Certain kinds of ingredients, taken from a plant, can drive animals mad. She learned that through experience, and established a method of manipulating humans as she pleases.

In addition, as she is not a living being, poison is harmless against her.

Dolls are usually manipulated by humans. Because of this, she wishes for doll emancipation, but there aren't many dolls who agree with her. To begin with, other dolls don't move on their own...

The suzuran, which weren't expected to bloom, have begun blooming all at once this year. In addition to that, even autumn flowers which weren't supposed to bloom are blooming too. She learned that there are many powers she has never seen in Gensokyo.[/left][/indent][/indent][/collapse]

このように種族として纏まらない妖怪を、特別な種族で呼ぶ事なく、妖怪と呼ぶ。

幻想郷の妖怪の多くは、この『妖怪（＊１）』である。

容姿、能力、性格、危険度、活動時間、活動場所、それぞれ殆ど共通の特徴は少ない。

強いてあげるとすれば、妖怪は人間を襲い、そして捕食する事位である。

必ず例外は存在するが、それでもいくつかの傾向が見られる。

・妖怪は、人間より長命である。

・妖怪は、人間より肉体が頑丈であり、五体がバラバラになる様な事があっても、すぐに治癒する。

・妖怪は、人間よりも信念に作用されやすく、精神的なダメージが致命傷となる。

・妖怪は、余り群れで行動しない。

・妖怪は、自分の都合しか考えない。

人間にとっての最大の敵となるのが妖怪である。

だが、余りにも多様な妖怪が居る為、個々の妖怪の特徴を知ってから妖怪退治に出掛ける必要があるだろう。

人攫い、捕食、家畜泥棒、畑泥棒[/b][/big]

妖怪は、食事の為に人間を襲う。

ただ必要以上に人間を襲わず、空腹時にしか襲わない事が多い。

人間の数が少なくなると、妖怪も困るからである。

また、必ずしも人間だけを食べているのではなく、獣や鳥、魚、野菜、果物、酒等、人間と食生活は変わらない。

ただ、その上に人間を食べる事があるだけである。

人間以外に、家畜や農作物を持って行かれる事もある。

これも深刻な問題である。[/left]



[big][b]対処法[/b][/big]

[left]ちゃんとした対策を練らないと、妖怪退治は難しい。

人間と妖怪では、肉体的な能力差は歴然であり、まともに戦ったのでは一瞬で捕食されてしまうだろう。

ただ、人間を襲う理由の殆どが、捕食する為である。

だから、退治するのでなければ、自分の代わりに食べ物となる何かを差し出すのが良いだろう。

牛一頭でも差し出せば、暫くの間は襲われる事は無いだろう。

結構義理堅い所も多く、逆らわない相手には友好的に接してくれる．

しかし、妖怪退治を行うとなれば話は別である。

人間は、定期的に妖怪退治を行っているが、これは先祖代々から伝わる仕来りである。

幻想郷では、人間は妖怪退治を行わなければいけないのだ（＊２）。

妖怪退治を専門とする職が存在する。

例えば博麗の巫女は最も有名な専門家の一つである。

妖怪退治では、肉体にダメージを与える武器ではなく、何か『謂われ』のある武器が望ましい。

妖怪は、名前や言い伝え等、精神的な攻撃に弱い。

[left]There are many types of youkai with extremely varied powers. Some races have a great number that are all categorized under a certain name, while others can be as few as a single member.

These unique youkai are not called by whatever individual species they may be, but simply "youkai."

Many of the youkai in Gensokyo fall into this "youkai (*1)" section.

Rarely if ever is there any commonality in their appearance, ability, character, danger level, or times and places of activity.

Just about the only thing in common between youkai is that they attack and prey upon humans.

There are definitely exceptions, but many fall towards this trend.

*Youkai have longer lifespans than humans.

*Youkai have stronger bodies than humans, so even if they're split into five parts, they heal right away.

*Youkai are more easily affected by belief than humans, and as a result spiritual damage can cause fatal wounds.

*Youkai generally do not move in groups.

*Youkai only think of themselves.

Youkai are the most dangerous enemies to humans.

However, since they are rather varied, one must be informed of each of their traits before heading out to exterminate them.

Youkai attack humans for food.

However, most do not attack when they are full and satisfied.

If the human population drops, youkai will face trouble as well.

They do not eat only humans, but animals, birds, fish, vegetables, fruits, alcohol and other things humans normally eat.

Still, they consider humans a delicacy above all else.

They steal crops and livestock as well.

This is also serious problem.[/left]



[big][b]Countermeasures[/b][/big]

[left]Unless one thoroughly trains in fighting against them, youkai extermination is difficult.

Youkai have a history of being physically stronger than humans, and trying to fight them may quickly end up as feeding them.

However, the reason most youkai attack humans is because they need prey.

That's why one should offer something else to eat in place of themselves.

Offering a cow will save you from being attacked for a while.

There are many that have a strong sense of duty, and will befriend those who do not turn against them.

But exterminating youkai is a different story.

Humans regularly perform exterminations, but this is a custom passed down from ancestors.

In Gensokyo, humans must exterminate youkai (*2).

There are those that specialize in youkai extermination.

For example, the Hakurei shrine maiden is the most well-known specialist.

In extermination, one does not use weapons that cause physical damage. Weapons with an "origin" are more preferable.

Youkai are weak to spiritual attacks such as names or traditions.

妖怪は寿命が長いとはいえ、当然新しく生まれる事もある。

メディスン・メランコリーは生まれたばかりの妖怪の一人である。

捨てられた人形が、時を経て妖怪に成長したものである。

姿は腹話術に使う大きめの人形程度である。

もともとの人形がその位の大きさだったのだと思われる。

妖怪になっても体も人形のままである。

毒を操る能力は、鈴蘭の咲く無名の丘（＊１）に長い間放置されていた事で身に付いた能力だと思われる。

食事に毒を盛る。

毒を使って人間を操る。

毒の影響を受けやすい（＊２）人間にとっては脅威の人形である。

ただ、まだ若い妖怪の為、圧倒的に経験や知識が浅い。

人間よりも無知である。

その為、相手が妖怪だろうが人間だろうが手加減という物を知らない。

相手の力量を見抜く事も出来ないのだ。

それ故に恐ろしい。

無防備な印象を受けるが、それは妖怪としての経験が浅すぎる為だろう。

成長するまでは迂闊に刺激しない方が良い。[/left]

[left]毒の種類は全くわからない。

花の毒、蛇の毒、蜂の毒、蜘蛛の毒、直接触れると爛れる毒、風下にいるだけで倒れてしまう毒、様々である。

それ故、毒に冒された場合、決定的な治療法は無い。

毒の本当の恐ろしさは、この妖怪と対峙した時に分かるだろう。

それは、近くに居るだけで妖怪すらも怯むほどの猛毒を浴びる事でもあるのだ。

まずこの時点で勝負どころではない。

この妖怪が精神的に成長するまでは退治するのは控えよう。

現在の弱点は、その経験の浅さにある。

相手は人間を嫌っているが、上手く言い包めてしまえば、コロッと騙される。

人間嫌いの人間の振りをすると良い。

毒の威力は恐ろしいし、後遺症も残る。

長い間潜伏する遅効性の毒（＊３）も恐ろしい。

全力で戦闘を回避する必要がある。

Even though youkai live long, naturally, new ones come into being as well.

Medicine Melancholy is one of these newborn youkai.

She was a discarded doll changed into youkai after a long time.

Her form is that of a large doll used in ventriloquism.

It is believed that the original doll from where she came was roughly that size.

Even after becoming a youkai, her body is still that of a doll.

It is believed that the ability to manipulate poison was naturally attained by being left on the Nameless Hill (*1), where numerous lilies-of-the-valley bloom, for a long time.

She pours poison in food.

She uses poison to manipulate humans.

She's a threat to humans that are easily affected by poison (*2).

Being a young youkai, her experience and knowledge is overwhelmingly shallow.

She possesses less knowledge than humans.

Because of this, whether she's dealing with a human or youkai, she doesn't know the meaning of holding back.

She also can't see how strong her opponent is.

Therefore, she is fearsome.

However, you must never chase after her.

She may return to spread a poisonous fog over the village.

Since she gives the impression that she's defenseless, that just shows that her experience as a youkai is shallow.

You shouldn't carelessly startle her until she matures.[/left]

[left]The type of poison is unknown.

There are many types of poison: flower's poison, snake's poison, bee's poison, spider's poison, poison that causes inflammation just by touching it and poison that knocks you unconscious just by whiffing it.

Because of that, if one is affected by her poison there is no definite treatment method.

You will probably understand the true terror of poison when you confront this youkai.

Even youkai suffer after being showered in the strong poison just by being near her.

At this point, it's not the time to be thinking about fighting.

Until this youkai develops mentally, refrain from exterminating her.

Her current weak point is her shallow experience.

She hates humans, but if you skillfully manage your words, you can deceive her easily.

Pretend to be a human that hates humans.

The strength of her poison is fearsome, and can leave aftereffects.

Poisons that remain latent for a long time and cause delayed effects (*3) are also dangerous.

You must avoid fighting her at all costs.
