Plot 4: Antipope

He was dressed in street clothes.

That'd be fine. If he had to conduct a peace-keeping sermon in them he'd be glad to. Put him closer to his followers, and further from the fanatics.

The rain was falling hard. Six inches, by his count. Maybe nobody'd turn up. That'd be nice. A sermon to no one. Might get him some mythic status.

But he could do without the fame.

The first of those in attendance filed in to the plaza, shivering, hiding from the cold. Suffering. Maybe he could help.

Quiet. Moon was in the middle of the sky, so it made some kind of sense.

He had a sizable crowd around him now! All well and good. Only thing separating him from them was one overturned soapbox, and his diminutive stature meant he was on eye level with some.

The rain continued to fall. It was soothing, almost.

Alright, full crowd. Not much recourse now. Time to talk of religion and loyalty.

"Hey. You probably don't know me, which is good! We can get to know each other this way. Isn't that nice?

So. Yeah. Revolts! Happening right now. Kind of scary! I'm sure some of you believe God's fated us to get crushed here. Don't blame you. Way things have been going recently, might seem like it's about an even chance.

Well, good news. We're fine.

God punishes us, yes. That's part of how he loves us. Sort of like a mother and a child. You have to exercise some discipline once in a while, maybe test somebody's mettle.

But we're fine. We'll all be fine. We'll come out the other side in a much better place.

Because Egypt's a great state, and if this is a test, I have no doubt all of you will ace it. We're kind, virtuous, able to keep the peace, if we strive for it. That's how humans are. And if there's one things Egyptians are it's able to strive for those things.

We can adapt, grow, change. No need for anyone to revolt for fear of things going downhill, stir the pot further into anarchy, if odds are it'll be over in two years, tops, if we just act noble.

Help out your neighbor next time you see them. Might bring you closer to peace."

Best to keep it short, he felt. More impact that way. Hopefully a wayward soul or two would stay on the right course due to his words. Nothing would make him more happy.
