  1. The beat-up car sped down the deserted highway. Jane's eyes searched the horizon endlessly for the taillights of Strider's car, which had steadily grown smaller in the distance until it disappeared about an hour ago. Both Lalondes dozed quietly, with Rose in the backseat, a book held against her flat chest, moving slightly as she breathed. The older Lalonde's head rested against the front passenger-side window, obviously knocked out from drinking too much. Jade looked out at the featureless landscape. The streetlights caused the sky to be just bright enough to prevent most stars from showing. It was a new sensation for her; the sky above Hellmurder Island at night was full of stars.
  2. It was a long drive, and they attempted to make small talk. Taking her eyes off the road for a second, Jane glanced in the rear view mirror at Jade. "So, do you have any boys you fancy?" she asked.
  3. Jade didn't bother to meet Jane's eyes. "Well, kinda," she said absentmindedly. The clock read 10:25, and Jane was having trouble paying attention to the road.
  4. "Kinda? When I was your age, there was no kinda being into someone. You either were or weren't," Jane said, lording her age over the adolescent. Jade just nodded silently, from what Jane could see in the mirror.
  5. The car shuddered as it moved into the shoulder. Jane quickly swerved the car back into the lane, jolting Rose out of her light slumber. The frail girl looked around, a bit disoriented, before looking at Jane.
  6. "You look tired, you should find a place to sleep for a while," Rose said. Jane had a sneaking suspicion that she was right, but she didn't want to fall further behind the boys, who were probably already at John's house by now.
  7. "Nah, I'm fine," Jane said. A road sign said that the next exit had some hotels and fast food restaurants, as well as the last gas for 60 miles. Jane felt Rose's gaze burn through the back of her seat as the exit came up. It was too much. She pulled off of the highway onto the overpass and drove in front of the motel.
  8. It was a seedy, squat building, with the doors of the rooms facing out over the parking lot. Lalonde woke up, noticing the lack of movement in the car. "Okay, we're going to sleep here tonight," Jane said.
  9. "Why don't we just sleep in the car?" Lalonde asked drowsily.
  10. "I'm sure Jade wants to spend her first night in the States on a bed," Jane replied. Jade nodded. Honestly she didn't care, as anything was better than the cramped conditions she had on the way from the island.
  11. The lobby was straight out of the seventies. The walls and desk were wood paneled, and the mismatched armchairs had seen their best days. Lalonde sunk herself in the one that had the least visible patches and poked at her cell phone while Jade looked over her shoulder. Rose and Jane engaged the receptionist, whose eyes stared at the wall behind them unblinkingly as he mumbled a welcome to the pair. "A double room is $70, we only have smoking rooms," he said with a slight lisp.
  12. "Fine," Jane said, opening her wallet and pulling out a credit card.
  13.
  14. AND THEN THEY ALL GOT RAPED
  15.
  16. IT WAS MAGICAL.
