- i am going to get help painting the grass from my daughter.
- just trying to figure out the process
- i tried to use a flat 2d grass image before. and it stretched it all kinds of funny. and the larger blocks wouldnt load the image or whatever.
- I replaced the 3D grass textures with a solid color texture and manually made color/bump/paint maps with paint.(edited)
- now with the new unity the 3d grass is all out of focus.
- so I am asking. how do you make the maps? do you load the object in gimp/photoshop? do you load a .jpg or .png of the object in gimp/photoshop?(edited)
- Anonomoosle - Today at 5:43 PM
- @Rhea Sorry for pinging, but you might be able to help
- Rhea does a lot of texturing, modding, and modelling so she might be able to help
- Roy - Today at 5:44 PM
- lol that was to Rhea
- Rhea went offline
- Anonomoosle - Today at 5:45 PM
- Ah
- Roy - Today at 5:47 PM
- been trying to figure this out since i started making the grass
- no one knows? lol.
- Roy - Today at 6:12 PM
- guess its a trade secret.
- Anonomoosle - Today at 6:13 PM
- People might not have seen it?
- Roy - Today at 6:14 PM
- i wish there was a program i could use to load the object and hit a button to create the maps automaticly.
- 3d builder kinda does that but its not a texture map i guess that it creates alongside the .obj file. 3D Builder is what i used to make the mesh for the blocks in the first place.(edited)
- blender tutorial is all sorts of complicated with setting up the scene and crap. which i did. but got overwhelmed by the sheer volume of painting I would have to do.(edited)
- which is why it has a base solid texture that is out of focus now.
- thats question 1 of 2 about texturing blocks in this game.
- question 2 might be resolved by solving question 1.
- but question 2 is: how do I get the texture to span all the blocks in one unbroken seemless pattern? sorry if i dont express myself so clearly.
- my textures do this: https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/852720084076052700/5CA9AE1B065F25C33562CE7FD5574676A83C428D/
- another trade secret it would seem.(edited)
- Rhea - Today at 6:42 PM
- You do that by making the block map take up a very small part of the image
- then in FtD, there's a material setting you choose
- Roy - Today at 6:46 PM
- lol ty ill try to decipher that
- Rhea - Today at 6:48 PM
- it's a lot easier to show you
- Roy - Today at 6:48 PM
- I wish I had gone to schoole for this
- Rhea - Today at 6:48 PM
- but harder since we're using different programs
- Roy - Today at 6:48 PM
- ya i dont want to use blender
- to hard
- i will install gimp
- Rhea - Today at 6:49 PM
- I never went to school for it either. I just teach myself bits from onine tutorials and websites
- Roy - Today at 6:49 PM
- same here
- Rhea - Today at 6:49 PM
- gimp and blender do different things
- they can be used together
- Roy - Today at 6:49 PM
- oh duh brain fart
- Rhea - Today at 6:49 PM
- but they don't replace each other
- I prefer Maya
- which you can download a student version for free
- Roy - Today at 6:49 PM
- ok i use 3D builder for the .obj's
- works well free with win 10
- already installed
- i dont have photoshop. so ill get gimp now
- so in maya
- you make the .obj. and then export what to gimp?
- you have to do something to go from maya to gimp right?
- Rhea - Today at 6:52 PM
- you export as an obj
- that obj is then its own thing
- which FtD can load
- gimp is for making textures for it
- Roy - Today at 6:52 PM
- k im that far... not gimp far
- Rhea - Today at 6:52 PM
- Do you have maya downloaded?
- Roy - Today at 6:53 PM
- no do i need it?
- ok got gimp installed
- i have the obj files. i need to load in maya?
- which version of maya?
- Maya
- Maya Extension
- Maya LT
- Maya LT Extension?
- Roy - Today at 7:07 PM
- still working on getting maya. you sure i need this? what do you do in maya?
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:08 PM
- mad hax!
- Roy - Today at 7:08 PM
- wont let me get it
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:09 PM
- u need to use a student account
- u can also use blender
- Roy - Today at 7:09 PM
- im not a student. it doesnt acccept edx.org as an institute
- i use 3d builder.
- its another program like them
- the same process should work in theory with it as with maya or blender? its just no one will tell me what they do in maya
- ive looked up tutorials on blender. and its complicated scene setting up.
- i need to use 3d builder
- its already installed on every pc in this house
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:11 PM
- 3d builder?
- Roy - Today at 7:12 PM
- except mine now that i reverted to win 7
- preinstalled application in win 10
- so ya 6 pc's 5 of which have 3D Builder preinstalled.
- so anyone with win 10 can make 3d blocks for this game
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:16 PM
- oh that thing...
- Roy - Today at 7:17 PM
- yup. works just fine. wish i still had it on my pc. for now i have to switch back and forth between my laptop and pc to edit my .obj files(edited)
- I started with a 1x1x1 test block. imported it. then saved and resized it untill it came out the same size(edited)
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:18 PM
- blender, is free!
- Roy - Today at 7:18 PM
- blender is a pain to use(edited)
- 3d builder was simple and easy to use
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:19 PM
- its great when u get used to it
- Roy - Today at 7:19 PM
- haha ya i used it way back when i was messing with mesh for sl.
- DJFlaisch - Today at 7:19 PM
- sketchup is probally the worst
- Roy - Today at 7:20 PM
- thats the google one?
- think i might have tried to use it... but blender was better to me at that time
- though always a pain in the arse to get working with SL till some version of blender made it easier.
- hmmm ok i have gimp open...
- what do i import to gimp?
- keep in mind i have to explain to a 10 year old girl how to do this.(edited)
- standard size for 1x1x1 in 3DBuilder is 25.4³. size in FTD itself when imported was 0.0395.
- for anyone interested in making blocks
- is setting up the scene a standard across the board with blender and maya?
- Rhea - Today at 8:14 PM
- Back
- sorry
- You can use blender if you want
- Maya or Blender
- Roy - Today at 8:27 PM
- np. im here and there trying to get stuff sorted in real life. Three kids can be hard to direct sometimes.(edited)
- I need the explanaition for maya so i can try to adapt it for 3DBuilder, or if i can not, keep pursuing maya and use the free trial instead.(edited)
- ^.^(edited)
- once you have the model/mesh textured/painted in maya/blender you do what?(edited)
- Roy - Today at 9:01 PM
- what's the next step?
- trade secret lol
- no matter what game or what program im using no one will explain this step. or lead me to such a confusing guide that i just give up in frustration.
- instead of just saying... i export it via this button or i take a screenshot and edit that. or whatever it is they do. like setting up a scene in blender using lighting and blah blah blah. but no one says how they get the whatever it is they get to import into photoshop or gimp.
- so again i ask what are you importing into gimp or photoshop?
- the *.obj file or a *.jpg or a *.png file?
- Rhea - Today at 9:24 PM
- Nothing. You make your material in gimp or photoshop
- then you open it in maya or blender
- this will be in something like assign new material, then by file, then select the file
- then you need to map it, by opening the UV editor in blender or maya
- Roy - Today at 9:25 PM
- then how do i get the mat?
- Rhea - Today at 9:25 PM
- Make it
- Roy - Today at 9:25 PM
- for ftd?
- Rhea - Today at 9:25 PM
- Draw circles or paint lines
- w/e
- For FtD, find the textures in the game files
- Roy - Today at 9:25 PM
- im trying to create the textures myself
- Rhea - Today at 9:26 PM
- Then I don't know what you're asking
- Roy - Today at 9:26 PM
- there is no default texture for 3d grass
- ok you dont know i see
- ty
- Rhea - Today at 9:26 PM
- Is English your native language?
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:26 PM
- @Roy
- Roy - Today at 9:26 PM
- yes.
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:27 PM
- i dont think you understand what a texture is
- it is an image that is mapped to the model
- you have to make this image
- Roy - Today at 9:27 PM
- yes
- how?
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:27 PM
- and the mapping coordinates of the model
- you have to do that yourself
- Roy - Today at 9:27 PM
- how?
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:27 PM
- it is an image
- how do people greate images?
- Roy - Today at 9:27 PM
- how do i get the image?
- Rhea - Today at 9:27 PM
- DRAW IT
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:28 PM
- painting, drawing, photoshop, gimp, paint.net
- Roy - Today at 9:28 PM
- ok ty thats what i wanted
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:28 PM
- you dont just get ome magical end all be all
- you have to actually make it
- Roy - Today at 9:28 PM
- you say make it
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:28 PM
- ...
- what
- Roy - Today at 9:28 PM
- not how to make it
- Rhea - Today at 9:28 PM
- How do you not know what making an image is?
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:28 PM
- ^
- Rhea - Today at 9:28 PM
- wait
- Roy - Today at 9:28 PM
- because obviously the way im doing it is wrong
- Rhea - Today at 9:28 PM
- how old are you?
- Roy - Today at 9:28 PM
- 37
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:29 PM
- wait
- you have UV mapped your object, right?(edited)
- Rhea - Today at 9:29 PM
- No.
- Roy - Today at 9:29 PM
- i dont know what that is
- Rhea - Today at 9:29 PM
- This is what I explained earlier.
- Roy - Today at 9:30 PM
- you explained that i should texture the stuff in blender
- Rhea - Today at 9:30 PM
- "then you need to map it, by opening the UV editor in blender or maya"(edited)
- Roy - Today at 9:30 PM
- or maya
- but you didnt say what to do with it from there
- k fuck
- Rhea - Today at 9:30 PM
- Because as I said
- Roy - Today at 9:31 PM
- ty
- Rhea - Today at 9:31 PM
- I don't have Blender
- And you don't have Maya
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:31 PM
- its been too long ince ive worked with blender
- im no help with it
- but you know what is
- Youtube
- Google
- etc etc
- Roy - Today at 9:32 PM
- i can get maya if i need it. but i have to get a 10 year old to do this too. so if i can avoid using maya and stick to 3dbuilder id rather do it that way. uv mapping i dnk if 3dbuilder has that. i do know that it creates an additional file that suposedly is not what i need.
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:32 PM
- they are your best friends
- Rhea - Today at 9:32 PM
- You need to get a 10 year old to do this
- xD
- I love how insulting you're being without intending that
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:32 PM
- you can get maya for free lol
- Roy - Today at 9:32 PM
- well i need to get a 10 year old to help paint the grass ya
- Rhea - Today at 9:32 PM
- If this was easy enough that 10 year olds could do it
- Everyone would make a mod
- Roy - Today at 9:32 PM
- thers 100s of blades of grass
- Rhea - Today at 9:33 PM
- ...
- Do you
- think we mean paint
- as in
- physically paint
- Roy - Today at 9:33 PM
- uh ya?
- Rhea - Today at 9:33 PM
- I didn't realise you where trolling
- My bad
- Roy - Today at 9:33 PM
- im sitting here with gimp open and im trolling? no im tring to figure out what to do
- Rhea - Today at 9:34 PM
- How are you planning on getting your physical painting onto the computer, can I ask?
- Roy - Today at 9:34 PM
- to complicated.
- omg
- nvm
- is english your first language?
- Wogsethan - Today at 9:34 PM
- yes.
- Roy
- have you heard of digital painting?
- or google?
- Roy - Today at 9:35 PM
- i have edited stuff with the paint programs
- Rhea - Today at 9:35 PM
- Ok
- Roy - Today at 9:35 PM
- which i consider painting
- Rhea - Today at 9:35 PM
- So why do you need me to explain this to you further?
- Roy - Today at 9:35 PM
- or texturing
- because it wasnt working and i wanted to know how to do it right
- Rhea - Today at 9:36 PM
- Have you opened your texture as a material in Blender or Maya yet, like I said?
- Roy - Today at 9:36 PM
- i have done that in blender in the past yes
- ive gone all the way to setting up my scene in blender and it got so complicated that i couldnt follow it anymore
- so again nvm its to complicated. ty for your time and i aplogise
