  1. Y'know, if I'm going to have an account for writing stuff, I might as well actually talk about #writing on here, right?
  2.
  3. So why don't I go into why I'm into writing magical girl stories? #AmWritingFantasy #MagicalGirl

  15. In general, I enjoy positivity in fiction. Happy endings for those who deserve it. Justice upon those who've done terrible things. And whatever appropriate for the folks in the middle. It's not to say that I don't like *any* dark stuff, but dark can easily go too far.

  20. And a lot of dark stuff runs on female disempowerment. I'm not saying that *all* such media is made from a sexist standpoint—many depict it as a terrible part of a terrible world. But it's honestly boring to me to have that used as a lazy shorthand for "this setting sucks".

  25. I've always written female protagonists, but I've never used sexism as part of the story. Because I just want to write fun, positive stuff where girls can be awesome without any sort of baggage. They can grow, overcome obstacles and flaws through development or with others' help.

  30. And I'm a feminine lady. I like pink. I wear skirts. I believe feminism is about respecting women whether they wear skirts or pants. I know there's the "impractical outfits" angle, but I like it when a female character can be strong, active, and still dress in a feminine style.

  35. (Also, the whole "impractical outfits" angle covers a lot of stuff other than dresses that most folks don't really think about, but that's not why we're here, is it? :3)

  40. So I've always liked media where feminine girls and women can be just as badass as the guys or the more tomboy-ish girls. And hence, I liked Sailor Moon, Mew Mew Power, Winx Club, and the like. I could never catch all the episodes to follow them, but I enjoyed what I saw.

  45. But funnily enough, I was never super-into magical girl stuff.
  46.
  47. Until 2017, when I decided to write a magical girl story. Because the aesthetic and style appealed to me, and I was at a point where I felt I should write what I wanted to write—or else what was the point of writing?

  52. And it was writing Papillon, going through the drafts, that I truly realized the magic of magical girls.
  53.
  54. Sure, they're kick-butt heroines with pretty outfits.
  55.
  56. But it's the emotional aspect as well. The character-driven aspect. The optimism and hope.

  61. It's a genre that (always has) emphasized that, beneath the heroic personas, the protagonists are just "ordinary" girls. With ordinary lives, ordinary hopes, ordinary friendships on top of the burden of saving the world.
  62.
  63. And the genre almost always says, "you can do it".

  68. It's a genre where its female protagonists *can* be strong enough to fight evil, *can* overcome the hardships of their duty, *can* find love and friendship and happiness through it all, and *can* fulfill their hopes and dreams.

  73. So that's why I've become so into writing magical girl stuff: Because I want stories where you have the strong heroines kicking butt, but also have that deeper character element that's just as important as the fighting, all tied together in a bow of optimism and empowerment. :3
