  1. Your eyes begin to unfocus as your mind wanders, waiting for Asriel to get his harness and quickdraws set up. The cold autumn breeze cuts through your jacket. You probably should have dressed a bit warmer, but Azzy had said that you'll warm up during the actual climb. You weren't quite sure what it was that he wanted to show you nor why he was so insistent about it, but if it was important to him then it was important to you. Your relationship with mountains hasn't exactly been the greatest, given your past with Mt. Ebott, but time spent with Asriel is time well spent.
  2.
  3. "Almost ready!" Asriel says as he finishes flaking the rope. "Trust me, you're gonna love this."
  4.
  5. "Are you sure you're OK with me belaying?" You say, nervously thumbing over your ATC. You've climbed with Azzy in the gym a few times but never outside before.
  6.
  7. Asriel looks over at you and offers a reassuring smile. "You'll be fine, after all, I taught you" he says jokingly before walking up and taking your hands and holding them in about hip height. "Show me how you would move your hands to give off rope"
  8.
  9. You can feel blood rushing your face from Azzy's embrace, your brain taking a moment to process his request. "Like this, right?"
  10.
  11. "Exactly! Now show me how to catch a fall."
  12.
  13. You exaggerate your motions a bit, gripping onto the bottom strand of your imaginary rope and leaning back, letting Asriel support most of your weight with his hand holding.
  14.
  15. "See? I told you, you're a natural" He says hoisting you back upright and into a light hug. "Now come on, we've got a mountain to climb"
  16.
  17. With renewed confidence and finally some added warmth from the goat's embrace, you were feeling much more prepared to make the ascent. With the help of Azzy, you got the rope attached to your harness and set up ready to go. You couldn't help but admire how gracefully he was able to move up the rocks. He is a goat afterall, but seeing him on those rocks is like poetry in motion.
  18.
  19. And of course getting such a robust view of his behind wasn't so bad either...
  20.
  21. Not long passed before Asriel was past your sight and onto one of the ledges further along the rockface. It wasn't too long of a climb, only around 40 feet or so, but it was still intimidating to someone like you, who had never climbed anything but some plastic holds in the gym after class.
  22.
  23. "Alright, I've got the anchor set up! Off belay!" Asriel shouted down at you from beyond the ledge.
  24.
  25. You fiddled with the rope and ATC for, admittedly, far too long. Eventually you had gotten everything set up for you to climb now, swapping roles with Asriel. Only he wouldn't get nearly as good of a view as you had.
  26.
  27. "Ready!" You shouted up at him, feeling nervous about embarrassing yourself by taking too long to up to him.
  28.
  29. "On belay, you've got this!" Asriel yelled down at you in his most confident, reassuring voice.
  30.
  31. You start making your way up the route, following the chalky map your boyfriend had left behind. The rocks were jagged and cold to the touch, far different from the warm, sand papery holds from the gym. Your ascent was... less graceful, to put it lightly. 'Falling upwards' might be an accurate way to describe it, but Asriel was with you the whole way, guiding you through the cruxes and giving you the encouragement you needed.
  32.
  33. Flopping your way over the edge, you roll over onto your back and thrust your now jello-like arms into the air in a gesture of victory. Asriel chuckled at your dorky gesture as he pulled you a bit further way from the edge.
  34.
  35. "See? I knew you wouldn't let me die" Asriel teased as he sat himself down next to you.
  36.
  37. "God don't even joke about that" You say, looking up at your boyfriend. "What was so special about this climb anyways?"
  38.
  39. Asriel gestured up off into the distance and your eyes followed. Just behind you, that entire time, was one of the most beautiful sights you've ever seen. The oaks and evergreens served as the perfect framing for the valley below. Houses off in the distance, only looking like specs to the two of you from so high up. The surrounding hills and mountains jutting out to either side, serving as the stoic guardians of your little suburb. And, oh god, the sunset. Vivid shades of oranges and purple streak across the sky, painting a beautiful canvas.
  40.
  41. You're speechless, your mind completely absorbed in the natural beauty before you. The only thing you notice outside is Azzy's hand draping across your shoulder and pulling you close to him, resting his head on top of yours.
  42.
  43. END
