  3. Primary purpose : Single play
  4. ===========================================================================
  5. Title : Back to Saturn X E2: Tower in the Fountain of Sparks
  6. Version : Public Beta 3
  7. Filename : btsx_e2_b3.zip
  8. Release date : 02/07/2018
  9.
  10. Author : Esselfortium and the Back to Saturn X team

  13. Misc. Author Info : I Invented The Moonwalk (And The Pencil Sharpener)
  14.
  15. Description : Tower in the Fountain of Sparks is the second
  16. episode of Back to Saturn X, a three-episode
  17. partial conversion for Doom II.
  18.
  19. Back to Saturn X is fully compatible with
  20. Doom2.exe and Chocolate Doom. It has also been
  21. tested with Eternity Engine, PrBoom-Plus,
  22. ZDoom, GZDoom, and Risen3D.
  23.
  24. ===========================================================================
  25.
  26. IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT LOADING BTSX E2:
  27.
  28. BTSX has been split into two wad files which must
  29. be loaded together. This has been done in order
  30. to work around an obscure vanilla crash involving
  31. wads that exceed 4046 lumps.
  32.
  33. Included in this zip archive are three files:
  34.
  35. btsx_e2a.wad
  36. btsx_e2b.wad
  37. btsx_e2.deh
  38.
  39. Vanilla or Chocolate Doom users should load
  40. both wads alongside the btsx_e2.deh patch.
  41.
  42. Source port users should only need to load the
  43. two wad files together.
  44.
  45. ===========================================================================
  46.
  47. This is still a beta release, so there may be
  48. some minor issues encountered. Send in a report
  49. if you run into anything really weird.
  50. (Hopefully not.)

  185.
  186. 02, 06, 07, 08, 12, 15, 17, and 18 feature additional mapping by Esselfortium.
  187.
  188. 04 features additional mapping by Seele00TextOnly.
  189.
  190. 09 features additional mapping by TheGreenHerring.
  191.
  192. Thanks to Xaser for maintaining the compiled WAD, and providing the ZMAPINFO
  193. and DEHACKED lumps.
  194.
  195. Beyond the two levels he's directly credited for thing placements on,
  196. dew's contributions extend to virtually every map. His detailed gameplay
  197. recommendations are a big part of what's made BTSX what it is.
  198.
  199. Bonus superthanks to Marcaek and Alfonzo for eagerly hopping on board to
  200. bring fresh perspectives to the maps late in development, and for helping
  201. out with skill setting refinement and the mad rush to the public release.
  202.
  203. Similarly, thanks to j4rio and Ribbiks for playtesting MAP31!
  204.
  205. Automap cleanup has been done primarily by Seele00TextOnly and Tarnsman.
  206.
  207. Various OCD alignment fixes have been taken care of by Seele00TextOnly.
  208.
  209. Episode end-screen map is by Tarnsman.
  210.
  211. ===========================================================================
  212.
  213. * Difficulty Settings: Serving Suggestions *
  214.
  215. Back to Saturn X was designed primarily for the Ultra-Violence skill, but all
  216. skill settings have been fully implemented!
  217.
  218. We initially used the first episode of Alien Vendetta as our guideline for
  219. target difficulty, but as development continued, the mapset became harder and
  220. more unrelentingly paced. If you consider Alien Vendetta E2 or Plutonia too
  221. hard on UV, consider playing at a lower skill setting. Difficulty adjustments
  222. were aimed towards making the maps easier, not emptier, and the mapset has
  223. been tested thoroughly by team members who themselves prefer Hurt Me Plenty or
  224. Hey Not Too Rough.
  225.
  226. All maps were designed around pistol starts, but feel free to play
  227. continuously! Item balance has been tweaked in order to limit the
  228. trivializing nature of equipment carryovers. Maps will feel easier, as is
  229. generally inevitable with continuous play, but you shouldn't be completely
  230. swimming in ammo. (And yes, withholding the backpack is intentional!)
  231.
  232. Extra multiplayer-only monsters and resources have been added to provide
  233. extra challenge for cooperative play. Given the prevailing trends in modern
  234. PvE netplay and the widespread use of C/S ports that relax player limits,
  235. resource balance does not target any particular player count. It is assumed
  236. item respawn will be used in coop games, so play without it at your own risk!
  237.
  238. All maps have been tested to be completable with the coop extras, even with
  239. only one player. In fact, players who seek extra challenge can treat this
  240. "solo-net" mode as a hidden "Ultra-Violence+" skill!
  241.
  242. To start a netgame in single-player ("solo-net"):
  243.
  244. - In Prboom-Plus or Eternity Engine, run the game from the command line or a
  245. batch with added "-solo-net" parameter
  246.
  247. - In ZDoom (or derivatives), use "-host 1 +map map01" in the command line,
  248. or "map map01 coop" in the console. (The latter may not work in older ZDoom
  249. versions.)
  250.
  251. Although Back to Saturn X is otherwise vanilla-compatible, cooperative and
  252. solo-net are recommended for limit-removing source ports only. Due to the
  253. added multiplayer arch-viles, you're likely to crash out with a visplane
  254. overflow sooner or later if you try coop or solo-net in Chocolate Doom or
  255. Doom2.exe.
  256.
  257. Note that an alternative version of MAP16 (MAP16C) is included in the wad
  258. for co-op purposes (replacing the bridge raising/lowering effects with
  259. Boom silent teleports); this map will appear instead of regular MAP16 in
  260. Eternity and ZDoom, which should cover most of the co-op bases.
  261.
  262. ===========================================================================
  263.
  264. * Music Playback: Serving Suggestions *
  265.
  266. The easy recommended option is to use the Microsoft MIDI synth that comes
  267. with Windows.
  268.
  269. The soundtrack to Back to Saturn X was predominantly composed using the
  270. Roland SoundCanvas instrument set, which the Microsoft MIDI synth's
  271. instrument set was based on. That means you'll hear Back to Saturn X's
  272. music just as intended without having to set up anything special at all!
  273.
  274. Alternately, using a Roland SoundCanvas soundfont can provide great
  275. results, with similar but slightly higher quality instruments than the
  276. default Microsoft ones.
  277.
  278. Your mileage may vary when using OPL emulation or using other soundfonts.
  279. In particular, custom soundfonts usually give instruments wildly different
  280. timbres and volumes than what we intended when we composed and mixed these
  281. songs, so in many cases they leave BTSX's music sounding a bit muffled,
  282. reverby, and badly-mixed, rather than enhancing the sound quality like
  283. they're intended to. For that and other reasons, we recommend the default
  284. Microsoft Windows MIDI playback for most users.
  285.

  322.
  323. May Not Run With... : Back to Saturn X has not been tested with gameplay
  324. mods, and we make no guarantees that it will work
  325. as intended with one. The maps have been carefully
  326. balanced for exciting gameplay with Doom's standard
  327. monster and weapon behavior: if you're playing with
  328. mods and run into issues, well... stop doing that.
