  1. >it was one sided
  2. >everything started so fast, it ended even faster
  3. >the soldier fought as hard as he could, and his steel broke before he did
  4. >the ax's blade shattered during an encounter, leaving him with a useless pole to defend himself
  5. >then the flash came
  6. >it was brilliant, blue, and it vibrated in the air gently as it flew overhead
  7. >the fighting stopped, just for a moment
  8. >he used this to his advantage, grabbing a crossbow that had either been discarded when a brawl had happened, or had been dropped when its user had been slain, and aiming towards the nearest distracted swede he saw
  9. >then it took him
  10. >the knight was sucked into the vortex, flailing wildly in confusion and panic
  11. >he stopped after a moment, and starred outside the portal
  12. >a black void, dark as the night sky and deep as the vastest ocean, surrounded him
  13. >there was nothing
  14. >he screamed
  15. >then there was a crash, the void was gone, and he was on his ass
  16. >the knight took a moment, pausing to take in what he saw, the void, the blackness, all of it
  17. >he looked up, his eyes readjusting to the daylight
  18. "Not again!"
  19. >he looked up at the figure the voice came from
  20. >she...he...it?
  21. >it stood several feet taller than him, on stilt-like legs ending in what he recognized as hooves
  22. >he looked up at its face
  23. >he screamed again
  24.
  25.
  26. "Gah, stop yelling!"
  27. >it demanded
  28. >he recognized what it said
  29. >no, he understood it perfectly
  30. >he shut his mouth, glaring daggers at the creature
  31. >lying to himself that his anger overwhelmed his fear
  32. >"You speak German?" he asked, standing up
  33. "What?"
  34. >"German. You speak it." he insisted, pointing at its nonexistent mouth.
  35. "What? No, I don't. I don't even know what German is."
  36. >it butchered the pronunciation
  37. >he scratched the top of helmet out of habit
  38. >"Then how are you speaking it?"
  39. "Oh-I"
  40. >it slapped its hand against her forehead
  41. >its two fingered hand
  42. >he shuttered involuntarily
  43. "It an effect of coming here. It just seems like I speak it."
  44. >it explained, making gestures with its grotesque hands for emphasis
  45. >he wasn't following
  46. >the thing began to dig through a nearby chest
  47. >"What are you?" he asked, not caring how rude it sounded
  48. >it chortled, the disgusting sound only furthering his fear
  49. "A woman, obviously."
  50. >this was not entertaining
  51. >"Are you keeping me here?"
  52. "No, you can leave, but I would-"
  53. >The soldier made a break for the door immediately
  54. "Wait, wait!"
  55. >the creature ran to the door frame after him, trying to stop him
  56. >the man has already left the building, and is in awe staring at the surroundings while still walking away at a steady pace
  57. "Wait! There's a town on the other side of the island! They can help!"
  58. >he heard, but didn't take it to heart, his brisk walk turning into a sprint away from the creature, eager to find someone less monstrous to explain where he was
  59.
  60. >it had been days
  61. >no food, unsure if the water was safe to drink, and minimal sleep in order to keep any other monsters away
  62. >it was driving him wild, stir crazy
  63. >he was leaned against a tree, his crossbow and useless pole resting against his knee and shoulder respectively
  64. >flies swarmed around him
  65. >had they already deemed him dead?
  66. >maybe, he didn't pretend to know
  67. >he closed his eyes, taking a rest
  68. >chirkp.
  69. >chirkp.
  70. >chirkp.
  71. >he opened his eyes again, looking for the source of the noise
  72. >it walked on two legs, like a chicken, but it looked like a worm for any other direction
  73. >but more important than its appearance was the fact that it hadn't noticed him
  74. >it didn't know he was there
  75. >he had the element of surprise
  76. >he had one shot at this
  77. >shakily and raggedly he stood up, careful to not make any noise
  78. >he grabbed his pole, turning it upside down and snapping the bottom of the hard wooden stick, making it into a very poor spear from the wooden splinters
  79. >carefully, he snuck behind the beast and reared his homemade weapon back
  80. >the creature turned to look at him, but all too late
  81. >he slammed the pole's splintered end into the monster's back, causing its legs to buckle and it to collapse onto the ground
  82. >dead in one blow
  83. >this single blow had taken everything out of him, leaving him panting
  84. >food
  85. >he tucked his pole and crossbow under his shoulder, and grabbed the beasts's body, dragging it along with him
  86. >he dragged it to a lake he had seen while wandering, dropping both its body and his weapons before shambling over to the body of water, raising his helmet, and dropping to his knees to gorge himself on the water, which had never tasted so sweet to him
  87. >his thirst was quenched, next was his hunger
  88. >he grabbed two branches and some leaves and put them into a neat pile
  89. >he grabbed the beast and tugged it over to the wood pile
  90. >the knight sat down, his armor clacking loudly as he adjusted himself
  91. >the knight looked at the beast
  92. >he had food
  93.
  94. >the beast's meat tasted familiar, reminding him of a salmon he had tasted as a child
  95. >but for now, he had been sated, at least momentarily
  96. >now he slept
  97. >he closed his eyes, relaxing in his armor
  98.
  99. >the fghting
  100. >the war
  101. >a red sky and a ground of flesh
  102. >corpses, bodies, all mutilated and torn
  103. >cries and shouts, the stench of rust and metal flooded his senses
  104. >pleas for help, grabbing hands tugging at his legs, dragging him further and further in the dirt
  105. >his face is grabbed, a hand covering his eyes and blocking his vision
  106. >the smell stops
  107. >the cries stop
  108. >there is nothing
  109.
  110. >he jumps awake, panting from fright and lifting his helmet to take in the sight of the rising sun and the dying fire at his feet
  111. >a dream, nothing more
  112. >he covered his sallet with his hands and shook his head from left to right for a moment before dragging his hands down to his bevor
  113. >he paused for a moment before grabbing his pole and crossbow, tucking them under his arm again
  114. >the town seemed like a sound idea
  115. >company, maybe something not bone chillingly horrifying, good food and water
  116. >he rubbed his chin, smirking under his helmet
  117. >women, too
  118. >the knight set off for the other side of the island, a great level of confidence in his step as he made his way around the lake
  119.
  120. >he stopped at the sight before him and sighed
  121. "You! Stop!"
  122. >there went his hopes for women
  123. >and for something that wasn't terrible
  124. >the knight did as he was told
  125. >"Do you know what German is?" he asked, folding his arms, careful to not let his weapons fall
  126. "What?"
  127. >the monster asks, cocking its head
  128. >he notices its missing an arm, noting how odd it is to have a cripple as a guard
  129. >"Nevermind." he shakes his head
  130. "You, er, you need to come with me!"
  131. >the monster orders
  132. >the knight shrugs
  133. >"Fine, then." he agrees
  134. >the creature looks surprised
  135. "You're not going to resist?"
  136. >"Why would I? You're armed, and I have a stick. I have a feeling you know your way around a fight, what with that arm and all." he pointed at the creature's nub.
  137. >the creature shrugs and turns to walk into the village
  138. >the knight follows
  139.
  140. >the town disturbs him, not in the fact this it is inhabited by monsters, but by what they have with them
  141. >in olden terms, they would call this 'magic,' or atleast it seemed like that to him
  142. >machines that moved on their own, made sound on their own, and made light, even, on their own
  143. >he kept a close eye on these
  144. "Tornoth will need to talk to you in the morning. But for now, you get to stay here."
  145. >the knight sighed
  146. >"Fine." the knight shook his head slightly
  147. >the creature left, the knight took off the top section of his armor, and laid down on the primitive straw bedding on the ground, closing his eyes and drifting off to sleep
  148.
  149. >the screams, once again
  150. >the smell, god, the smells
  151. >rust, metal, blood, and the impossibly thick stench of sweetrot
  152. >the screaming is louder, making his eardrums vibrate constantly
  153. >the tugging begins once again
  154. >the knight realizes he can move, beginning to kick at the hands and arms with all his might, breaking their bones under the force of his kicks, each thick crack causing the screams to grow louder
  155. >he knocks them all away, shambles away from them quickly
  156. >walking is neigh-impossible, not due to the weight of his armor but an unseen force pressing against him
  157. >he covers his face with his arms, keeping any debris away from his eyes
  158. >then he hears the beating of drums
  159. >no thoughts escape his mind
  160. >all he can think of is moving forward
  161. >and he does
  162. "WHY DO YOU RESIST?!"
  163. >the voice is incorporeal, each word sending him flying back several feet
  164. >the knight roars in defiance
  165. >he cannot think, but refuses to stop moving towards the core of the voice
  166. >the knight's knee bucks, then his leg straightens, and his knee inverts, causing him to collapse
  167. >his vision blackens
  168. >everything is quiet
  169. >there is nothing
  170.
  171. >the knight opens his eyes, quickly looking around the room and frantically observes his surroundings
  172. >it's the room he went to sleep in
  173. >he covers his face in his hands, shaking his head and quivering
  174.
  175. >the knight gives himself a moment to recover
  176. >he sighs and stands up, bending over to pick up his armor
  177. >he takes a minute to don the plates, finally placing the helmet over his head before walking out of the bedroom
  178. >he is surprised by the sight outside of it
  179. >a bustling market, with monsters and creatures all lined up to purchase things from the vendors at the counters and tables
  180. >he pushes his way through them, shoulder checking most of them in frustration, even knocking down a few on accident
  181. >he escapes from the crowd after a few minutes of struggle, taking a breath of the fresh air and lifting his visor to improve his line of sight
  182. >the town is on an absolutely stunning coastline, the water is clear, and the sound of the waves are the most familiar thing he has seen in days
  183. >it was relieving, truth be told
  184. >he paused for a minute, taking the sights in before scanning the buildings of the village
  185. >generally, the most ornate building belonged to the chieftain of any tribe
  186. >after about an hour of scrounging around the town, he finally found it
  187. >the leader appeared to be a smith to him, with tools dangling from his waist.
  188. >he looks at the knight, who stands only a foot or so shorter than him
  189. >"You are?" he asks
  190. "I'm Tornoth. I'm a smith."
  191.
  192. >the knights eyes light up a bit
  193. >"A smith?" he asks without hesitation
  194. >"Can you-"
  195. "I'm the one asking questions."
  196. >the knight steps back a bit, nervously
  197. >this thing is WELL over seven feet, and looks strong enough to punch a hole in his chest with little to no effort
  198. >upon realizing this, the knight gulps
  199. >"So, why did I need to see you?" the knight asks
  200. "Nobody comes to this village by foot. How'd you end up on the peninsula?"
  201. >he hadn't thought this far ahead
  202. >the knight paused, thinking how weird it would sound if he told the hulk of a beast the truth
  203. >eh, he had nothing to lose
  204. >"Vortex." he admitted
  205. "Excuse me?"
  206. >"Blue vortex-cyclone thing. Met a rather...atrocious looking woman when I came out of it."
  207. >Tornoth groaned
  208. "This is becoming a habit of hers. A bad habit."
  209. >the knight blinked in confusion for a moment
  210. >"This has happened before?" he asked, leaning in slightly
  211. "Sadly."
  212. >Tornoth sighed
  213. >"Well, do you know any way back where I came? It's important, I need to get back there as soon as possible." he insisted
  214. >Tornoth shrugged
  215. "So far, no."
  216. >the words repeated in the knight's head.
  217. >he was stuck here
  218. >for god knows how long, he was stuck here
  219. >alone
  220. >the only human
  221. >the last german
  222. >alone
  223. >Tornoth cleared his throat
  224. "Alright, what is you name?"
  225. >Tornoth asked, clearing his throat
  226. >the knight looked up at him, his depressed and broken face hidden behind his visor
  227. >he opens his mouth to speak
  228.
  229. "That's a rather odd name."
  230. >the knight snorted, being genuinely amused
  231. >"Tornoth's an odd name." he joked, to which Tornoth replied with a deep chcukle
  232. "I suppose so."
  233. >the knight smiled under his helmet at the monster
  234. >something about this one seemed a bit more human than the other ones, maybe it was his stature, how he was furred, or possibly the eyes
  235. "Now, what do you plan on doing in the village?"
  236. >now this caught him off guard
  237. >"I'm...not exactly sure, to be honest." he gave an awkward laugh
  238. "What do you mean?"
  239. >"I mean that I just came here by that woman's recommendation, I never expected to be asked what my plans were."
  240. >Tornoth looked at him then shrugged
  241. "Bah, fine."
  242. >"So, am I free to go?" he asked, folding his arms behind his back
  243. "I suppose so."
  244. >the knight nodded and turned to walk away, before remembering something
  245. >"Actually, I need to ask you something." he cleared his throat
  246. "Yes, what is it?"
  247. >"Can you repair my ax?"
  248. >Tornoth paused
  249. "How did you break it?"
  250. >"Before I came here, it's blade busted during the battle-"
  251. "I don't make weapons."
  252. >the knight was a bit taken aback
  253. >"W-what? I just need you to repair it-"
  254. "I said no."
  255. >the knight took the hint
  256. >"Well, then, I should get going." he insisted, walking towards the smithy door.
  257. "Be seeing you."
  258. >he nodded at Tornoth as he exited the building
  259. >with the odd introduction out of the way, the knight found himself wandering around the town
  260. >it was simple, but admirable
  261. >the buildings looked primitive, even compared to what he remembered, but it's self-sufficient machines still disturbed him on an almost primal level
  262. >the town's inhabitants looked to all be of a similar monstrous appearance, but none of them ever had the same appearance
  263. >well, bar one
  264. >this one looked similar to Tornoth, but was much, much smaller, had an overall feminine touch to her, and had a thick layer of sheep-like wool covering her
  265. >she was staring at the knight, her eyes full of curiousity
  266. >"Am I that interesting of a sight?" the knight chuckled
  267. "No! I-I mean yes! I mean..."
  268. >She paused to collect her thoughts
  269. "Are you the one that came from the peninsula?"
  270. >she asked, looking back up at him after fumbling with her hands
  271. >"That is correct." he nodded
  272. >her eyes lit up
  273. "Witch pulled you out of the ether! Gods You look odd! I can't imagine how disorienting this must be to you!"
  274. >well at least she was blunt about it
  275. >"It is rather odd, to say the least." he laughs
  276. "So, is your skin made of some sort of metal?"
  277. >what?
  278. >the knight paused, then realized she was referring to his armor which he hadn't taken off in front of anyone since he got here
  279. >"No, no, it's my armor." he corrected lifting up his visor to show the girl his face
  280. >somehow her curiosity was stoked even further
  281. "And you have five digits, too! It looks so odd!"
  282. >he lowered his hand from his helmet and wiggled his fingers
  283. >in hindsight, it would be a bit odd if you had never seen this before
  284. >"I suppose it is..." he shrugged
  285. "We just have to talk sometime! My name's Shyni, what's yours?"
  286. >The knight chuckled, then opened his mouth to speak
  287.
  288. >Shyni carefully looked over his armor, taking a great interest in it
  289. "So, where are you from? I mean, what was it like?"
  290. >the knight paused for a minute, looking for the right words
  291. >"Germani, at least that's what some people called it." he explained
  292. >"Great mountains, warm summers and chilling winters, rolling hills, green, beautiful grasses for miles." the knight reminisced
  293. >"Some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen..."
  294. >he smiles
  295. >then frowns
  296. >then sighs
  297. "Oh, I...I didn't upset you, did I?"
  298. >she sounds genuinely concerned
  299. >"No, no. I'm just thinking. Remembering home, and all."
  300. >she looks a bit anxious, worried that she made him uncomfortable
  301. >he cleared his throat
  302. >"The starkest difference is how you cannont find Sol, here."
  303. "Sol?"
  304. >"The ball in the sky. It's the thing that warms us all."
  305. "That...sounds weird."
  306. >she chuckles
  307. >"It is, people have been studying it recently, though. Granted, we can't do much if it burns our eyes everytime we see it." he jokes
  308. "Is it bright?"
  309. >"Very. It hurts to even look at it. Bright as the night is dark."
  310. "Hmm..."
  311. >she appears to mentally take notes over what he is saying
  312. >"Now, might I ask you a few questions?"
  313. >she looks a bit unprepared for this
  314. "I-I mean you can, but there's not much interesting that goes on in here."
  315. >"Nonsense, this place is unlike anything I've ever seen!"
  316. >she looks surprised
  317. "Really? It's all pretty boring to me."
  318. >"Not to me." the knight laughs.
  319. >"Where I'm from, there's only my kind of people. Here? Here, there's a new type of person every single day." he shrugged
  320. >she furrows her brows
  321. "Are you joking?"
  322. >"Not at all!"
  323. >"But really, I have to ask you. What are those...machines?" he asks, making a 'box' gesture in the air with his fingers
  324. "Oh, the computers?"
  325. >the knight blinks a few times blankly
  326. >"The what?"
  327. >after partially explaining computers and 'processors,' the knight was left just as, if not more, confused
  328. >the two had a round of back-and-forth questions, then the knight bid farewell
  329. >despite the lack of a sun, he could tell it was around midday, from the heat and the position of the shadows
  330. >he smacked his lips
  331. >he was awfully thirsty
  332. >he looked at the building made of a massive shell, and then at the monsters shambling out of it with a gait in its step
  333. >the knight grinned
  334. >a bar
  335. >he strode towards the entrance of the building, opening the door and taking it all in
  336. >drunks, monsters that were passed out, a few in minor squabbles
  337. >the knight grinned as he looked around
  338. >maybe this place wasn't so different after all
  339. >he strode inside and moved towards, what he thought, was an empty seat
  340. >the creature sitting there looked like a worm, but had a singular eye in its 'forehead'
  341. >"Is this seat taken?" he asks, pointing to the seat
  342. "Nah, go ahead."
  343. >he sat down, folding his hands and looking around the bar once again
  344. "So, you new here?"
  345. >the creature asks, looking around as well
  346. >"Does everyone know?" the knight asks, adjusting himself
  347. >the clacking of his armor is rather awkward
  348. "I mean, it's a small town. Word travels pretty quickly. Especially of a visitor with metal skin."
  349. >"It's armor." he corrected, lifting up his visor
  350. >the creature looks surprised
  351. "So you do have eyes."
  352. >it chortled, a disgusting sound that made him shutter
  353. >"You're not the first to make that mistake." he laughed
  354. >"Probably won't be the last, either." he sighed
  355. "So, what are you?"
  356. >the knight turned to look at the creature, who had been observing him for a few minutes now, to his displeasure
  357. >"A man."
  358. "Well, obviously. What's you kind called, though?"
  359. >the knight blinked absently
  360. >"Man." he said again
  361. >the creature gave him a suspicious side glance before shrugging
  362. "Alright then, pal."
  363. >"So, this is a bar, correct?" he asks, leaning forward in his seat and then lifting himself up lightly to get more comfortable
  364. "Correct."
  365. >the creature nods
  366. >"And I assume that is the bartender?" he asks, pointing at the insect-like figure tending to the counter
  367. >another nod
  368. "Among other things, yeah."
  369. >the worm chortles
  370. >"What do you mean 'among other things?'" he asked, giving a side glance at the barkeep
  371. "Hmmm...I dunno, maybe you could jog my memory?"
  372. >he recognized this tactic
  373. >"I'm not paying you." he folds his arms
  374. "Alright, alright."
  375. >the creature puts its arms up defensively
  376. >"I'm going to ask it if they have anything to drink." he said, standing up from his seat
  377. "Alright, whatever man."
  378. >he goes over to the barkeep, sitting down on one of the bar stools
  379. >"How much for a drink?" he asks
  380. >the creature looked him over
  381. "Depends, but the cheapest is about 4 Krats."
  382. >the knight sighed
  383. >he had no money
  384. >not even from Germani
  385. >"Scheiße."
  386. "That's fine, I didn't expect you to have anything."
  387. >the creature giggles
  388. >god that just gets more and more disturbing
  389. >"Well, do you have any work for me to do for a drink?"
  390. "Eager, aren't we?"
  391. >"I just need a drink. It's been rough few days." he shrugged
  392. >the creature laughed
  393. "Well, no. Not yet, anyhow. Maybe you can ask around, see if anyone needs anything."
  394. >the creature suggests with a shrug
  395. >he sighs and stands up from the stool
  396. >"I appreciate it, anyway." he waves off the barkeep and makes his way towards the door
  397. >then stops in his tracks as what looks like a bread knife flies in front of him and sinks into the wood of the door
  398. >he gulps
  399. >the knight plucks the knife from the door and examines it
  400. >exactly what he thought it was, a simple bread knife
  401. >he turns to look at the crowd, his gaze locking onto a set of yellow, reptilian eyes staring at him
  402. >he grumbled
  403. >the knight marched to the figure's table and slammed the knife onto it
  404. >"I believe this belongs to you." he said, starring the figure in the eyes
  405. >the figure grins and winks at him
  406. >he grumbles again, then departs from the bar
  407. >now, to find some work, make some money, and get a damned drink
  408. >there were only two people he had really met here, and only one of them would seem like they needed help with anything
  409. >to Tornoth's smithy it was, then
  410. "Work?"
  411. >Tornoth scratches his chin
  412. "Why? To afford that armor you must be well off."
  413. >"Sir I'm going to b honest with you. I came here during a battle, do you really think I'm going to take money into war?" he asks bluntly
  414. >Tornoth looks a bit taken back
  415. "Well, you're blunt about it."
  416. >he chuckles
  417. >"I'm not going to lie to you. You're a big boy, you can take it."
  418. >he shakes his head for a moment
  419. "Alright, I do have some work, but its late. You go get some rest, and come back in the morning."
  420. >he orders, and the knight sighs
  421. >"Alright. I'll be here as soon as I can, and I trust you'll be up when I get here."
  422. >he snorts
  423. "I'm an old man. I rise before the sun does."
  424. >the knight departs from the smithy, returning to the community hut, taking off some layers of armor, and lying down once again in the straw bedding
  425. >he was stuck here
  426. >but he wasn't alone in being odd
  427. >he would find a way back
  428. >he would not die here
  429. >he would not die the last german
  430. >he sighed and relaxed, closing his eyes and drifting off
  431.
  432. >there was nothing
  433. >no noise, no smell, no tugging
  434. >the knight picked a direction and ran
  435. >his armor clanked and clacked as he ran, its noise the only sound he could hear
  436. >the knight stopped running to catch his breath, putting his hands on his knees and panting
  437. >there was no end to this
  438. >he straightened himself up and began to run once again
  439. >again the clacking
  440. >this would have been nothing new, but the second set behind him was
  441. >the knight turned mid-step to face his pursuer
  442. >the armor was all too familiar
  443. >it was his
  444. >the imitation tackled him to the ground, a massive crash as they slammed into the floor
  445. >it swung at him, the knight dodged and kicked it off
  446. >"Who are you?!" he screamed
  447. >the imitation charged and swung his fist into the knight's chest, denting the plate
  448. "You."
  449. >the imitation echoed, a sample of the knight's voice
  450. >it was distorted, like the sound of a rabid animal
  451. >the knight recovered, pushing the armor off
  452. >"This is a dream! I know it!" he insisted
  453. >"You're not real!" he roared at the beast
  454. >the imitation gave a metallic laugh, then charged again before attempting to strike the knight in the head
  455. >the knight staggered back, the blow denting his helmet and making his head throb
  456. >the imitation loomed over him, then leaned down unnaturally low, its spine bending into an insectoid mimicry of a human's
  457. >it lifted its visor
  458. >a monster
  459. >it was a monster, an imitation human that struck fear into his heart
  460. >it opened its stitched jaw
  461. >the imitation looked him in the eyes
  462. "I am you."
  463.
  464. >he jolted awake in a panic
  465. >he frantically observed the room he rested in
  466. >his armor was to his left, unclean but otherwise showing no damage
  467. >same with his helmet
  468. >he sighed, shaking his head and standing up
  469. >the knight donned his armor and stretched, heading out the market and making a line to Tornoth's smithy, eager to drink away the fear of his dream
  470. "You're up late. I expected you to be up earlier."
  471. >Tornoth snorted
  472. >"Long night. I'd rather not go into it." the knight insisted with a yawn
  473. "Alright, then I won't pester you. But we still have some work to do."
  474. >Tornoth adjusted his apron
  475. "Have you ever worked a smith?"
  476. >"Once, when I was a boy." he scratched his chin
  477. >"I made a knife if I remember right. It shattered in a hit."
  478. >Tornoth chuckled
  479. "Then it might be a good idea for us to do the sauna first. I can make the nails on my own."
  480. >the knight shrugged
  481. >"Fine by me."
  482. >the two took a moment to gather some rags, sponges, and enough water to guarantee the building would be clean
  483. >it took most the afternoon, but the two successfully managed to restore the sauna to a respectable condition
  484. >it looked fine, not perfect, but it was acceptable
  485. "Well, work requires pay."
  486. >Tornoth searched through one of his pockets and took out a few pearl-shaped lights
  487. >the knight cautiously eyed them
  488. >"That's...that's fine." he rejected the payment
  489. >"You've been as generous to give me shelter, I'm sure I can find money elsewhere." he felt bad to be offered it
  490. >Tornoth eyed him suspiciously
  491. "Alright, I'm going to back to the smithy."
  492. >Tornoth waved him off
  493. >the knight nodded
  494. >he looked at the sauna
  495. >it had been a rough few days, why not
  496. >he took off his armor, the chainmail, and his undergarments, then grabbed a nearby towel
  497.
  498. >the sauna was not as relaxing as a good drink, but it worked well enough
  499. >he sighed and grabbed the laddle, pouring water onto the hot stones
  500. >the knight rested his eyes a moment
  501. >he flinched as the door opened
  502. "Oh, you're here."
  503. >Tornoth sighed as he squeezed his way into the room
  504. >"Ah, sorry. I'll head out."
  505. "No, it's fine."
  506. >Tornoth insisted, sitting down across from the knight
  507. >Tornoth must have been much more comfortable with nudity than him, but it didn't bother the knight much
  508. >"So, you finish those nails?" he asked, adjusting himself
  509. >Tornoth replied with a nod
  510. "I appreciate your help with this."
  511. >the knight nods
  512. >then he notices what the monsterous man had in his hands
  513. >"Is that wine?"
  514. >Tornoth looked at the bottle in his hand
  515. "You had this where you were from?"
  516. >the knight nods
  517. >"Wine and lager." he explained
  518. >"Lager had a less...refined taste to it."
  519. "Ah, a common man's drink, then?"
  520. >"Aye." the knight nods
  521. "Didn't expect you to be well versed in drinks."
  522. >Tornoth chuckled
  523. >"Same here." the knight admitted
  524. >he glaced over the bottle again
  525. >"Mind if I see it?" he asked, extending his hand
  526. >Tornoth shrugged and tossed the bottle to him
  527. >"'Devil's spit?'" The knight asked, looking over the bottle's label
  528. "Pah, they always opt to give these strange names. I'd prefer they just say what it is."
  529. >"You and me both." he laughed before tossing the bottle back to Tornoth
  530. >Tornoth took the laddle and poured more water onto the stones
  531. >the two sat there for a moment
  532. "Do you mind if I...I don't know, get something off of my chest?"
  533. >the knight looked up at him
  534. >"Go ahead, I'm not going to stop you."
  535. >Tornoth nodded
  536. "I trust you've met my daughter?"
  537. >"Shyni?" he asked
  538. >"Mmhm, she's a good girl. What about her?"
  539. "Well she...she's malformed."
  540. >Tornoth explained, unscrewing the bottle and taking a swig from it
  541. >the knight looked a bit surprised
  542. >Tornoth cleared his throat as he lowered the bottle
  543. "I originally just thought she was a small child. She was a baby, babies are small."
  544. >Tornoth chuckled
  545. "Then I thought it was what I was feeding her, but that proved wrong as well."
  546. >Tornoth offered the bottle to the knight, who accepted it without hesitation
  547. >"Does she know?" he asked before taking a swig of the wine
  548. "No, I never had the heart to tell her. She's supposed to be bigger than me, but...well, you've seen her."
  549. >she did seem a bit odd, at least in regards to her proportions
  550. >"Well, she doesn't seem to mind it."
  551. "Yes, I've always tried to keep her happy."
  552. >Tornoth's tone changes to a more hopeful one
  553. "I would like to think I've done a good job."
  554. >"You have, at least from what I've seen." the knight reassures
  555. >Tornoth'a face softens
  556. >"But I have to ask, why trust me with this?" the knight asks, passing the bittle back to Tornoth who takes a swig
  557. "I would like to think you and I are friends."
  558. >Tornoth shrugs
  559. >the knight is surprised, truth be told
  560. >"I would say so as well." he chuckles, putting his fist forward
  561. >Tornoth looked at it for a moment, before leaning forward and bumping the knight's fist with his own
  562. >the two nod at eachother
  563. >Tornoth takes another swig
  564. "So, where you came from, what was it like?"
  565. >the knight smiled
  566. >"Would you rather I talk about the people, or the place?"
  567. "I doubt the place is as interesting as those within it."
  568. >Tornoth offered the bottle, and the knight took a swig
  569. >"We are very proud. People called us many things, but most common was 'German' or 'Germanic.'" the knight explained
  570. "You didn't have one name?"
  571. >"No, not really. We used to be around a dozen tribes, then we united under a common flag. A common hatred for an enemy brought us together, and once they were gone, we became various territories."
  572. >Tornoth looked genuinely interested
  573. "So you all drifted apart?"
  574. >"More or less." he shrugged
  575. >"I heard Shyni mention 'gods,' do you happen to be religious?" he asked
  576. >Tornoth nodded
  577. "You?"
  578. >the knight nodded
  579. >"One god, his son, and his son's disciples." the knight explained, pointing towards the roof
  580. "Interesting."
  581. >"You know, you're the first person to not be surprised by me having eyes."
  582. >Tornoth snorted
  583. "I'm a smith, I recognize armor when I see it."
  584. >the knight chuckled
  585. >"Fair enough, I suppose."
  586. >the knight bid farewell to Tornoth, his desire for drink sated along with memories of home strengthened
  587. >now he sat at the edge of the market, his armor doffed and lying beside him as he polished it with a rag and some water he had gathered
  588. >then it started to rain
  589. >the knight curiously stuck his hand out of the cover of the roof to make sure what he was seeing was rain
  590. >he was surprised to see that it was
  591. >maybe this place wasn't as different as he though
  592. >he continued to diligently polish his armor, making sure to get off all the grime and muck it had acquired in the past week or so
  593. >it looked awful
  594. >the battle had given it a few dings, along with thick layers of caked up mud and dirt in a few areas
  595. >the knight made a dissatisfied 'hmph' as he continued to clean the armor
  596. >as the time passed, he was caught off guard by the sound of approaching footsteps in the muddy ground
  597. >instinctively he went to reach for a weapon, but stopped upon seeing the familiar figure of Shyni in the rain
  598. "May I come in?"
  599. >she asks, still being poured on
  600. >the knight laughs
  601. >"Come on in! It's not like I own the place." he insisted, waving for her to come in
  602. >she did so without hesitation, and sat down a few feet away from the knight, starring at his armor intently
  603. "So..."
  604. >she paused to collect her thoughts
  605. "What're you doing?"
  606. >the knight lifted the chestplate of his armor towards her
  607. >"Can you see your reflection in it?" he asks
  608. "No, not really."
  609. >another 'hmph' from the knight
  610. >"Then it isn't clean enough." he said in jest
  611. "So, you're cleaning it? It looked fine to me when I saw it."
  612. >"A knight's armor is his face. If I were to let it get any dirtier, what do you think people would think when they saw me?"
  613. "Oooh, I get it."
  614. >she nods
  615. "So are you the only one with armor where you're from? That looks pretty fancy, probably expensive."
  616. >"Lord, no. Entire armies would have fighters in different armors, some like mine." he gestured to his helmet
  617. "That's so cool!"
  618. >"Do you really think so?" he asks, putting down the chestplate
  619. "Yeah! I'd love to see it, fighting must have been such a thrill!"
  620. >the knight chuckles awkwardly and nervously
  621. >"Thrill is one way to put it." he sighs
  622. >he puts the chestplate down and rubs his neck slowly
  623. "What, was it not exciting?"
  624. >"It was." he shrugged
  625. >"But somethings just stick with you. There are a few people always fighting in the same war, the same battle, and the same time, all their lives."
  626. "Oh..."
  627. >she looks a bit down now
  628. >the knight cleared his throat
  629. >"But yes. It was exciting." he smiled at her
  630. >she responded by giggling and rubbing the back of her neck
  631. "So, are you doing anything tomorrow? I mean if you're busy I don't want to bother you, but if you're not doing anything I'd like to talk with about something."
  632. >he paused
  633. >"Nothing, what do you have in mind?"
  634. "Well, you're a knight right? Don't you like adventures?"
  635. >the knight smirks at her
  636. >"Of course I do." the knight nods with a smile
  637. "Great!"
  638. >she beams
  639. "Meet me in my garden tomorrow, okay?"
  640. >"Of course!"
  641. >she nods and stands up
  642. "My garden, okay? I'll be waiting!"
  643. >she waves goodbye before jogging out of the tavern, a pep in her step as she runs towards her house
  644. >the knight chuckles, then goes back to cleaning his armor
