries of patient Sullivan: Bruises on face, arms, and front and back of torso consistent with unarmed strikes from an orc. Bruises on arms are consistent with defensive injuries. Small cuts on neck from a blade, and bruises around neck from strangling via tail. Injury on back of head from being slammed against a stone wall.

SULLIVAN: I was investigating Jaroth.

He's a prospector who's traveled in Amn and the Dalelands, with a mine currently in the Luskan region I believe. He also, as far as I've heard, is a warlock with a pact with a demon which has extended his lifespan. He's also trying to obtain a magical artifact, a locket, from Dhii Whitearrow, which could let him tap into the Shadowfell, likely to summon Shade minions.

I didn't know any of this when I agreed to work for him.

He tried to have me sign a contract in my own blood, the paper being enchanted to act as a tracking device, which I declined - instead he covertly placed a tracking spell on me anyway, which I later had dispelled without knowing he cast it until later. He had me read a grey feather for its prior owners, then to scry on it. I learned later the feather belonged to Dhii, and it had been stolen by Evi under Jaroth's orders. She broke into Dhii's home to retrieve it.

Then at some point I heard Evi say she thought he might be a slaver. His miners not willing.

She was trying to get close to him for more information, but also agreed to spy on other people for him. I warned Dhii and Meep, and Meep - Inquisitor Velmach, sorry - used his authority to let - order me break the non-disclosure agreement I signed with Jaroth. Then Dhii warded her home against intrusion after one of my warnings, and Jaroth hired Evi to break in again, which she told him she would do, but tried to stall for time.

I was writing my scrying reports to Jaroth in a way to be vague and useless. Padded with filler words and description that's - detailed but about things you could find anywhere or about anyone.

And I also found out one of the contracts Evi made with him, a verbal agreement, was that she'd act as his bodyguard as long as he wouldn't harm me in any way.

NAVIA: This is the same Evi he asked you not to tell about this?

SULLIVAN: Yes.

He grew dissatisfied with my poor work quality and suggested I might be 'sick' and need to meet a 'friend' of his. My intent was to see whoever this friend was, and then leave. Teleporting out if necessary. After alerting the company where.

Evi agreed to go into a mineshaft alone with him. I don't think that invitation goes to anyone else. He wants her alone.

I have seen horrific scarring left on people he's - harmed before. I also had a vision, from the past, of him - and an elderly halfling wizard - torturing prisoners for information. When I got to the meeting place with Jaroth, I recognized his friend as that halfling.

And I tried to excuse myself and leave. And Jaroth or someone started putting up wards against magic. Telepathy went first, the comm-stones cut out, then psychoportation - I couldn't teleport or access my Bag of Holding. I drew my dagger and tried to fly up to the ceiling, but then all magic and psionics was disabled.

The orc 'Sik' tried to grab me and I just - lashed out - I cut his arms. I tried to leave, Jaroth blocked the way, he drew a blade, a large blade, he cornered me.

BARRAVEL: And that's when the orc was killed?

SULLIVAN: No, not yet. The orc stood back and a young boy I hadn't seen before went and tried to tend to his wounds.

Jaroth disarmed me, and his his blade to my throat, and interrogated me on who I had already told about him and what anyone's motives were. I tried not to reveal as much as I could - it's hard to remember. The orc came over again and started striking me. So Jaroth stabbed him. Repeatedly.

NAVIA: Obey me and I will protect you.

SULLIVAN: Then Navia showed up. She drew a blade. Jaroth turned toward her. I tried to grab my dagger off the floor, he wrapped his tail around my throat. She tackled him, and I got free. He also cut his hand. And put the blood on me - a tracking spell. Barravel dispelled it.

(BARRAVEL confirms with a nod.)

SULLIVAN: And then Navia grabbed me and the boy and we ran for the stairs - he pulled away and wouldn't go with us. Then the halfling man jumped her, she threw him off, we kept running. The halfling's name - Lassias.

NAVIA: I never heard the name spoken.

SULLIVAN: I did, before. He was old, wrinkled, wearing robes, had an Amnian accent. Jaroth beat us to the tavern itself - the basement, meeting place, it was through a stone corridor past The Dead Fish tavern. He was bleeding. Navia had already stabbed him.

BARRAVEL: He was a spellcaster of sorts, yes?

SULLIVAN: Yes.

Jaroth told me not to tell Evi. And that wherever I go, he'll know. That he'd know whatever I do.

NAVIA: Rebel and suffer.

SULLIVAN: Not exact words. But the meaning. The bartender called him Jackie.

TALLULAH: The bartender called the boy Jackie, or called Jaroth Jackie?

SULLIVAN: Jaroth.

NAVIA: The boy whispered to me as I passed him. He said, 'Please help us'. I tried to bring him, the boy.  But he said he couldn't. Said we didn't understand. Jaroth might have something important to him hostage. He must be useful to Jaroth in some way.

The halfling that attacked me? He he didn't attack me until after I had already stabbed Jaroth and was trying to leave. I thought that was odd.
