  1. During the 0.1d event today I just realised how much stuff from the older versions I have actually forgotten existed. None of these were particularly big changes but instead small subtle bugs and differences which are not present in the current version yet still had an effect on the game at the time. These brought out some nostalgic memories of times back then. Some of these differences were:
  2.
  3. • The launcher with no server browser.
  4.
  5. • The shotguns in game had their original data values from single player. Both the shotgun and the stubby had a much further reach.
  6.
  7. • The animation of the player being knocked over wasn't synced properly resulting in players having shotgun battles which could last for a long period of time where shots from one player wouldn't be seen by another player due to them sliding around on the ground.
  8.
  9. • Even still when a player was knocked over and was laying on the ground they would regularly be still standing up but "walking on the spot" In this case the player laying down on the ground could hold in the fire button whilst aiming at the other player and still ghost shoot back even though they were on the ground.
  10.
  11. • Tyres of vehicles weren't synced as well this was both a good thing at times and a bad thing. If a player was running towards a vehicle you could pop the tire of that vehicle but they even got on it. The bad thing was that if the shot didn't sync properly you would see them driving away at full speed with a burst tire which caused the vehicle sync to mess up.
  12.
  13. • When a player left the game there was no quit message. It was always a timeout message therefore you couldn't tell if someone had rage quit or just crashed.
  14.
  15. • There was no location damage such as headshots or receipt of such shots in the text box when you killed someone.
  16.
  17. One bug which had much significance was the Sniper/Rocket click bug. At the time weapons which required first person aiming such as the Snipers/Rocket launchers were not properly synced. If a player tried to use them it would result in a clicking noise just like the empty click a gun makes when there no more bullets left in the chamber. This noise could not only be heard by the player that tried to use the gun but also everyone else in the server regardless of the distance from that player.
  18.
  19. Therefore these guns weren't included in any server configurations as they were useless. The only way that they were really obtainable was through trainers, this was a good indicator for an admin to know when there was a cheater in the server. Occasionally there was a new player who would join the server and activate some trainer designed for single player such as the old "Vice Ultimate Trainer" or the "PizzaDox 10+" trainer for Vice City. These players would then use some form of hack to spawn all the weapons from a particular weapon set and due to the Rocket launcher looking to be the most ideal weapon to use after the Minigun they would try it out and to no avail find that it didn't work. Unknowingly however, they did not realise that by doing so they were also making allot of noise with the bug and were alerting admins in game and basically shouting:
  20.
  21. "Hey, Admins there is a cheater here and it's me!"
  22.
  23. This would then alert any admins ingame that somewhere in the server there was a player with a sniper which was more than likely obtained from using a trainer or some other player who had a trainer and previously died dropping the weapons. From here on trying to find this player there was only 2 approaches from what I remember.
  24.
  25. A) Since there was no spectate mode at the time admins had to manually use the inbuilt go to command on every player in game and try to find that player as quickly as possible without alerting them. This proved extremely difficult as it was dependant on the player having the laser/rocket launcher equipped on them at the time and it took up allot of time itself.
  26.
  27. B) There was another bug as well which could be abused to help in admin situations. On the spawn screen an admin could type /kill. This would then cause the player to die and "respawn" but remain unspawned/unsynced from everyone else as if they were still on the spawn menu but the camera would be in third person. From here the player couldn't move with the keyboard but if you had a controller you could freely move around allowing you to monitor players unnoticed.
  28. Looking back to some of the crap that admins had to go through to administrate the server and the methods that were used are funny looking back but at the same time completely and extremely inefficient but that the kind of stuff that we were dependant on because of the limited stuff.
