- 2. Hong organized a massive army which took control of most of China.
- 3. The Taiping government was taken down after a series of wars between the Chinese, British, and French.

- 1. The rebellious groups that formed in China put a lot pressure on the government.

- 1. The next 50 years China focused on increasing the quality of life.

- 1. China had many uprising issues and other nations took advantage by attacking them.
- 2. The US was worried trading would stop with China so they introduced the Open Door Policy.
- IV. An Upsurge in Chinese Nationalism
- 1. After being humiliated, the Chinese developed a sense of nationalism.
- 2. The people in charge of reforming China were arrested in thought of them being a threat to the power of China.
- A. The Boxer Rebellion
- 1. Chinese citizens developed a secret organization to fight for better lives.
- 2. The secret organization rioted many areas of China.
- 3. Despite the failure of their riots, nationalism was created from this.
- B. The Beginnings of Reform
- 1. The government eventually relaized they needed to make a change and they ended up developing their society based off other societies.
- 2. China still faced threats and conflict
