With the improvements, devices will be able to communicate directly over a longer range and at faster speeds than with current technology.

The range and speed of Bluetooth will continue to increase in coming years as the markets for home automation and IoT grow, said Mark Powell, executive director at standards-setting organization Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

The upcoming Bluetooth protocol—which will be released in the second half this year—will quadruple the wireless range and double the speed of the current technology. Bluetooth-SIG members involved usually develop chips in parallel, but it takes a few months until they start appearing in devices, Powell said.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

It even knows the posts you draft but never publish. Combine all that information with the power of the like button, which signals to Facebook that a post should be shared more widely, and the network should know exactly what to show in your News Feed every day. But it doesn’t—not even close. The Facebook News Feed algorithm can be infuriating. It won’t show me all of my best friend’s posts, which I obviously want to see, but it will surface a photo someone I barely know has liked.

That’s about to change. Facebook knows that it hasn’t perfected the News Feed, so it’s making some tweaks that will take more than just likes, comments, and shares into account when showing you News Feed stories.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

The collaboration and sharing tools are instantly deployed wirelessly and that has helped save time and money, said Steve Sciarappo, vice president at Intel's information technology group.

That wireless concept will be expanded this year, Sciarappo said. The underlying technology behind wireless conference rooms is Intel's homegrown Unite toolset, with which users can also share room resources like whiteboards and monitors and invite remote participants to meetings. The Unite technology is available on Intel PCs with vPro chips.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

 543.

Channels, an app for watching live television through the new Apple TV, has received a substantial update with timeshifting support.

The app, which first launched in December, works in conjunction with SiliconDust HDHomeRun networked TV tuners. Users plug an antenna into the tuner, then connect the tuner to a Wi-Fi router. This setup allows for streaming live channels to other devices around the house, using companion apps such as Channels for Apple TV.

Channels is the first app for HDHomeRun tuners to support timeshifting without complicated plugins. The app begins storing up video when users first tune into a channel, caching up to 30 minutes of programming. Users can also pause live video for up to 30 minutes. Although the app doesn’t offer full-blown DVR, it’s still useful for rewatching a bit of dialog that you missed, or pausing through the first 15 minutes of a show so you can skip all the commercial breaks.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

The researchers dubbed the new threat Android.Xiny.19.origin.

Malicious Android apps were a common occurrence on Google Play until a few years ago when Google implemented more rigorous checks. This included an automated scanner called Bouncer that used emulation and behavior-based detection.

Bypassing Bouncer detection is not impossible, but is hard enough to keep most malware creators away. Most Android Trojans these days are distributed through third-party app stores, targeting users who have enabled the installation of apps from "unknown sources."

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here

All it requires is a custom submarine capsule designed to go five years at a time without a visit from a technician.

The company’s R&D department recently went public with Project Natick, a data center enclosed in a steel capsule that sits on the ocean floor. These underwater data centers are more easily deployed, reduce emissions, and save a ton of dough on cooling compared to traditional server farms, at least in theory.

Microsoft already completed its first successful mission last year. Between August and November of 2015, the company deployed its first prototype vessel, the Leona Philpot, which was named after a character connected to the Halo series. That first vessel contained one server rack, according to The New York Times, surrounded by pressurized nitrogen to remove heat from the components.

To read this article in full or to leave a comment, please click here
