  1. Good afternoon! It is MINUS THREE degrees and snowy at the Loyola Campus of Concordia University. I’m Jessica Barile! And here today’s headlines! Bill 21 continues to divide the province. Citizens in Pointe-Saint-Charles express their outrage over the lack of affordable housing, despite vacant units. And this year’s edition of the Words and Music Show tackles pressing health issues.
  2. 01 / BILL 21 / PAYETTE / STORY
  3. Since adoption, Bill 21 has split the province on whether it goes too far or not far enough. In September, a group of teachers met at Parc Metro Station voice their objections. Our reporter Martin Payette looks back on that story.
  4.
  5. TAG: The controversy shows no signs of dying. Two different court challenges are already making their way through the Quebec court system.
  6.
  7. 02 / NDP PAPINEAU / KONÉ / STORY
  8. The Papineau riding has been a Liberal stronghold for most of its history but an NDP candidate took on the challenge of campaigning against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in one of the most diverse ridings in Canada during the last month’s federal election. Our reporter, Ismaël Koné, has more.
  9.
  10. TAG: Christine Paré ultimately had to settle for second place, with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau winning the riding with over FIFTY PER CENT OF THE VOTES. The NDP candidate only received less than TWENTY.
  11. 03 / ENVIRONMENT / MANOVA / FEATURE
  12. Last month, the Saint-Laurent borough hosted the first ever Ecocitizens’ Rendez-Vous. Featuring over twenty exhibitors, specialists conducted workshops, manned kiosks and held conferences throughout the day. The focus was on climate change preparedness and fostering zero-waste lifestyle. Our reporter Siya Manova has that the story.
  13. 04 / ENVIRONMENT / MANOVA / DEBRIEF
  14. One of the producers of that story, Siya Manova, now joins us with more. Q1: Siya, can events like the Ecocitizens’ Rendez-Vous raise awareness about sustainability?
  15. Q2: What are the current issues that we, as citizens, are creating that have a direct impact on the environment?
  16. Q3: What other measures do we have to take in order to move towards eco-conscious mindsets?
  17. 05 / HOUSING PROTEST / CHIADMI / VOSOT
  18. Thank you Siya. The fight for affordable housing continues across the city, with one district voicing some of the loudest criticisms. Pointe-Saint-Charles residents and housing activists have been vocally against the area’s gentrification, which prices out locals in favour of new high-rise developments. Meriem Chiadmi has more on that story.
  19.
  20. TAG: Montreal’s housing prices continue to trend upwards, with no signs of stalling. The latest prediction from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation is that home prices in Greater Montreal will continue to go up by an average of five to six per cent per year for the next two years.
  21. 06 / COLLECTIVE GARDENING / GOLDBERG / FEATURE
  22. Moving now from Pointe-Saint-Charles to Ville Émard and Côte-Saint-Paul, where this summer, citizens gathered around a collective garden. Pro-Vert Sud-Ouest is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating citizens on food security. Our reporter, Naomi Goldberg has that story.
  23.
  24. TAG: With snow on the ground, the outdoor gardening season is over. But members of Pro-Vert Sud-Ouest will continue spreading the green gospel, hosting winter workshops on composting and recycling.
  25. 07 / MENTAL HEALTH / MANOVA / FEATURE
  26. For twenty years, the Words and Music Show, hosted by Concordia University, has been a cultural haven for a wide variety of performers living in and visiting Montreal. It is the city’s longest running spoken word poetry, literature, performance and music show, featuring both seasoned and upcoming artists. This year’s was part of a series of interdisciplinary dialogues related to innovation in health matters. Our C-J-C-N reporters asked two participants at the show about the different ways that we can improve our mental health.
  27. 08 / MENTAL HEALTH / CHIADMI / DEBRIEF
  28. Joining us in the studio is our reporter, Meriem Chiadmi. Q1: Meriem, how many people are affected by mental health issues in Quebec?
  29. Q2: How helpful are music and words when dealing with mental health issues?
  30. Q3: What can students do if they are struggling with their mental wellbeing?
  31. 09 / PLANE BIRDS / PAYETTE / FEATURE
  32. Thank you Meriem. When you think airport security, you might think about gates, fences, security cameras, and metal detectors. But Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport also has another set of eyes, and feathers, in the sky to help mitigate the risk of BIRD STRIKES. Our reporter, Martin Payette, has more on the story.
  33. 10 / PLANE BIRDS / PAYETTE / DEBRIEF
  34. Our reporter, Martin Payette, now joins us in studio with more. Q1: Martin, you were not just assigned this story. This is something you actually used to do.
  35. Q2: I bet. Now, we’ve just seen our first snow in the last couple weeks. How will this affect the job?
  36. Q3: Why would snowy owls come to the airport?
  37. Q4: What’s different about wildlife control with snowy owls?
  38. Q5: What about the hawks and falcons? What do they do throughout the winter?
  39. 11 / EXTRO / BARILE / EXTRO
  40. Thank you Martin. And that’s your news for this afternoon. Thanks for watching. For C-J-C-N, I’m Jessica Barile.
