  1. /w/ Phone Thread - Android
  2.
  3. #1 - Root and Rom
  4. #2 - Launchers
  5. #3 - Applications and Widgets
  6. #4 - Icons
  7. #5 - Themes
  8. #6 - Tips
  9.
  10. #1 - Root and Rom
  11. Getting root access and installing a custom rom is a way to get the most out of ricing. However it is not needed to start your ricing experience.
  12.
  13. Since each phone and carrier is different, it is highly suggested that you take a look at the XDA developers’ page for your device.
  14. They provide detailed steps that are needed for getting root access or for installing a new rom.
  15. You can even get applications that are in development that may or may not be in the play store.
  16. http://www.xda-developers.com/
  17.
  18. Some of the most popular roms are listed below.
  19.
  20. CyanogenMod
  21. http://www.cyanogenmod.org/
  22. A good entry-level ROM for those new to the scene updates often and uses the latest Android version with some customization features. [Most popular]
  23.
  24. Slimbean
  25. http://www.slimroms.net/
  26. This is by far one of if not the smallest roms with little to no bloat apps. Includes a lot of features for how small it is
  27.
  28. Paranoid Android
  29. Check XDA Developer
  30. Best rom for customizing the size and colors of the UI as well as many other things. Also has the feature to use an alternative to the nav bar called Pie (Not an exclusive to Paranoid Android anymore).
  31.
  32. AOKP
  33. http://aokp.co/
  34. Like CyanogenMod with more features.
  35.
  36. If you want a more detail look into roms and if you like spreadsheets, it is suggested to look at this.
  37. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0Auzhy7U8YwLodEtnZG9GMzdvLXI0N2RfWlV2NHNWNVE&toomany=true#gid=1
  38.
  39. *Most of the branded ROMs tend to have less customization than a stock-based ROM would.
  40.
  41. #2 - Launchers
  42. Only the popular ones are listed. There are literally hundreds in the play store. Simply searching for “Launchers” in the play store will bring up more than we can list here.

  62. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobint.hololauncherplus
  63.
  64. *Prices vary based on your country, these are in USD.
  65. If you are cheap and don't like pirating and want the most features, go with Apex Free.
  66.
  67. #3 - Applications and Widgets
  68. Again, only the most popular ones are listed.
  69.
  70. UCCW: Custom Clock Widget
  71. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.vineetsirohi.customwidget
  72. Allows infinite customization and lets you create your own clock widgets. Most customization in the thread is done with UCCW.
  73.
  74. Zooper Widget (Free)
  75. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.zooper.zwfree
  76. Zooper Widget Pro ($1.99)
  77. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.zooper.zwpro
  78. Same as UCCW, different interface, slight changes in functionality. Equally useful app, you will need uccw or Zooper (not both) to really get a good rice made.
  79.
  80. KLWP Live wallpaper maker
  81. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.kustom.wallpaper&hl=en
  82. This one is a newcomer to the android rice game. Similar functions as UCCW O or Zooper, but as a live wallpaper rather than a widget.
  83.
  84. HD Widgets
  85. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cloudtv.hdwidgets
  86. It is like Zooper and UCCW.
  87.
  88. Apollo
  89. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2196385
  90. A Music Player that comes with many custom roms. It can be installed on any rom, as long as 3rd party sources are enabled.
  91.
  92. 1Weather
  93. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handmark.expressweather
  94. Weather application with customizable minimal style widgets.
  95.
  96. Minimalistic Text (Free)
  97. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext
  98. Minimalistic Text Key ($2.01)
  99. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.devmil.minimaltext.donate
  100. A nice app with a lot of features for creating a text based widget. Allows access to some information UCCW and Zooper can’t/don’t show.
  101.
  102. FiveWallpapers
  103. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rom.livewallpaper.fivewallpapers
  104. Useful for putting different pictures on different workspaces (i.e. Multiple images, for each page of your homescreen)
  105.
  106. WidgetLocker ($2.99)
  107. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teslacoilsw.widgetlocker
  108. A lockscreen “replacement” app that makes the lockscreen behave more like your homescreen. You can add custom widgets and “sliders” to unlock the phone with. Performance is hit or miss and many people report increased battery drain from it. However if you want a minimal styled and custom lockscreen, this is pretty much the best option.
  109.
  110. GO Locker
  111. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jiubang.goscreenlock
  112. Another lockscreen “replacement” app similar to widget locker but full of bloat and ads; there is no real reason to use this one unless you are running a version of android under 4.0.
  113.
  114. Holo Locker
  115. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobint.locker
  116. Yet another lockscreen “replacement” this one doesn’t offer as many custom options but it is much more reliable. It also works with phones that are not running newer version of android.
  117.
  118. *Prices vary based on your country, these are in USD.
