  1. Erynn awoke early to slip out of the hotel, leaving Trench behind to clean up the mess and explain what he was doing to the hoteliers. It didn't matter; she got hers, and all he'd get was a slap on the wrist. As a courtesy, she left the blacksmith's address on a sheet of paper on the end table. All she had to do was make sure "Sophine" didn't show up again. And she was an infiltrator; if a team of professional investigators couldn't find her, one half-orc in clanky armor couldn't.
  2. Being early, she decided to check on her job postings at the Guild--taking care to go to the one on the far side of town.
  3. "Hm." Odd. Most of her assignments were solo jobs. It wasn't the first time she'd been assigned a partner, but there it was in her mailbox, the sealed envelope with her partner's dossier. She cut it open--the partner was always more interesting than the assignment--and looked over the packet inside.
  4. "Aaaah, shit."
  5.
  6. -----------------------------
  7.
  8. “You're silly even for a man.” A voice giggled from behind the veil. Trench remembered this place, it was somewhere in the wildness he wandered as a child. A calm pond that shimmered beneath the moonlight. Trenched rubbed his eyes and looked down. He was walking across the surface of the water.
  9.
  10. “I can't walk on water.” Trench stated exasperated. The beginning of frenzied thoughts formed in his mind.
  11.
  12. “That's because you're sleeping.” A woman with a face he recognized said to him. Where did he remember her. He had just met her, she had a kind face, and she called herself Sophine. As he came to that realization he shot upwards into a sitting position. He was in a large room, sitting in a bed many time larger then anything he would pick for himself.
  13.
  14. He looked to his left, and to his right, it appeared that he was alone. He called out, “Sophine, you here?!?” But was answered with silence. He got out of bed and walked into the restroom, which was also empty. He wandered back into the bedroom and saw a small sheet of paper on the end table. Opening it up a small smile came to his face. He pocketed the paper and walked over to his armor before he started storing it in his bag. Now he could finally get those repairs. All he needed was to get one good job to get him on his feet. With a final piece in the bag, he turned around feeling another presence in the room.
  15.
  16. A fancy looking man with a two guards, stared at him with narrowed eyes. “See boss, I told you I heard someone in here. Now what do you have to say for yourself Orc!”
  17.
  18. Trench shrugged, “I was visiting a friend?” The guards smirked and pulled out their swords.
  19.
  20. The fancy man yelled, “Get that thief!” He pointed at Trench his hands still in his backpack.
  21.
  22. Trench may not have been the most world wary person, but he had two things. One, he traveled lightly, and Two, he had thick skin. He turned and ran scooping up his pack as he did. Since they were at the doors he didn't have many options, at least he was on the first floor. He dived through the beautiful stained glass window, tumbling out into the street. “Sorry!” He yelled behind him as he ran out into the city.
  23.
  24. Besides a few cuts and bruises he was no worse for wear. He ran for a good whiles before he felt he was safe, then spent the afternoon at a park he had found. He asked for directions to the address he had and soon made it to the blacksmith. The man charged fair, and even gave him some loaner armor as his was repaired. It was perhaps some of the most worn pot metal he had see, but it would count in a pinch.
  25.
  26. His business concluded for now he set his sights on the Guild. They welcomed him and gave him a paper making it official, he was now a member. They assigned him a partner, and gave him a few details on a job. He opened up the folder and he saw a face he never expected to see again. Stuffing the papers into his pack Trenched raced off with a wide grin. They were suppose to meet in a tavern before they headed out and he made no delays.
