- I am the shadow of the child who became me eight years ago.
- On a calm morning was the first time she felt the weight of a human life.
- Her house was in the mountains,
- on grounds that had nothing.
- She could not hope to have a childhood friend, and there was no place less practical for school or play.
- But even if it was boring, it was a serene place, a place where the water and the stars were beautiful, a place which held an important place in her memories.
- However, it was only beautiful in the summer.
- Winter in the mountains was harsh, and the mornings painful.
- Her father would drive her to the train station, but the windows would be completely frosted, and he would need to light the motor a while in advance, or the car wouldn’t move.
- 「BLANK, can you start the car?」
- While her father sipped his coffee after breakfast, she would go out to start the engine of the car.
- She went out by the front door, walked along the garden while breathing out a cloud of steam, and opened the door of the old sedan.
- As she usually did, she inserted the key, turned it, *vroom* and the motor roared.
- 『■■■■■--------』
- came a grating noise.
- It was not a human voice, but yet she heard a tiny groan of pain.
- Several minutes later, they found a creature under the hood of the car that her father had just opened.
- The interior of the hood was entirely filled…
- By small chains and a massive engine,
- tangled all in each other.
- It was not the best place for a mother cat and her two kittens.
- Under the hood, the three cats had rolled into a ball so as to keep warm.
- The mother did not have anything above her neck.
- One of the two kittens had been too close to the belt and was not moving. He probably died on the spot.
- The remaining kitten had half of its muzzle red with blood as well, like a stray dog soaking in the rain, and its breaths were whistles.
- The cat clung with all its strength to the chest of the corpse… no, to the half a piece of meat that its mother had become, though it itself probably did not have more than a few more minutes to live.
- 「The poor things---”」
- lamented the voice of her father.
- The cold of last night had been particularly bitter.
- After her father drove home, the cats had slipped into the hood, attracted by the warm engine.
- They had passed the night in the engine chamber,
- And the following morning, they had been awoken by the rotating belt.
- In the cars of the 80s, which weren’t very airtight, this sort of thing seemed ordinary.
- 「---Don’t worry. It is not your fault, BLANK.」
- The voice of her father was distant.
- On the grey and hairy coat of the cat,
- one could see the blood of its mother and its brother, and of the half of its own detached body.
- --ah, one could see its round skull--
- The tiny life was all stained with these spots.
- The cat, who did not seem to see anything, clung to the chest of its dead mother with all its strength and shivered.
- 「BLANK….? Hold on, BLANK---!」
- She squeezed the kitten to her chest,
- And she rushed to the house of her grand-father, who lived inside the mountain.
- She was shaking because of her guilt,
- Or she was confused because of her grief; honestly, even now, I don’t know.
- While holding back her tears as best she could, she carried it towards the workshop of her grandfather.
- Her grandfather was a Magician who could do anything.
- She herself had never seen “True Magic,” and she understood that they were just imaginary, fantastic tales; but if she trusted her instincts and not what she’d been told, she knew that he was really capable of accomplishing miracles.
- It was for that reason….
- that she thought that he was able to save it.
- 『You desire that I change the destiny of this kitten?』
- said the indifferent voice of the Magician living in the cave.
- “I want to save him,” she begged.
- The Magician, without even saying that it was not a bother,
- or that it was a grand matter that could change the world,
- simply realized the selfish wish of the young girl, like a machine.

- 『............ Aah.』
- When she awoke, she held in her hands a small body.
- The fur was frozen.
- The heat of the life had long since left.
- The tears that she had ordered herself not to cry then poured from her eyes.
- An immense guilt filled her heart like a gray sky without end.
- 『All these efforts in vain. Ultimately, it has returned to its initial state.』
- She could not understand what had happened.
- During the lapse of time of ten minutes, despite what she had experienced,
- the people that she had met,
- or what she did, she had returned to the place where she started, incapable of assuming her burden.
- The only thing that she was sure, was that a life meant to die could not be saved,
- 「Hey---is there someone here?」
- and that day,
- the girl who “I” am was born by mistake.
- ……..ah.
- However it is,
- all this fills me with nostalgia and I look forward to seeing what the future has in store.
- It is an old story, a fairy tale eight years old.
- It was the day where they met for the first time, an event impossible no matter the magic.
