58. Empowered by the love of a slave (Jang), a royal concubine (Cheung) is given the chance to make an extraordinary decision.
59. An orphaned girl, driven by poverty at such a young age, makes a promise with an enchantress. In return for beauty and the admiration of every man, she will never be with the man she loves. This spell cannot be broken unless the impossible happens: snow falling in spring and the dead coming back to life. Now a grown and beautiful princess, she regrets her promise, for all of the men she's loved has always been met with tragedy. In love again with a man behind a red armor and a golden mask who rescues her from death, she is tormented by their inevitable parting. Meanwhile, Kunlun, the slave of a great general, is searching for the lost memories of a family he once had. Soon the fate of these two intertwine when the princess believes the general to be her hero, thus pulling him into this web of fate. What end will befallen our three characters? Are their fates already sealed by a higher power, or can they still choose a life they want?
60. Well I don't know how to put it exactly, I had a very high expectation on this movie before it came out, mostly because all those excellent ones made by Chen Kaige before. To be frankly, I used to think that he was the no.1 guy in Chinese film production, I can still recall those tear-shedding moments that he gave me through his unique and humane perspectives and works. Nevertheless, I do not know exactly what went wrong with him this time, it turns out this movie is such a joke, there is hardly any fresh ideas, floppy plot, childish lines and totally irrelated actings, not mention the lame KungFu action part and hillbilly costumes...all in all it is more than just a big disappointment, and the last thing you wanna see is the whole Chinese film industry would follow his footsteps backwards. Although as a Chinese it has been very hard for me to criticize Chinese movies, I can not hold what I truly wanna say it is a big failure and setback!
61. Man, this was just terrible...Asian movie makers these days think they can just throw together a cast of famous Asian actors, create some nice costumes and film some pretty scenery and people (especially Westerners) will call it "art" and flock to see it.

Honestly, it was plain awful. The special effects were pretty poor by today's standards (eg buffaloes and architecture). Characters did and said things that would have made little sense in any culture, language or time period in the history of mankind. When everyone in the cinema starts laughing out loud at the scenes that are supposed to be the most moving and touching, you know it must be crap! Asian films don't have to be like this to sell in Western markets. I did think the Japanese actor did a good job of speaking Mandarin. But overall, this was crap in anyone's language.
62. Some critics are badly selling the film short, when the story it tells, measured strictly in terms of emotional power and overall fun, is as moving and pleasurable as any matinee item by Ford, Hawks or Raoul Walsh.
63. In order to create a more appealing version for Western audiences the movie had to be cut - like many other Asian productions. More than 80 differences can be found between both versions and altogether, nearly 20 minutes were left out. This streamlined version loses the depth of the Original cut. 7cb1d79195
