ORLANDO, Fla. — Thieves who helped themselves to a medical scanner and some lab machines set for disposal behind Florida

Hospital may have picked up a truckload of trouble.

The equipment — half a million dollars’ worth — was used to detect a mad-cow-like brain disease, which could spread if it falls into

the wrong hands.

Which it has.

On May 3, hospital-surveillance cameras captured a white pickup with dark panels on the truck bed roll up and remove the medical

equipment from the hospital’s Center for Diagnostic Pathology, according to the Orlando Police Department.

The patient — a 52-year-old Winter Springs wife and mother of three — died nine days after the biopsy.

What's really strange about all of this is how hush-hush the media - with the exception of a few satirical blogs - has been. You know

they release shit like names before the police have time to even make a statement. We haven't gotten any updates about the

condition of the victim. Last night there was a gunshot at the hospital where the victim is that was reported over the police

scanner, but we haven't heard anything about that, nor have we heard anything about the guy whose face was eaten. Seriously

fishy.

Medical equipment used to detect a brain disease similar to mad cow has been stolen from Florida Hospital's main campus in

Orlando, Fla., and the equipment may pose a public health risk.

Hospital surveillance cameras captured footage of a white pickup with dark panels on the truck bed taking a medical scanner and

lab machines from the hospital's Center for Diagnostic Pathology on Orange Avenue, according to the Orlando Police Department.

The agency is investigating the May 3 theft.

The hospital was discarding the equipment valued at $500,000 because it had been used to perform a brain biopsy on a deceased

patient who ultimately tested positive for prion disease, a form of which is mad cow disease in humans.

Responding to rumors that were beginning to circulate, hospital spokeswoman Samantha O'Lenick said, "Florida Hospital has not

had a patient with a diagnosis of mad cow disease.

"However, within the past month, it did have a patient who underwent a [brain] biopsy and the pathology report came back

indicating that the tissue sample was positive for prion disease that suggests CJD," she said. Further testing is underway.

CJD is a fatal, degenerative brain disease that occurs when prion proteins in the brain become abnormal. In classic CJD this

happens spontaneously. That is if patients don't catch it.

On Labor Day, September 2, 1935, a major hurricane bore down on the Florida Keys, a string of islands separating the Gulf of

Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. The hurricane, one of only two Category 5 storms ever recorded in the United States, made landfall
