Hanako Bakes a Cake

Hanako enters her room juggling the handle of the door and a baking tray full of cupcakes. She manages it without incident, save for a slight misstep as she uses her hip to close the door.  A sigh of relief and satisfaction escape her lips as all the treats survive the event without displacement.  After holding the tray with one hand and turning the lock with the other, she turns to the room.

"Who wants cupcakes?" Hanako beams.

The three guests are all silent, shooting nervous glances to each other.  Hanako doesn't seem to feel the tension in the air, instead happily placing a cupcake in front of each one of them.  Lilly is the first to break the silence by clearing her throat.  It causes Hanako to curiously look towards her blind best friend.

“Is something wrong, Lilly?”  Hanako asks, still oblivious to the ominous aura permeating the room.

"Hanako, there's no easy way to say this ... this is an intervention."  Lilly showing visible pains on her face saying it.

Hanako stops dead in her tracks, "W-what do you mean, Lilly?"

Shizune picks up the standstill between Hanako and Lilly and starts to slice her hands through the air with speed and precision but her translator is pre-occupied.

"OH GOD, YOU GUYS, THESE CAKES ARE DELICIOUS~!"  Misha screams.

After a glare from Shizune, Misha puts down her half eaten cupcake, and translates with frosting still visible on her lips.

"[We're all worried about you Hanachan. You haven't been to classes since ...]"

Shizune and Misha stop there and both glance over to Lilly, opting to let her handle the landmine.

Lilly picks up the cue, and continues, "Since your breakup with Hisao, Hanako."

Silence again. Aside from the chomping of another cupcake from Misha.

"THESE ARE GREAT, HANAKO~!" she attempted a whisper.

"I-I'm fine, you guys," Hanako fights the tears in her eyes, "D-don't worry about me." Her hands are balled up and red.

Shizune continues where Lilly left off, Misha quickly tries to voice Shizune's signs with a mouthful of cupcake, "[Hanachan, we know you're not sleeping. You're not eating. You're spending all night cooking in the dorm kitchen. You weigh almost nothing.]"

Hanako doesn't answer, instead dropping her face and letting her bangs hide her face.


Yet another awkward silence envelope the dorm room.

Despite not being able to hear, Shizune can see Hanako's erratic breathing from the quick pulsing of her chest.

Lilly puts a hand on Hanako's shoulder and gives a comforting squeeze.  She flinches when Hanako uncharacteristically shrugs it away.  Hanako lowers her head even further as if willing herself to disappear.  Lilly refuses to let her best friend suffer alone and attempts to pull her into a hug.  Once again, Hanako rejects it with a quick push away.

Lilly is tearing up, Shizune is nervous, and Misha eats another cupcake.  A drop of tear drops to the carpet from behind Hanako's hidden face.   And another and another.  Shizune walks around the low table at the center of the room and forcibly forces Hanako into her embrace.  When Hanako lost the strength (or perhaps, the will) to fight her off, Shizune reaches for Lilly and guides her cousin into hugging Hanako from the other side.  The two girls held Hanako until she erupted into unrestrained sobbing.

“It's okay, Hanako,” Lilly whispers.  Shizune, unable to audible comfort Hanako, rubs her back.  Misha joins in and embraces Hanako from behind, and the four girls stay in the quad-hug for a while.  Eventually, Hanako's cries quiets down to a soft sob.

Eventually, after the maelstrom of the emotions were spent, the other girls slowly let go of Hanako one by one.

Hanako wipes away the remnants of the tears on her face and thanks the girls.

“There's no need for thanks, Hanako, we just want you to be better,” Lilly assures.

“AND NOW LET'S GET BACK TO ENJOYING THE DELICIOUS CUPCAKES~!” Misha declares.

They all agree, and a sly smile creeps on Hanako's face.

Misha hands Lilly one to let her taste Hanako's treats.

“This does taste wonderful, Hanako, what did you put in it?” Lilly asks.

“YEAH, HANACHAN, WHAT'S YOUR SECRET?”  Misha wonders.  Shizune nods to alert Hanako she is curious as well.

“Well,” Hanako lowers her head to hide her blush, “it's...”

Lilly and Misha leans in closer, ever so curious.  Shizune taps Misha's shoulder to signal she would also want to know.

With their full attention, Hanako raises her head and with a smile, calmly and slowly mouths the word so that even Shizune know without Misha's translation.

“Hi-sa-o,” and facing Hanako are three very stunned faces.  She takes her own cupcake and splits it open, an unmistakable index finger that unmistakably belongs to a teenage boy.

Shizune frozen in place by shock and Misha dashed for the door.  "It's locked, Waaa~, it's locked!" Misha screamed. She looks back and sees a knife buried in Shizunes chest.  Misha is scared white and cowers into the corner.

"What's going on?" Lilly says, confused by all the commotion.

"Oh, Lilly," Hanako says with a devilish smile, "you have to try my pie. I really put myself into it." She lifts her skirt and reveal a chunk of thigh clumsily bandaged, still fresh, bright red blood soaking it.

Misha could only manage a whimper at the sight.
