時雨「まず僕の方から説明させてもらおうか」
Shizure: Please allow the first part of the explanation to come from me then.
時雨「僕たち三人の仕事を簡単に言うと――」
Shizure: To put it simply, the work the three of us are involved in is――
悠馬「…………」
Kana: ........
俺は時雨さんの言葉に耳を傾け、沈黙を守っている。
I keep the silence, paying close attention to Shizure's words.
あの子は？
Who was that girl?
あの風は？
What was that wind?
そして空から降る、あの羽根とは……？
What were those feathers, falling down from the sky?
そうして、なぜあの子は消えたのか。
And finally, why did that girl dissapear?
世界を守るとは。自分が消えればそれでいいとは、一体。
What in the world did she mean by "protect the world", and "it's fine, even if I have to dissapear".
加奈が疑問に思うだろうそれらのことに、どのようにして時雨さんが応えるのだろうか。
Those are likely the questions that are floating around in Kana's mind at the moment, and I wonder how if Shizure will be able to answer them.
時雨「――今日、君が見た“あの子”のような人たちを救い出すこと。それが僕たちの、悠馬くんと夏目くんのお仕事なんだ」
Shizure: ――is to rescue people like that girl you saw today. That is our job, the job of Yuuma, and Natsume.
加奈「救い出す？」
Kana: To rescue?
時雨「そう。この世の全てを纏める理不尽な拘束力に目を付けられ、不自由を強制された人間たちをこの寮の敷地内まで“逃がす”んだ」
Shizure: Yes. Turning our eyes to the illogical constrictive forces collected throughout the universe, we help people who forcefully had their free will taken away escape to the interior of this dormitory.
加奈「救い出すって……いったい、何からですか？」
Kana: To rescue.... exactly, what are you rescuing them from?
時雨「そうだね。スムーズに共通理解を得るためには、まず前提として話さなくてはいけない事がいくつかあるのだけれど……」
Shizure: How do you put this..... Well, there are a few preliminary things that have to be discussed first in order for you to explain it in a way you can understand.
そう言って時雨さんは人差し指を立てる。
Saying this, Shizure puts out his index finger.
時雨「もう君も知っている通り、この世にはたくさんの世界がある。そう、たくさん、たくさんだ」
Shizure: It's precisely as you already know, in this universe, there are many worlds. Many, many worlds.
時雨「ここの、この学生寮の地下室から繋がれる世界だけではなく、本当にたくさんの世界がある」
Shizure: There are not just the worlds connected to the basement of this dormitory, there are really a lot of worlds out there.
時雨「どうしてそのようなものが在るのかと問われても、在るのだから在るのであって仕方がないというような、そんな曖昧な返答しか出来ないのだけれど……」
Shizure: Even if you ask me why things like that exist, all I would be able to give is a vague answer like "they exist because they exist, and all you can do is accept it".
時雨「ともかく、そうしてそれら数ある全ての世界を統べる場所が、この世のどこかにあるんだ」
Shizure: In any case, the location that supervises all these multiduous worlds, exists somewhere in the universe.
加奈「全ての世界を、統べる場所？」
Kana: The place that supervises all these worlds?
時雨「ああ、うん。……ちょっと例え話をしようか」
Shizure: Yeah. Hmm.... Shall we go on a little "what if" scenario.
時雨「僕たちはよく、何か個人の力では耐えがたく思えるような災難に遭遇すると、“神様どうかお願いします”と祈るだろう？」
Shizure: When we are thrown in to a disastrous or calamitous situation which we believe is too difficult to handle with our own abilities, we often pray something like "God, please, do something", right?
時雨「“神様どうかお願いします。私たちを助けて”という具合に」
Shizure: A condition in which we think "God, please, do something. Save us".
加奈「……そうですね。そう言うこともあると思います」
Kana: ......Hmm, that's right isn't it. I think there is something like that.
時雨「うん。その場所そのものが、僕たちの言う“神様”なんだ」
Shizure: Right. That place is the very thing we call "God".
加奈「……え？」
Kana: ....huh?
時雨「その世界、その場所が、僕らの概念上で言う“神様”なんだと置き換えることが出来る」
Shizure: That world, that place, we are able to replace it with a concept above our understanding, the concept of "God".
加奈「世界が、場所が、それそのものが、神様？」
Kana: The world, the place, the thing itself, is god?
時雨「そう。わかりにくいかもしれないけれど、その場所がこの世に生きる命や自然現象などの全てを支配している」
Shizure: Right. It may be difficult to understand, but that place governs all life and natural phenomenon that exists.
時雨「僕も、君も、この町に生きる人たちだけじゃなくて、もっともっと多くの人たちの事情を全て、把握している」
Shizure: You, I, and not just the people living in this city, that place has a grasp on all the circumstances of an incomprehensibely large number of people.
加奈「事情ですか……？それと言うのは、一体どういったものなんですか？」
Kana: Circumstances....? What exactly do you mean when you say that?
時雨「それは、僕たちの運命だったり宿命だったり、そういうものの全てを、と言うことだよ。だから、“神様”」
Shizure: By that I mean things like our fate, our destiny, everything. That's why, "God".
時雨「――なにも自律した人間的思考回路が超越者でなくてはならないという道理はどこにもないんだ。意思を持たない場所や物が神様だってあり得ていい」
Shizure: There is no place for the human-like philosophy of Autonomy and Transcendentalism. You can claim the reason places and things with no purpose exist is because God exists.
鈴「…………」
Suzu: ......
時雨「……そしてもうひとつだけ、雑談をしようか」
Shizure: .....And following that, shall we chat about one more thing.
時雨「これからまた突飛な話をするけれど、どうか引いたりしないで欲しいんだ」
Shizure: This is going to be another rather crazy-sounding discussion but please, don't back out now.
加奈「はい。……わかりました」
Kana: Alright..... Understood.
加奈はこっくりとうなずいた。
Kana nods in assent.
突飛な話か。
Crazy huh.
もう十分に突飛で、唐突だ。これ以上ないってくらいに。
The discussion so far has already been plenty crazy, so much so that it's difficult to imagine anything that could possibly make it more crazy.
それでも加奈は真剣な表情で時雨さんの次の言葉を待っている。
Despite that, Kana is waiting for Shigure's next words with a serious expression.
時雨「加奈ちゃんは集合的無意識と言う考え方を訊いたことはないかな？」
Shigure: Kana, have you ever heard the phrase the "collective unconsciousness"?
加奈「いいえ？」
Kana: No?
時雨「それは宗教や哲学の枠内にある超自然的な考え方だ」
Shigure: It's a supernatural way of thinking that exists within the boundaries of philosophy and religion.
時雨「人間の未来も過去も現在も、その全てがつぶさに記録されている精神的な深層世界が、この宇宙のどこかにあり……」
Shigure: It states that a person's future, past, and present, are all recorded in precise detail in a world that exists on a deep mental level, and that this place exists somewhere in the universe.
時雨「その場所には、この世にあり続けるものには逃れようのない、けして避けることの出来ない“運命”が事細かに決められ存在していると、そういう考え方だ」
Shigure: It's a way of thinking that states there exists a "fate" decided in minute detail that any existance that continues to exist in the world is unable to run away from or avoid.
時雨「そういった信仰や哲学を迷信だオカルトだと、唯物論者や科学者たちはけして認めようとはしないけれど……」
Shigure: Religion, philosophy, the superstitious occult, materialists, and scientists will never recognize such a thing......
時雨「でもね、真実の蓋を開けてみると、そういった特異点が実際に存在しているんだよ、この世界のテッペンには」
Shigure: However if you look at reality, a singular point like this in actuality does exist, at the apex of this world.
時雨「認めようと認めまいと、信じようと信じまいと。重力の力が誰しも平等に働くように、それはごく当たり前に僕らの静かなる隣人としてすぐ横に存在している」
Shigure: Whether you recognize the existence of it or not, and whether you believe in it or not, like how the force of gravity works on everyone equally, it of course still exists right next to us as a silent neighbor.
時雨「繰り返すようだけど、僕が“神様”と定義付けるその場所には、この世の全てが詰まっているんだ」
Shigure: I may be repeating myself here, but in the place to which I attached the definition of "God", is where everything in this world eventually ends up.
時雨「もちろん、今日僕が君にこの話をするということも含まれている。とも言える。微妙な言い方をして申し訳ないが、この寮内は不干渉地帯で例外だからね……」
Shigure: Of course, this means that the conversation I am having with you today is contained as well. You could say included. I apologize for this strange phrasing, but the interior of the dorm is a "Non-interference Zone"(perfect vacuum?), which makes it an exception.
時雨「とまあ、ともかく予定調和なんだよ、何事も。全ては決められたとおりに物事は生まれて進み終わっていく」
Shigure: Well basically, everything is Predetermined. Everything goes exactly as determined as they come in to existence until they dissapear.
時雨「そういう風にして、その神様の場所にはこの世の全ての詳細なシナリオが、詰め込まれているわけだ」
Shigure: And like this, every single scenario in this world is crammed in to "God's Domain".
加奈「……それは、どういった場所なんですか？どういった世界、なんですか？」
Kana:..... What kind of place is that? What kind of world?
時雨「そうだな。そこのところはなんて説明をすれば、わかりやすいのか……」
Shizure: Hmm... Let's see... What would be a way to explain about a place like that which would be easy to understand.....
鈴「うん。それなら、そこから先は私が説明しようか」
Suzu: Mhm. In that case, how about I pick up the explanation from here.
渋い顔をし言葉を濁した時雨さんをフォローするようにして、鈴さんが会話を引き継ぐ。
As if acting as Shizure's follow up as he stumbles for words with a frown, Suzu takes over the conversation.
鈴「そこはね、本屋さんなんだよ」
Suzu: That place, is a bookstore.
鈴さんは『そうだよ』と言ってうなずいた。
Suzu nods as if saying "yep, that's right".
鈴「それは不思議な本屋だ……」
Suzu: It's quite a mysterious bookstore.....
鈴「そこはね、誰も知らない遠い遠い所にある、どのような願いも叶う不思議な場所なんだ」
Suzu: It's a far far place that nobody knows about, a mysterious place that can grant any wish.
加奈「願いが、叶う？どんな願いもですか？」
Kana: Grant, a wish? Any kind of wish?
鈴「うん。いま、管理人がその場所を“神様”と言ったけど、私はちょっと違う意見だな」
Suzu: Yep. Right now, the manager called that place "God", however I view that place a little bit differently.
鈴「その本屋を例えて言うなら……“あの世”と言うか“天国”と言った方が、よりしっくりくるように私は思うんだ」
Suzu: If you were to call that bookstore something then.... I think "the otherworld" or "heaven" would be more fitting.
加奈「天国の本屋さんですか……？」
Kana: The bookstore of heaven?
鈴「ああ、そうだね。そう言えばそんなタイトルの本があったな。あれは素敵なお話だった」
Suzu: Yeah, that's right. Hmm, now that you think about it, there's a book with that title. That was a pretty wonderful story.
鈴さんは苦笑しながらもうなずいて、
Suzu nods with a bit of a strained smile.
鈴「そこへは生きている人間は行けないんだ。私たちが“最果ての古書店”と呼ぶその本屋のドアを開けられるのは、死んだ人間の命だけ」
Suzu: That's a place that people who are alive can't go. The only ones of us who are able to open the door of the bookstore called "Farthest Ends Antique Bookstore", are those who are dead.
鈴「その場所には、その本屋には、死んだ人間の魂だけが自動的に集められ、そうしてその命は一冊の本に纏められる」
Suzu: In that place, in that bookstore, the soul of a dead human is automatically assembled, and compiled in a book.
加奈「死んだ人間は本になる？」
Kana: A dead human turns in to a book?
鈴「そう……心の中に、夢を叶える特別な力を付与されて」
Suzu: Yes..... In the center of their heart, a special power to grant their dream is bestowed upon them.
加奈「夢を叶える、特別な力……？」
Kana: A special power, to grant their dream...?
鈴「うん。ちょっと話がずれちゃうけど、いいかな？」
Suzu: Yes. This is going to be a little bit off topic, but is that alright?
加奈は小さくうなずき、それを確認した鈴さんは話を続ける。
Kana gives a slight nod, and upon confirming that Suzu continues the explanation.
鈴「人間の命にはひとりひとり特性があってね。誰にでも産まれた時から決まっている、魂に刻まれた“約束”があるんだ」
Suzu: Every human life has a special attribute. Everyone with no exception determined from the moment they are born have a "promise" etched in to their souls.
加奈「約束、ですか？」
Kana: A promise?
鈴「そう。その約束を、この人生の中で果たしていきます、そうして僕は私は必ず幸せになりますと決意して、みんなこの世に生まれて来るんだ」
Suzu: Yes. The reason people are born in to this universe is to move to fulfill this promise during our life, with the belief that they will definitely obtain happiness.
鈴「どんなに冷酷非常な極悪人だったとしても、もともとはそう言うものなんだよ」
Suzu: No matter how much of a cold hearted scoundrel they are, that is the root of their existence.
鈴「人間の命は誰しも平等に――与えられるものが多かれ少なかれ――幸せになるために、そうして廻り会うより多くの誰かを幸せにするために、この世に産まれて来る」
Suzu: The worth of a human life is equal no matter who they are――the things they are granted are more or less in order to achieve happiness, as well as in order to make an even larger amount of other people happy as they run in to them in their lives. That is why people are born in to this universe.
鈴「……だからその“神様の場所”は、この世に産まれる命が“魂の約束”を果たせるようにと願いを掛けるんだ。心の中に特別な力を持たせてね」
Suzu: "God's Domain" wants the lives that are born in to this universe to be able to fulfill their "Soul's Promise". That's why a special power was put inside the heart.
鈴「人の心は特別だから。願えば何でも叶うんだ。神様が誰しも平等にその力を与えてくれてる。多くの人はその力に気づけない、いいや、気づこうともしないままだけど」
Suzu: People's hearts are special. Anything asked can be granted. God grants that power to everyone equally. Most people are are unable to notice that power, or actually no. Most people have just not tried to notice it.
加奈「……どうして」
Kana:.....why.
鈴「うん？」
Suzu: Hmm?
加奈「どうしてそんなに、その“神様の世界”は、私たち人間を手厚く扱ってくれるんですか？」
Kana: Why does that.... that "World of God", treat us humans so warmly?
加奈「そうすることで、その場所に何か利益があるのでしょうか。私にはどうしてもそこのところが理解が出来ません」
Kana: In doing so, does that place gain anything of value? I simply can't understand that part no matter how I try to think about it.
加奈「特に改まったお礼も感謝も、ありがとうの言葉も何も口にしない私たちなのに。辛い時は助けられて当然とさえ無意識の領域のどこかでは思っているような私たちなのに」
Kana: Even though we don't offer thanks or gratitude, nor do we even say words of thanks. Even though we're an existance that somewhere in our unconsciousness takes being saved from painful and difficult situations for granted.
加奈「……お礼を口にする正しい相手さえも知ろうともしない、私たちなのに」
Kana: .....Even though we don't even try to seek the right person we should thank.
加奈「そんな私たちをそうまでして宝物のような扱いをする必要性と利益が、どこかにあるのでしょうか」
Kana: Is there any value or need anywhere to be found in treating us humans like treasures.
鈴「それについては非常に簡単だ」
Suzu: The answer to that is extremely simple.
加奈「簡単？」
Kana: Simple?
鈴「“神様の場所”は人間のことが大好きなんだ」
Suzu: "God's Domain" loves humans.
鈴「この動機さえあれば十分、それだけで利益に繋がる。“個人的な利己意識が満たされる”。そういった利益に」
Suzu: That's all the motivation needed, as long as that exists, there is value. "In order to satisfy one's person self interest". That is the value involved.
鈴「……自分が好きな者には無条件に甘やかしてやりたくなるだろ？」
Suzu: ......You feel the longing to unconditionally spoil the things you yourself love don't you?
加奈「……　」
Kana: ......
鈴「とにかく、そのようにして一冊に纏められた魂の本は、最果てにある古書店の書架に納められ、次に生まれ変われるまで静かに順番を待つ。心に……」
Suzu: In any case, like that, a book compiled out of a soul is placed on the shelf of the Antique Bookstore at the Farthest Ends, waiting it's turn quietly until it's reincarnated. In the heart......
加奈「……心？」
Kana: .....The heart?
鈴「そう。心の中に秘めた、“魂の約束”を果たす力を使える日を夢見てね――」
Suzu: Right. The usable power to fulfill the "Soul's Promise" hidden in the heart, as they watch a dream of the day they are able to use it.
鈴「――とまあ、だいぶ話がずれたけれど、ともかくそのようにして輪のように命は廻るんだ。ぐるぐるぐるぐる、ぐるぐると」
Suzu: ――And well, the conversations strayed quite a bit away by now but, this is way lives basically revolve, like in a circle. Around and around, and around and around once again.
鈴さんは言いながら両手の人差し指を空中でくるくる回した。
While speaking, Suzu revolved her index finger around and around like a circle in the air.
鈴「それがこの世界のルールというか原則というか。ともかく、それが決まりなんだ」
Suzu: This is something you could call the world's rule or principle or something. In any case, this is point I'm trying to get to.
鈴「この世に生まれた人間の命なら、誰しもその束縛から解放されることはない」
Suzu: The lives of all the people born in to this world, none of them have been set free from these shackles.
加奈「本屋。最果ての古書店。死んだ人間は本になる。夢を叶えるための、力……」
Kana: Bookstore. The Farthest Ends Antique Bookstore. People turn in to books when they day. A power in order to fulfill a dream......
加奈は少し考え込むようにして、
Kana is lost in thought for a little bit.
加奈「なるほどそうなんですか……と素直にうなずいてしまうには、にわかには信じがたい話ですね」
Kana: I would like to nod and say "I see so is that how it is".... but this story is a little too abrupt and far fetched to honestly accept so readily.
鈴「まあ、普通はそうだよね。それがまともな反応だと思うよ」
Suzu: Well, that's probably normal isn't it. I think that's the proper reaction to have.
加奈「…………」
Kana: ......
更にほんの少しの間だけ深慮の沈黙を挟んだ加奈は、ゆっくりと口を開いて鈴さんに言葉を向ける。
After another moment of silent contemplation, Kana slowly opens her mouth and addresses Suzu.
加奈「とりあえず、まずは今のお話を全て本当だと飲み込んだとして」
Kana: For now, if one first acts on the assumption that everything said so far is true....
加奈「……その“神様の世界”の本屋さんと、今日のあの子と、どういう関係があるんですか？」
Kana: This "World of God"'s bookkeeper, and the girl I saw today, what's the connection between them?
鈴「ああ……」
Suzu: Ah.....
鈴「それはね……」
Suzu: Well you see.....
言い難そうに鈴さんが顔をしかめると、
Upon Suzu-san frowning as if having difficulty phrasing it,
時雨「そこからが本題なんだ」
Shizure: That's where the main issue we're discussing here begins.
助け舟を出すようにして今度は時雨さんが言葉を繋ぐ。
As if putting out a lifeboat, this time Shizure picks up the conversation.
時雨「この世のどこかにあると言うその本屋の力が、どうやら異常をきたしたみたいなんだ」
Shizure: The power of this bookstore which is supposed to exist somewhere in this universe, seems to be experiencing some abnormalities.
加奈「え？異常、ですか？」
Kana: eh? Abnormalities?
時雨「そう。どうしてだかその本屋が、まだ死ぬべきではない、この世に生きる人間たちの命を乱獲し始めた。次から次へと」
Shizure: Yes. For some reason that bookstore has begun overfishing, and taking the lives of people living in this universe before their time. One after another.
時雨「理由はわからない。その発端もわからない」
Shizure: The reason is unkown. The cause that started it is also unknown.
時雨「人間のことが大好きだったはずの“神様の世界”は、理由もなく今を生きる人間たちの命を次々と奪い始めたんだ」
Shizure: The "World of God" which is supposed to love humans, for no reason, has begun snatchin away the lives of humans one after another for no reason.
加奈「どうして、そんなことが？」
Kana: Why, is it doing that?
時雨「さあ。どうしてだろうね。人間が大嫌いになったのかな。争いばかりを繰りかえす強欲なヤツらに愛想を尽かしたのかな。それはわからないんだ」
Shizure: Who knows. That's a really good question. Has it come to hate humans? Has it's love for humanity been exhausted by the avaricic people who continue to cause conflict? We don't know.
時雨「なにせ相手は僕たちと同じような自律的な思考回路を持つ意思的な存在じゃない、と思われるから。だから……」
Shizure: In any case, the thing we're dealing with is believed to be an existance that is not like us or other Autonomous beings.
時雨「……だから、“おいどうしたんだ？どこか調子でも悪いのか？”という具合にして訳を問いただす事もできない」
Shizure: Which is why we're unable to use methods such as asking it "Hey, what's wrong? Is there a problem somewhere?".
時雨「ともかく、“神様の世界”は人間たちの命を無差別に乱獲し始めた。その事実だけが確かなものとしてある」
Shizure: In any case, "God's Domain" has begun indiscriminately overfishing the lives of humans. That's the only thing we've confirmed to be true.
時雨「その自然災害のようなものから逃がしてあげるのが、僕たち三人の仕事なんだ」
Shizure: The job of the three of us is to offer an escape from this thing that's similar to a natural disaster.
鈴「……風」
Suzu: ....Wind.
加奈「え？」
Kana: Eh?
加奈「風、ですか？」
Kana: Wind?
鈴「そう。風だよ。空から降ってくる真っ白な羽根。最果てからそれを運んでくる肌を刺すような、冷たい風」
Suzu: Yes. Wind. Pure white feathers from fall from the sky. Brought from the Farthest Ends　by a wind that seems cold enough to pierce the skin.
鈴「それが合図だ」
Suzu: That is the signal.
鈴「最果ての古書店に目を付けられた命が、そのふたつに捕まってしまえば、それで最期。今日の“あの子”のように身体ごとその命を浚われていってしまう」
Suzu: If the life that the "Farthest Ends Antique Bookstore" has it's eye on is caught by those two things, that's the end. They will like the girl from today have their body and life swept away.
加奈「…………」
Kana: ......
鈴「でもね、本来、そういった現象は異世界の中ではそれほど珍しいものでもなかったんだ」
Suzu: However you know, in the beginning, this kind of a phenomenon wasn't such a rare thing in the parallel universes.
加奈「……え？」
Kana: .....eh?
鈴「“神様の世界”がその力を暴走させる前から、定期的にそう言った現象は起こっていたんだ」
Suzu: Before this power of "God's Domain" went out of control, a phenomenon like this would occur in fixed time intervals.
鈴「それはまるで真夏の台風のように恒例のものだと言うか、風物詩のようなものだった」
Suzu: It was like an established custom similar to Midsummer Typhoons, or a poem about the seasons.
加奈「風物詩？どういうことですか？」
Kana: A poem about the seasons? What in the world do you mean?
加奈「誰かの命が浚われていってしまうのが詩的なモノだと言う事なんですか？」
Kana: Are you saying that someone's life being swept away is something that's poetic?
鈴「……言ったろう。“神様の世界”は人間のことが大好きなんだ」
Suzu: ....Remember what I said? "The World of God" loves humans.
鈴「だからけして人を孤独にはさせない。その命がこの世に生まれてくる前に決めるんだ、家族や恋人、友達といった近しい人を必ず傍に幾人かは置いておく筈なんだ」
Suzu: Which means that by no means will it allow humans to be isolated and alone. Before one's life is even born in to the universe, God makes sure to prepare intimate people to place by one's side such as family, lovers, and friends.
鈴「だけど時々ちょっとした手違いで天涯孤独となってしまった人間を見つけると、自分の場所に呼び寄せてその本屋で暮らさせたりもする」
Suzu: However occasionally a mistake is made, and upon finding a person whose left all alone with no relations, he invites that person to his own domain and have them live in that bookstore.
鈴「本来、あの風もあの羽根も、その前触れを知らせるための合図だったんだ」
Suzu: Originally, that wind and those feathers, were a signal heralding that.
鈴「寂しい誰かの孤独を消し去るためのね」
Suzu: God's method of elimating someone's loneliness.
加奈「それは……寂しい人を神様の世界が自分の住処に招待して、そして一緒に暮らすということですか？」
Kana: So you mean..... that the "World of God" invites lonely people to his own dwelling, so they can live together there?
鈴「まあ簡単に言ってしまえばそう言うことになるのかな」
Suzu: Well, to put it simply, yes.
加奈「…………」
Kana: .......
鈴「でもなぜだろう。今、そうした現象が無差別に起きてる。神様の世界、最果ての古書店が連れ去る相手は孤独でもひとりきりでも何でもない、幸せな者たちばかりとなった」
Suzu: However for some reason. Right now, this phenomenon is occuring indiscriminately. "World of God", the "Farthest Ends Antique Bookstore" is taking away people who aren't isolated or alone at all, it's begun taking away people who are happy.
悠馬「…………」
Yuuma: .......
鈴「ともかく、凶暴化した人間の命を連れ去る最果てからの風が、目を付けた人の命の光を、じわりじわりと、連れ去っていくんだ」
Suzu: In any case, the human life-taking wind from the Farthest Ends has turned violent, and has been taking away the light and lives of the people it has its eyes on.
鈴「目を付けられた命はどこまでもどこまでもその風に追われることになる」
Suzu: The lives who catch the attention of that wind will be chased by that wind no matter where they go.
鈴「走るのを止めた時、その風に追いつかれてしまった時が、最後だ」
Suzu: The moment one stops running, the moment the wind catches them, is their final moment.
鈴「……その命は身体ごと、最果てへと持っていかれてしまう」
Suzu: .....That life and body, is taken away to the Farthest Ends.
鈴「だから、そんな異常事態に目を付けられた人間を自由にするために、私たちは働いている」
Suzu: The reason we are working is to liberate the people who catch the attention of that wind under strange circumstances.
鈴「いつか神様の世界、最果ての古書店に辿り着き、その異常を正す日までね」
Suzu: And we will likely continue working until the day we finally arrive at the "World of God", the "Farthest Ends Antique Bookstore", or until the abnormality is resolved.
加奈「その世界の場所はわかってはいないんですか？」
Kana: Do we not know where that world is?
鈴「今のところは」
Suzu: Not yet.
鈴「三人で力を合わせて探してはいるけれど、この世には本当にたくさんの世界があるから。何千何万では済まないくらい、たくさんね」
Suzu: The three of us are doing our best to find it however, there really are a lot of worlds in this universe, exceeding the thousands and even ten thousands.
加奈「……なんだか気の遠くなる作業ですね、それは」
Kana: ....Just thinking about searching for it makes me feel a bit light headed.
鈴「そうだね。ひとりの力では到底成し遂げる事の出来ないお仕事だ」
Suzu: I know what you mean. It's not something that would be possible to do alone.
鈴「だからこうして、三人が力を合わせて戦ってるんだよ、私たちは」
Suzu: That's why the three of us are combining our strengths and fighting together.
加奈「三人で……」
Kana: The three of you.......
加奈は沈黙し、俺たちの顔を順繰りに見る。
Kana falls in to silence, and looks at each of our faces in sequence.
鈴「ここで少しだけお話を整理しようか」
Suzu: How about we organize what we've been talking about for a bit.
鈴「――まず管理人のこいつが、こいつ自身に備わっている特別な力を使い」
Suzu: We start by having the manager use the special power that he posseses.
鈴「そして無数に存在する異世界の中から例のバグ状態にある最果ての古書店に目を付けられ、今まさに命を浚われようとしている人間を探し出す」
Suzu: And then from the infinitely many worlds find one that's currently in the "bugged state" that we mentioned earlier, and search for a person whose life is just about to be swept away.
鈴「そうして見つけ出したその人間が、まだ死にたくない自由になりたいと私たちに願うのならば、私と悠くんが依頼者をあの風の手が届かない場所まで逃がすんだ」
Suzu: After that, if the person we find doesn't want to die yet and asks us to liberate them, then Yuuma and I help the client escape to a place out of the grasp of the wind.
鈴「逃がし屋の私たちが旅の隘路をかいくぐり、この寮内にまでね」
Suzu: We, the smugglers, slip through narrow passages until we reach the interior of the dormitory.
加奈「依頼者、ですか？」
Kana: Clients?
鈴「世の中には喜んで最果てに命を差し出す者たちもいるからね。誰しもみんな死にたくないと願う人ばかりじゃないんだ。悲しいことだけど」
Suzu: There are people in the universe who gladly offer up their lives to the Farthest Ends. Not everyone asks us to save them. Although it's rather sad topic.
加奈「と言いますと？」
Kana: What do you mean by that?
鈴「各世界によっては最果ての古書店に目を付けられた命が、自らその命を差し出さなければ、その世界は跡形もなく消滅してしまうと信じられている」
Suzu: Because people believe that when the "World's End Antique Bookstore" has it's eye on a person's life, and that person doesn't offer up their own life, then the world they are attached to is erased without a trace.
加奈「そんな」
Kana: That's.....
鈴「たったひとりの犠牲を立てるだけで、その世界はこれまでと変わらず連綿と平和を享受していくことができる。何千何万と言う命が救われる」
Suzu: Having oneself act as the only victim and allowing their world to continue uninterrupted in peace, as well as having lives in the thousands and ten thousands being saved.
加奈「…………」
Kana: ......
僅かな沈黙が降りた。
A small silence descended.
まるで降り積もる雪が山中の音という音を蝕んでいくように。
It was just like how as snow falls and piles up all the sound in the mountains is gnawed up.
加奈「……管理人さんが」
Kana: ......Manager is
時雨「ん？」
Shizure: Hmm?
加奈「管理人さんが依頼者さんを見つけ出すことが出来るとは、どう言うことですか？特別な力？」
Kana: "Manager is able to find clients", what exactly do you guys mean by that? A special power?
加奈「神様の世界の本屋さんに目を付けられた人を、管理人さんが探してくるという事なんですか？」
Kana: Does it mean that Manager goes searching for people that have been targeted by the "Bookkeeper of God's Domain"?
時雨「あー……。それは惜しいな。遠からずも近からずといった具合だ」
Shizure: Ah..... Almost, but not quite. That's not that far off, but neither is it close.
時雨さんは苦笑いをし、袖元から一本の煙管を取り出すと、それを口にくわえた。
With a wry smile, Shizure takes out a smoking pipe from his sleeve, and holds it in his mouth.
時雨「ちょっとした告白をするとね、僕には産まれ付きとある面白い力が備わっているんだ」
Shizure: I guess I have a little confession to make. I possess a certain "interesting" power that I've had since birth.
加奈「え？面白い、ですか？」
Kana: Huh? "Interesting"?
時雨「そう。もうここまで来ると突飛な話には慣れちゃってるかもしれないけれど……」
Shizure: That's right. At this point, you may already be used to crazy stories however.....
そう言いながら、時雨さんは取り出した煙管に葉を詰めマッチをすって火を灯す。
While saying that, Shizure stuffs a leaf in to the pipe, and lights a match on fire.
一連の動作を慣れた手つきで素早く済ませ、深呼吸――をしようとしたところで、
Quickly finishing the familiar series of hand actions, upon Shizure about to take a deep breath,
加奈「……え？」
Kana: ....eh?
宵の口も過ぎ薄暗くなり始めていた室内を、何処からともなくやってきた一片のそれは、淡く柔らかな光で包んだ。
In the room that had begun to grow dark as evening passed, from somewhere(or maybe it was always there) a petal wrapped in soft light appeared.
加奈「これ、は……」
Kana: This is.....
時雨「――ああ、噂をすればというヤツなのかな」
Shizure: ――Ah, I guess this is what you call "speak of the devil".
そう言い差し出した時雨さんの指先を宿り木に、それは羽音もなく舞い降りた。
Saying that, the thing alights on Shizure's finger soundlessly, using it as a perching log.
それは胡蝶だ。
The "thing" was a butterfly.
オレンジ色の満月の光を台紙にして、繊細な手つきと柔らかな造形美とで切り絵を施したような、どこか危うい儚さを孕んだ光の蝶。
An unstable ephemeral seeming butterfly that looked like it was created with delicate fingers and soft moulding with the orange color light of the full moon as the mould.
光の羽をはためかせる度、煌びやかな燐粉が舞い――
Each time the wings of light flutter, a resplendent phosphorous powder dances is left in the air.
白熱灯のように瞳に優しいその光は、見る者にどこか不思議な安心感を与えてくれる。
The light which was kind to the eyes and seemed like that of an incandescant lamp bestowed a mysterious sense of security upon the people who look upon it.
加奈「…………」
Kana: ......
悠馬「加奈？」
Yuuma: Kana?
それなのに、どうしたのだろう。
However despite that, I wonder why?
どこか加奈の顔色がすぐれないような気が……。
I feel for some reason that Kana's face looks a little pale.....
悠馬「どうした？大丈夫なのか？」
Yuuma: What wrong? Are you okay?
加奈「管理人さん」
Kana: Manager.
加奈「……それは、なんですか？」
Kana: That... what is that?
加奈「危険なものでは、ないのですか？」
Kana: Is it not something dangerous?
加奈「そうして触れていても、大丈夫なものなのですか……？」
Kana: Is it really okay to touch something like that?
時雨「危険？いいや、そんなことはないよ」
Shizure: Dangerous? No, it's not dangerous.
時雨「これは僕の家に代々伝わる術式で、名称を“胡蝶の式”と言う」
Shizure: This is a technique passed down throughout the generations in my family, called the "Butterfly Rite".
時雨「この“式”を使役し、僕がやれることは“失くした物を探し出す”と言うことだ」
Shizure: Using this "rite", I am able to find "find" things that "are lost".
そう言いながら時雨さんは袖元から分厚い帳簿を取り出し、それを開いた。白紙のページだ。
While saying that, Shizure took out a large ledger book from his sleeve, and opened it on a blank page.
そして指先にとまった光の蝶に向け、
And then facing the Light Butterfly that was lodging on his fingertip,
時雨「おかえり。おつとめご苦労だったね――」
Shizure: Return. You've done well.
とそう言って、細く短い吐息を吹き付けた。
And upon saying that, let out a small breath.
すると――。
Upon that――
加奈「あ……」
Kana: Ah.....
光の胡蝶はしゅるしゅると音をたて、その形を崩してゆき……時雨さんが片手に開いた帳簿の中へとその姿を消した。
The Light Butterfly made a whizzing sound, and then it's figure collapsed and dissapeared in to the ledger book Shizure was holding in one hand.
すると、さっきまでは白紙だった帳簿のページに墨の文字が躍っている。
Upon that, the page that was blank earlier suddenly had ink letters jump on to the page.
まるで書道の達人がしたためた様な筆記で。
It was like the notes of an expert calligrapher.
時雨「……なるほど。そうか」
Shizure: .....I see. So that's how it is.
その紙面に綴られた墨の文字をさらりと読むと、時雨さんは得心顔でうなずいた。
Upon glancing through the characters spelled on the paper, Shizure nodded in understanding.
時雨「やはりと言うか何と言うか。……まあ、わかりきった結果ではあったかな」
Shizure: I don't know whether I should just not be surprised at this point.... Well, it was an expectable outcome I guess.
鈴「で？どうだった？私の本はどこにあるって？」
Suzu: So? How about it? Where is my book at?
