  1. Discord is a text and voice service that combines together the ease of Teamspeak, the calling capability of Skype and the messaging features of popular chat services such as Slack. What does all of this mean? Let's break down the main features that Discord uses from other competing products;
  2.
  3. TeamSpeak: Users usually have to pay for their own servers for better voice quality and more people to join voice channels. In many ways it's a lot like Mumble. The benefit that TeamSpeak provides is easy access to voice and text channels for clients, but setting up a server is a fair bit of work; More work than the typical user wishes to do, since hosts need to usually acquire a license, authenticate themselves and provide the means for others to join.
  4.
  5. How Discord resolves Teamspeak's issues; There's no need for anything complicated. Make a community on Discord's centralized servers and share an invite link. That's it.
  6.
  7. Skype: Users usually have to register for an account to use Microsoft's Skype service. Anyone can call anybody for free, which sounds perfectly find if you know somebody's Skype account and not made friends with them yet, but this can also lead to random strangers who may want your personal information calling you at random. Not only that, users are bombarded with advertising if they do not block the ads via modification of their system hosts file, and really, that's not cool since ads on Skype, while usually not, can be malicious.
  8.
  9. How Discord resolves Skype's issues; Discord has no ads, and only friends can call one another. Discord also allows for group direct messaging between up to ten people, which means someone doesn't have to make a new community just to bring together people from other servers... so long they're friends with the one hosting the group.
  10.
  11. Slack: There's nothing much wrong with it. But, it's text only; Not voice. Often, Slack communities will recommend a different service for voice, such as Mumble or TeamSpeak.
  12.
  13. How Discord resolves Slack's issues; Discord has the capability to pin messages, use chat bots (of varying purposes) and does it all with the capability to use your voice and talk.
  14.
  15. Discord is also available as a web app within your preferred browser so long it supports using a microphone, and the best part; It's all free of charge! Simply join a server and make some friends.
  16.
  17. Discord wraps up all that is good about the above other services in a user-friendly interface, with the option of having an overlay in select applications. Centralized servers owned by Discord allows for easy setup, since they do all the heavy lifting for you, and it's all free of ads, and free of charge.
