  1. The Clark Estate Will
  2. IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN.

  4. I Joel Clark of Granby in the County of Hartford, State of Connecticut being of sound and disposing mind and memory in view of the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death,

  6. And the consequent necessity of being at all times prepared for either do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament, disposing of the Worldly goods and Estate with which it has pleased God to bless me, in manner and form as follows.

  8. After my decease it is my desire that my body should be buried in a decent and proper manner and that my just debts and funeral charges should be paid by my Executor herein after named out of such personal Estate as is not included in the first legacy of household furniture herein after given.

  10. I do first give and bequeth to my beloved Wife Ruth Clark one half of my household furniture including such articles as are frequently and properly used in the house, except my own personal wardrobe, to be her own property.

  12. I do next give and bequeth to my said beloved wife Ruth Clark to be her own property one third part of all the money and notes or choses in action [editor note: a "chose in action" is a right to sue somebody, or take legal action, not a grammatical error] that shall remain of my Estate after paying my just debts and funeral charges and the expenses of settling my estate and I do also give and bequeath to her the said Ruth Clark the use and improvement during her natural life of one third part of all the other kinds of persoanl Estate that I may own at the time of my decease.

  14. I do further give and bequeath and devise to my said beloved wife Ruth Clark the use and improvement during her natural life of one third part of all the Real Estate I may own at the time of my decease as her right of Dower therein.

  16. All the rest and residue of my Estate both Real and Personal or of whatever nature except such as in herein differently disposed of shall after my decease be divided into three parts in such manner that one of the three parts shall be twelve hundred Dollars less than each of the other two parts which other two parts are to be equal, and then I do give bequeath and devise the smallest part or the one that is twelve hundred dollars less than the other two to the children of my Son Joel B. Clark (deceased) [wiz?] Martha J. Chadwick, Celia C. Cornish, Senea A. Clarke, Huldah G. Clarke, Albert A. Clarke, and Walter P. Clark, to be and remain to them and their heirs and asigns forever and to be equally divided between said children.

  18. I do also bequeath and devise one of the other two equal parts to my Son Albert Clark, his airs and assigns forever.

  20. I do give bequeath and devise one of the other two equal parts to my Daughter Lydia Calkins wife of Daniel O. Calkins her hair and assigns forever.

  22. Mrs. Mary Griswold holds a Note signed by Daniel O. Calkins as principal and myself as surity for the sum of Five hundred dollars Dated Janiary 27th 1841, payable one year after the date with annual interest at 6 percent.

  24. Now if I or my Estate after my decease shall be compelled to pay said Note or any part thereof it is my will that the amount that I or my Estate shall thereby suffer shall be recovered so far towards the share herein before given to Lydia Calkins

  26. And I do hereby make constitute and appoint Anson Bates of said Graby Executor of this my last Will and Testament revoking all former Wills --

  28. In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal at said Granby this
  29. Twenty Six day of March AD 1856
