- Read all you can about home soapmaking for tips and safety.
- My soap making ingredients come from either Essential Depot or Bulk Apothecary; they provide product SAP values.
- 39 oz coconut oil; 16 oz palm oil;
- 9.4 oz lye (NaOH), 23 oz H2O; based on SAP value.
- Add oil to crock pot once measured. Medium/Low heat.
- Mix lye to water (never water to lye); off gassing is toxic/hazardous; do in well ventilated area;
- Lye heats up to close to boiling (don't let boil!).
- I try to add lye after solution clears to oil that has just melted (~100 degF).
- Mixing! Monitor temperature. Keep some chilled H2O (up to 6 oz) nearby if soap exceeds 195 degF (bubbling up).
- Once soap mix gets past the first 30-40 minutes, you can let sit for 1 hour. Make sure it goes through a temperature spike
- before letting sit. 2 hours if you don't have pH testers. Paper can work but you have to mix with a splash of water before testing.
- After fully cooked, add ~75 mL fragrance (Eucalyptus & Frankincense, equal parts).
