  1. - primary purpose of the article is to *serve the two-line struggle within the [maoist] ICM* and as such touches on some popular topics such as: how universal PPW is; how much relevance we should lend to lenin's particular conceptions vs how much maoism constitutes a rupture from lenin's thought; what is the importance of generating a Guiding Thought for a specific country's revolutionary path and what is the relation between individual leaders and this guiding thought; how the three instruments of party/army/united front should be built and how they should relate to each other; what is the role and form of the party itself, chiefly regarding its relative size and clandestinty; what is the role of illegality and revolutionary violence in prior to intiaition of people's war? etc etc
  3. I. this the intro
  4. - marx: proletarian party must be different and opposed to all other parties that have existed in history
  5. - lenin: “the unity of the proletariat in the epoch of social revolution can be achieved only by the extreme revolutionary party of Marxism, and only through a relentless struggle against all other parties.”.
  6. - aka A PARTY OF A NEW TYPE - bolshevik, combat organiztation of professional revolutionaries
  7.     = question: is the maoist party a new type of party of a new type??
  8. - mao - united front, armed struggle, and party building are the 3 Fundamental Questions
  9. - A BUNCH OF TOPICS in the struggle between marxism and revisionism - Class Struggle, Dictatorship of the Proletariat, the necessity of the communist party, necessity of revolutionary violence, scientific socialism and the very struggle against revisionism
  10.     - but the related concepts of the dictatorship of the proletariat and of the form/necessity of the party stand out,     and the former underlies the latter, so we're examining that one. deal with it!!!
  11. - in countries any country people's war is not happening (so like, almost all of them) the main task is to reconstitute the party in service of initiating people's war, which requires line struggle on what the party should look like in the first place
  14. Militarized party’s formal theoretical formulation started with mao and was built upon by gonzalo, but both dudes were using lenin’s writings and the experience of the russian revolution as raw materials for this synthesis
  15. Lenin started talking about seizure of power as the principal factor in revolution after the revolution in 1905, but had already been struggling with revisionists on related topics for like 10 years
  16. Bolsheviks differentiated themselves from legalistic, parliamentary parties of the 2nd international, which were led by intellectuals and, according to stalin, were the predominant force in the workers’ movement
  17. Lenin and stalin pointed out the necessity of ideological and sometimes even armed struggle against various parliamentary-minded factions, to be intensified as revolutionary struggle heats up
  18. Stalin says party must be militant, lead proletariat in struggle for power, experienced enough to solve problems in a complex revolutionary situation, and flexible enough to “avoid submerged rocks” in its path
  19. Lenin stresses that this party building CANNOT happen overnight but only over through class struggle (external) and two-line struggle (internal)
  20. Lenin leads two-line struggle against economism, liberalism, spontaneity
  21. Destroys martov’s idea that anyone doing party-associated work can or should be a member of the party
  22. Argues that communist party should be clandestine by its very nature, that limiting its membership to most steeled and experienced revolutionaries (willing to abide by democratic centralism) actually lets it lead more and broader mass movements
  23. Obviously mensheviks weren’t into these ideas, accusing him of shit like “blind discipline” and “followism(??)”
  24. In addition to arguing for democratic centralism against these clowns, lenin argues that secrecy is a necessary precondition for them to struggle against the government and avoid getting dragged down into pure legalism
  25. The possible errors in navigating the dialectic of ‘Strategic Centralization and Tactical Decentralization’ -- Over-centralization of nascent formations (expansions), enforcing supposed ‘demcent’ over a glorified social circle, goes in hand with over centralization from party core. Dogmatic to a party line before it can be called a vanguard (obv the opposite error is inherent, marxism vs revisionism remains the constant baseline)
  27. Makes important differentiation between guerilla/terrorist actions in general and guerilla/terrorist actions that are irregular and not organized by the party and integrated into the party’s work - the latter category is what he has negative words for, while in the right contexts these actions are actually based
  28. Central task = conquest of power, power is won militarily, therefore party’s most important job is welding the class into an army
  29. This requires learning by doing, starting with small scale military shit and building up
  30. - “without confining themselves to propaganda (which is useful, but inadequate” damn bruh
  31. - transition to socialism via “revolutionary civil war”
  32. - stalin lists 6 characteristics of the leninist party
  33. 1. The Advanced detachment of the working class
  34. 2. The Organized detachment of the working class
  35. 3. The highest form of class organization of the proletariat
  36. 4. The instrument of the dictatorship of the proletariat
  37. 5. The embodiment of unity of will
  38. 6. Strengthens itself by purging itself of opportunist elements
  40. Lenin develops party’s military line during the heightened period of armed struggle 1905-1907
  41. Lenin fought to link clandestine work with legal work in such a way as to combat both right and left opportunists of his time
  42. Also out here battling social-chauvinists supporting their country’s efforts in WW1
  43. Instead we must turn imperialist war into based civil war
  44. Marxists do not oppose all wars, only unjust wars
  45. Post october revolution, the comintern upholds various leninist party principles as prerequisites for entry, such as democratic centralism
  46. Lenin stresses that divorcing the party from the masses is a potential pitfall that must be avoided, that party must actually grow closer to the masses and imbue the masses with class consciousness through [stuff that sounds an awful lot like the mass line]
  50. Militarized communist party idea developed by gonzalo and PCP, based on teachings/experience of lenin stalin and mao
  51. Cannot separate ideological development from concrete organizational development, as they go hand in hand, have a dialectical relationship etcccccc
  52. So develop our understanding of MLM ideology, creatively apply that to the particulars of our class struggle (building the party in this process), which at certain heights gives us insight to add to the MLM ideology itself (bruhhhhh)
  53. This is what they mean by “the universal contributions of gonzalo thought” - GT is the guiding thought (aka the creative application of MLM to the particular conditions of) the peruvian revolution, but much like MZT before it, a few of its creative applications are pretty universally valid and as such are contributions to MLM itself / will potentially be baked into the definition of whatever 4th stage eventually happens, along with insights from people like ajith or joma or mike prysner
  54. -prior to PPW, all work is in service of initiating it. During ppw, all work is in service of the front (from mao, problems of war and strategy)
  55. - lenin was already talking about the need to capture Power and other military matters prior to 1905, but that experience really burned their importance into his brain when the party was hella unprepared for the revolutionary situation thrust upon them, and some of the Petrograd comrades just straight up declined to carry out their responsibilities in the december 1905 insurrection plan
  56. - so as early as 1905 the necessity of building the party around the gun (in mao’s words) was evident and its only more true today
  58. Lenin, like marx before him, emphasized importance of peasantry in revolutionary struggle - which translates to the importance of the united front
  59. -The seizure of power by armed force, the settlement of the issue by war, is the central task and the highest form of revolution. This Marxist-Leninist principle of revolution holds good universally, for China and for all other countries”54 - mao
  60. - contradictions from society and society’s class struggle manifest themselves INSIDE the communist party, thus the communist party and even individual communists must be forged by two-line struggle thooooo
  61. - construction of party and army/united front are interrelated in that party constructs latter two around itself
  63. PCP’s 3 fundamental reasons for militarization:
  64. 1. In the age of strategic offensive of world revolution, reactionary society is miltarizing itself more and more (very true in 2k20), and thus proletariat must follow suit and counter with its own military strategy, PPW
  65. 2. Guard against capitalist restoration by training each individual communist to stay alert for signs of restoration by an entrenched state bureaucracy
  66. 3. March toward militarized society where proletariat AS A CLASS (not just the party) can wield true political power (see lenin quotes about paris commune etc)
  68. -so a communist party must be able to: 1. Initiate ppw; 2. Develop ppw toward conquest of power; 3. Defend and develop dictatorship of proletariat, defend vs capitalist restoration
  69. - must develop the party with the FLUIDITY of revolultionary war
  70. - must think from an early stage about possibilities for conquering base areas (based on specifics of national economy+geography etc), potential for guerilla zones etc
  71. - plans are how we link our broad strategies to tactical operations
  72. - according to gonzalo, plans must consider:
  73. 1. International class struggle situation
  74. 2. National
  75. 3. The development of people’s war
  76. 4. Necessity to investigate
  77. 5. How people’s war is affecting construction of party/dotp
  78. 6. How people’s war is affecting the masses
  79. 7. The two-line struggle
  80. 8. Program and schedule
  81. 9. Attitude and slogans
  83. -construction is clandestine and combines construction of MOBILE NETWORKS and construction of TERRITORIAL NETWORKS (guerilla zones vs base areas)
  84. - through these processes, leadership is forged thru the class struggle and thru two-line struggle
  85. - leadership is important because, as mao says, sailing the seas depends on the helsman
  86.     - BUT it is necessary to note that great leadership depends on guiding thought NOT   vice-versa
  87.     - leaders can embody the guiding thought but they can also stray from it (see: prachanda). Also they can die. But the guiding thought, as well as MLM ideology, never dies, so neither does great leadership
  89. -construction happens around the gun, with war as the ultimate form of class struggle
  90. -- militarized party cannot fully exist without construction of front/new state and of people’s army, and concentric construction fo these instruments cannot be perfected without militarized party at its center
  91. - party is clandestine so chief forms of organization are army and the united front (after war is initiated and some territory is conquered, united front becomes united front and New State!!!)
  92. - none of this can be rushed because it must obey law of incorporation of masses into class struggle, ie that first there will be a small # of advanced masses down for the cause (usually the poorest and most exploited), and as more victories are won (and also as the country’s economic/societal situation deteriorates) more masses will be mobilized, allowing for bigger targets and victories --- cycle mode!!!
  93. - keeping party in command of revolutionary struggle helps the proletariat stay as the leading force in the revolution, even tho peasantry is likely the main force
  94. - PCP’s 6 characteristics of militarized construction:
  95. 1. Ideological - Militancy forged in unity around ideology
  96. 2. Political - militancy forged around party’s programme, general political line w/ military line at its center
  97. 3. Organizational - line is not enough, we must built organizational infrastructure to put it into practice (abstract stuff like democratic centralism, also tangible things like the territorial vs mobile networks)
  98. 4. Leadership - class promotes its leaders to the party, party promotes its leaders to central committee, central committee chooses its own leaders etc
  99. 5. Two-line struggle - manifestation of external class struggle inside the party, motor that propels party, left line must impose itself on the right
  100. 6. Mass work - the masses make history!!! The party leads the mass struggles, for which the conquest of power is the principal demand
  104. “As Lenin teaches us, in times of revolution it is necessary to form new organizations and go against the old leaders who are seeking to sell the revolution to accommodate themselves within the reactionary system. We can no longer, then, use the old forms of struggle and organization of the masses."
  105. (PCP – Mass Line)
  106. - if we’re gonna form or reconstitute a communist party, we need to know the Form of the party we’re forming, ie we must understand what a militarized communist party is
  107. - leading us to communism = struggling for power = armed struggle = eventually people’s war, therefore forming a party that can lead us to communism must be done with people’s war in mind
  108. - Concentric construction of the 3 instruments - party, around which is the army, around which is the united front
  109. - NOT just a political-military organization as has been popular in latin america at various points. This undermines the necessity of a dedicated communist party to lead the military.
  110.     - party must be in control of the gun, gun not in control of the gun - mao
  111.     - like a mind/body duality kinda thing, u want a brain with a body around it not just a totally decentralized nervous system going thru yr body like a got damn INSECT
  112. - revisionists like avakian and prachanda attack the idea of concentric construction, argue that military line is not at the center of the party’s political line, advocate for shit called “fusion theory” and “multi-party competition” and “socialism of the 21st century.”
  113.     - you really hate to see it
  114. - so whereas traditional latin american “armed revisionism” erred by combining the instruments into one amorphous blob, new “maoist” revisionism errs by separating them too much, denying the party’s rightful leadership - sometimes going as far as advocating multi-party bourgeois democracy
  115.     - As Lenin said, there are some who "want to invent something quite out of the ordinary, and, in their effort to be clever, make themselves ridiculous"
  116. -people will talk about people’s war while ignoring that its fundamental aspect is the capture of Power, building new power for a new proletarian state - the DoTP
  117.     - this power does not appear all at once but is built up bit by bit through the protracted  revolutionary process
  118. - haters will erect a “wall of china” between the unarmed phase of the revolution and the armed phase, like its just a switch you flip, whereas really its a gradual transformation with a nodal point (inflection point) at which the slope of the line dramatically changes, as it switches from principally unarmed (where we are rn) to principally armed (the situation during ppw). This nodal point is of course the initiation of PPW
  119.     - ie just because something is not principal doesn’t mean you can Totally ignore it; we can err by putting too much emphasis on secondary aspects but we can also err by being too one-sided and only focusing on the principal aspect
  120. - if we accept that educating ourselves and especially the masses in revolutionary violence is a protracted process starting small and slowly scaling up, how can this be done without a clandestine party apparatus? Some things must be secret
  121.     - no historical examples of a revolution that was fully legalist then just flipped da switch
  122. - smashing old state and building new state, bit by bit, requires various amount of secret work according to historical needs/conditions
  123. - must choose organization forms that connect communists to the masses, that defend the concrete interests of the masses, that forge leaders out of both communists and the masses, that allow for capture of power
  124. - full on legalism (“accumulation of forces” theory) leads to tailism, economism, right opportunism, revisionism
  125. - gonzalo warns that parties who wait years for armed struggle without practicing it in small forms first tend to divide and capitulate when the time comes, because they’re not ready
  126.     - “Armed struggle, as the highest form of struggle, inescapably imposes the need for the clearest political consciousness while at
  127.      the same time being the necessary condition for such advanced consciousness” - false nationalism false internationalism chapter 8
  128. - militarization can only happen via actions, principally armed actions
  129. - party must combine secret and illegal work with open and legal work, must be closed to reaction but as open to the masses as possible
  130. - through this combination of legal and illegal work, party educates itself and principally the masses in revolutionary violence, starting with simple and small forms, moving up to more elaborate forms as conditions allow
  131. - “war is the continuation of politics by other means” so politics/war cannot be separated
  132. - politics can only be done by those who have an army - mao
  133. - we do mass work in and for the people’s war
  134. - constituting party around the gun means that while armed struggle will be secondary at first, we know that it will eventually become principal so we make active preparation for this
  135.     - learn to make war by doing it
  136. - once constructed, the people’s army becomes the principal form that carries out mass work
  137.     - this is why it is an army of a new type
  138. - -4 types of military actions: 1. Armed propaganda; 2. Sabotage; 3. Selective annihilation; 4. Guerilla action
  139. - the masses violently rebel all the time in big or small forms, so it becomes a question of how to harness that energy and give it an organized form, rather than tailing behind
  140. - lenin: encourage masses already involved in violent activity to organize themselves into small groups, help arm them, do not demand that they become members of the party in order to work with them, try to keep them in contact with the party tho
  142. 3 tasks of the people’s army:
  143. 1. COMBAT (obv), both offensively and in defending previous gains
  144. 2. MOBILIZE masses for revolutionary activity, for which the army helps create united front /new state organizations
  145. 3. PRODUCE for the new economy, so as not to be a burden on the masses
  147. -each member of the party are both combatant and administrator, helping build other 2 instruments and forging their leadership via participation in all 3 instruments
  148. - cannot separate organizational building from its ideological / poiltical base
  149. - cannot use unprincipled unity to avoid ideological or political struggle, which lenin warned y’all about
  150. - ppw can only be initiated and developed by combatting both right and “left” opportunist lines
  151.     - but line is not enough; we must have corresponding organizational forms capable of arming proletariat and putting lines into
  152.     action
  155. -militarized communist party of highest organizational manifestation of MLM ideology
  156. - lenin says the proletariat’s revolutionary strength is the awakening of the masses, and its weakness is the lack of consciousness and initiative among these dumbass revolutionary leaders
  157. - second congress of comintern argued that bolshevik party form has replaced old legalistic one. And just as struggle for bolshevization was key then, maoists must take up that struggle now
  158. - need for a militarized communist party is fundamental and inseparable part of Maoism
  159.     - bars
