- Part I
- 1. Pseudolistening - When the receiver is acting as if they are listening when they are actually focused away from the speaker.
- 2. Stage-hogging - When the receiver is less concerned about what the speaker has to say and more concerned about making their own point.
- 3. Selective listening - When the receiver responds only to information that interests them.
- 4. Insulated listening - When the receiver specifically avoids a topic that comes up in a conversation by ignoring it.
- 5. Defensive listening - When the receiver takes something said by the speaker personally as an attack at them. This is often seen when the receiver does not trust the speaker or there is a power struggle between the two.
- 6. Ambushing - When the receiver listens intently to the speaker, but only to collect information from the speaker.
- 7. Insensitive listening - When the receiver does not recognize the emotional part of a message or tone of what is said, but only responds to the words that are said.
