  1. (description)
  2. Oakheart is a fairly new village, founded 10 years ago by a group of friends looking to get away from the stress and speed of modern living. In that time, they turned the already-fertile land into a veritable food forest of fruit-and-nut-bearing trees, edible mushrooms, and vegetables, which supports the village at a subsistence level, plus a little extra to trade for needed supplies and the occasional luxury. The plants pretty much take care of themselves, so there isn’t much need to work. “Jobs” here are more like hobbies elsewhere — you set your own hours and could get away with doing nothing, though others might look down on you for it, and the NEET life would get pretty boring without screens to pass the time. Speaking of — life is very simple but not completely primitive. There’s no electricity, but the town has a large cistern and septic digester that allows for sinks in the public kitchen and some shared bathrooms, and folks have gotten very creative in finding uses for wood-burning stoves.

  4. The village is pretty isolated and only has 103 people, so everyone knows everyone, for better or worse. There is conflict, but everyone wants it resolved quickly, and for the most part folks succeed there. There’s plenty of time to practice art, music, and the like — supplies are an issue, but the need to make do with what’s available often leads to different kinds of creative output which you wouldn’t see in the cities. Collaborative storytelling is another well-loved passtime, both freeform and as a PnP RPG.

  7. Mediator — Eve
  8. So, officially, there’s no local government here — nobody’s actually bothered to put in the paperwork to incorporate. When there’s a fight that people can’t work out amongst themselves, though, they generally turn to Eve. She’s been here since the beginning and was probably the single person most responsible for making the dream a reality, both in terms of leadership and just the amount of stuff she does for the town. Her work leaves time for little in the way of play, but rumor is that she’s a fantastic singer if you can drag her away from her projects for long enough. She’s friendly with everyone in town, but isn’t very close to anyone. To be honest, she probably gives too much of herself — maybe you could try to lighten her load?

  10. (Quarters)
  11. Oakheart doesn’t have any vacant homes, so you’ll have to find a roommate at least to start. Eve will find someone for you though — and if she can’t, she has some cushions she could throw down on her floor for you. Regardless of where you end up, it’s not much — most folks have one room with a bed, a stove, and maybe a chair or two. Family and group houses might have a bit more, but not much — every house out here is built by hand. How long you’ll stay with your roommate is kind of up to you and them — if either of you want out, the easiest way will be to get some friends and build you your own place.

  14. Gardener
  15. There’s enough walnuts and apples in the forest to keep you from going hungry, but some food takes a little more effort if you want variety. Tomatoes, chickens, potatoes, herbs, spices — with a little effort, your diet can become a lot more interesting. You can start your own garden if you want — there’s plenty of space for it — or you can sign up to help out an one of the two large, established plots. In exchange, you’ll get a share of the harvest, which you can eat or sell or trade as you like.

  17. Chef
  18. There’s been general interest in setting up a sort of village restaurant out of the public kitchen, but so far nobody has stepped up to make it happen. You’d probably have to work out some kind of deal with the gardens to get ingredients, and of course menu planning for so many people is probably a challenge, but there’s nothing insurmountable in the way. Who knows, maybe you could even attract some city money from tourists — an inn in a quaint little village away from it all has gotta appeal to some of them.

  20. (Event)
  21. Midsummer
  22. The summer solstice is…a lot. Most folks don’t end up remembering it. Do you know how many drugs grow in the ground? Anyways, it’s a big party with lots of food and music and dancing and dancing (wink wink). The idea is that it’s big outpouring of beauty to make the faeries happy and ensure good luck in the coming year, but there’s definitely some competition in it as well — the whole village comes together to make it happen, and the people who do more tend to get remembered, and paid back in favors throughout the year.
