  1. Ashur looks around, and finds a cushion, the object an anchor against a mirror surface of its own
  2. reflection. He moves to it and lowers himself, settling with an arm over a knee, and smiles towards
  3. Dianna again. It appears as if he is being extraordinarily careful of his surroundings and bearings.
  4. "How do you rip apart your own fears here?" he asks the priestess curiously. "What is it you fear?"
  5. [Someone wearing a jarring mirrormask formed of broken shards of stygian] Choosing a cushion of deep
  6. purple silk, the dark cloud of Dianna sits, her poise upright and seeming to gaze into the mirror
  7. ahead.  "That is exactly what I shall ask myself, dear Ash," Dianna replies, her voice calm but
  8. uplifted.  "Look into the the mirror ahead and consider yourself... I will remove my mask, so I may
  9. do it, too."
  10.
  11. The priestess removes her mask and sets it aside, gazing into the amber orbs ahead of her, as she's
  12. done hundreds of times.  "The first step is to relax, greet yourself in the silence of your mind.
  13. There is no one here but you and I - and whatever exists beyond the mirror cannot come forth, for
  14. every surface in this room is washed in holy water.  Focus on what you see... then focus deeper
  15. within, at what you feel.  Do not stop the feelings; let them wash over and through you; let them
  16. exist, acknowledging them like a breeze, like water.  They are as natural to you as every feeling
  17. you generally accept; but - if you do not allow these darker feelings to exist, they grow, gain
  18. strength and become quite demanding to be known.  Best to seek them out, to give them the attention
  19. and affection they wish, now, while they are small and young."
  20.
  21. The priestess' palms rest upon her knees, relaxed and gently-cupped.  She breathes deeply, the soft
  22. inhale-and-exhale audible.  "I see you," she calmly speaks to her reflection.  "Afraid... of what
  23. you do not know.  Afraid to learn, and just as afraid to remain ignorant.  Afraid to interfere with
  24. those who were your family - afraid to let go of them as family, and accept your new home, your new
  25. family."
  26. [Public] Brianna: so how do we read the new super-specific date?
  27. [Public] Valencia is so bored at work today.pose watches Dianna, listening. Then he turns attention on the Ashur in one of the mirrors that is directly across from him, frowning slightly.
  28. Producing a comb from a pouch on his belt, he carefully neatens his hair, and puts the comb away. This is important business, after all. He leans forward, squinting at himself. "I, er... see
  29.  you," he begins, copying the priestess. "Afraid. Of. Er..." He simply stares at his own blank face, regarding whatever emotion might be taking its time to swirl to the surface. Perhaps this
  30.  is more difficult for someone untrained, or he might just be particularly bad at it.

  38. [Dianna] "You know what you're afraid of, Ash - don't be afraid to let it rise to the surface, to
  39. feel it," Dianna quietly murrs without moving her gaze from her own eyes.  "Look... and let it
  40. come."
  41. Dianna prompts quietly, "Are you afraid to be loved...?"
  42. A player you are watching, Arcadia, has disconnected.pose glances quickly to Dianna, and back to his expression. "I am," he confesses. "I fear letting people down. But more than that..." His
  43.  face grows tight, as if he holds something in, but then he lets it out and it warps into a grimace that comes with a shallow gasp. "I don't want to lose... again." The contortion fades away
  44.  as he stabilizes himself, looking downward. "It is easier to live a life without the feelings of others, or my own feelings for them, involved."

  50. [Ashur] Very quietly, Ashur adds, "I'm very selfish, Di."
  51. [Dianna] "Don't judge it, Ash - though you may very well be selfish.  Merely look at it, accept
  52. it... and give it up to Tehom, that he may help you live with it, or take it from you - as you wish.
  53. Either is yours to do - as only /you/ wish, Ash," Dianna soothingly speaks, her gaze remaining upon
  54. her reflection's eyes.  "You're afraid to be loved... and you're afraid to lose again.  ...What are
  55. you afraid to lose...?" the priestess' voice softens further, a whispered murmur in this cavernous
  56. room.emit "Love," murmurs Ashur, the word whispered back still sounding through the acoustics of the mirrored space, coming back colder and emptier. "That's what I'm afraid to lose. It would
  57.  be better never to have it. Some heal easily from these wounds, but perhaps..." He looks up across at the mirrors again, clearly trying to keep a nonjudgmental approach as Dianna has
  58. suggested, features blank as he looks upon his reflection as she does upon hers. "...perhaps in addition to selfishness, I am weaker than most, and a coward, as well."

  65. [Dianna] "And then, let's say that you are, Ashur.  What if you are a coward?  Are you such a coward
  66. that you push her away?  That you refuse to love her?" Dianna asks, her voice smooth and elegant,
  67. calm and without nonjudgmental.

  120. Upon stepping into what is probably the most opulent, yet simple room in this tranquil abode, one
  121. finds oneself helplessly, endlessly faced with their reflection in infinite, repeating patterns on
  122. all but one surface: the polished jet floor.
  123.
  124. Every other dominant surface in the Infinity Suite is sheeted with flawless mirrors, including the
  125. ceiling. The effect is dizzying as the door is closed, for even the back side of the door is
  126. covered by the same, perfect mirrored glass; and, bearing no handle, one becomes simply surrounded
  127. by oneself.
  128.
  129. Thirteen soft cushions wrapped in various shades of iridescent silk are scattered across the jet
  130. floor, which, being polished to a shine, is reflective, as well. Each cushion is embroidered with
  131. a different sigil, connoting each of the thirteen gods of the Pantheon.
  132.
  133. The purpose of this room is obvious, as is the god it represents.
  134.
  135. The theological principle, too, becomes conspicuously clear, the point hammered in the longer one
  136. remains:
  137.
  138. One can never escape oneself, no matter where one may turn. Even if into darkness.
  139.
  140. With no windows, torches or lanterns for lighting, several candles, probably lining the walls, must
  141. be lit, or one will find themselves enveloped in utter darkness.

  157. Tucked amidst the lush trees on Visitor Road is a generous-sized, two-story building with white
  158. stucco facade, accessed by a wide set of white marble stairs. A broad arcade runs atop the stairs,
  159. creating a sense of grandeur to the entrance while providing shelter from inclement weather. The
  160. entry doors are impressive:  A thick layer of patinaed bronze overlays heavy oak double-doors in a
  161. pattern of ornately-embossed squares with scenes from the history of the Pantheon.
  162.
  163. The residence is dotted with windows: on the ground floor, each is protected by wrought iron grates
  164. to bar entrance from the outside. On the second floor, two sets glass-paned double-doors may be
  165. swung open towards the inside to capture fresh breezes or access the small balconies overlooking the
  166. street.
  167.
  168. On each balcony, curved waves of wrought iron surround the platform to keep spectators safe while
  169. twinkling luneria and dahlia flowers brighten the upper edge, flower pots hung from the curled
  170. wrought iron, sweet fragrances caught on the breeze in warmer weather.
  171.
  172. Stepping into the home is easily overwhelming: lush warmth pervades the garden courtyard in any
  173. season. A tall, domed roof of blues, white and crystal-clear glass blossoms high above, allowing
  174. sunlight to shear through in bright shards, allowing more than enough to sunlight even in winter,
  175. assuring that the myriad plants, trees and flowers in this generous courtyard flourish year-round.
  176.
  177. The floor is of a giant mosaic pattern, echoing the roof in cobalt, white and sky blue; a winding
  178. stone staircase commencing on the wall opposite the entrance climbs leftward and up half of the
  179. circumference of this room to a broad landing over the front doors, parapeted by a wrought iron
  180. railing and tiled with the same blues-and-white mosaic.
  181.
  182. A slender, babbling rivulet of water flows through the middle of the courtyard, facilitated by
  183. pushing the cool liquid down a stylized trough carved of spiraled, undulating granite. To the left
  184. of the main entrance and at the far end of the wide courtyard is a sunken pool, fed by this
  185. continuous stream and surrounded by leafy bushes and palms from the Southern climes of the Lyceum,
  186. to which fragrant wild orchids cling. So clear is the water of this well-tended pool that one can
  187. see that the bottom is actually pure-white sand. The continuous splash of the water from the rivulet
  188. creates, throughout this entire space, a calming, relaxing mood. The pool, should one decide they
  189. wish to swim in it, is a perfect coolness without being cold and flanked by natural paving stones.
  190.
  191. Opposite the room, one finds the source of the stream:  A bubbling fountain that pushes water from
  192. somewhere below the mosaic floor.  Beyond the fountain and tucked behind ferns, meandering vines of
  193. wild passionflowers and climbing jasmine is the arched doorway to a pristine bathhouse; across the
  194. room, another arched door leads into the salon.

  312. creating a sense of grandeur to the entrance while providing shelter from inclement weather. The
  313. entry doors are impressive:  A thick layer of patinaed bronze overlays heavy oak double-doors in a
  314. pattern of ornately-embossed squares with scenes from the history of the Pantheon.
  315.
  316. The residence is dotted with windows: on the ground floor, each is protected by wrought iron grates
  317. to bar entrance from the outside. On the second floor, two sets glass-paned double-doors may be
  318. swung open towards the inside to capture fresh breezes or access the small balconies overlooking the
  319. street.
  320.
  321. On each balcony, curved waves of wrought iron surround the platform to keep spectators safe while
  322. twinkling luneria and dahlia flowers brighten the upper edge, flower pots hung from the curled
  323. wrought iron, sweet fragrances caught on the breeze in warmer weather.
  324.
  325. Stepping into the home is easily overwhelming: lush warmth pervades the garden courtyard in any
  326. season. A tall, domed roof of blues, white and crystal-clear glass blossoms high above, allowing
  327. sunlight to shear through in bright shards, allowing more than enough to sunlight even in winter,
  328. assuring that the myriad plants, trees and flowers in this generous courtyard flourish year-round.
  329.
  330. The floor is of a giant mosaic pattern, echoing the roof in cobalt, white and sky blue; a winding
  331. stone staircase commencing on the wall opposite the entrance climbs leftward and up half of the
  332. circumference of this room to a broad landing over the front doors, parapeted by a wrought iron
  333. railing and tiled with the same blues-and-white mosaic.
  334.
  335. A slender, babbling rivulet of water flows through the middle of the courtyard, facilitated by
  336. pushing the cool liquid down a stylized trough carved of spiraled, undulating granite. To the left
  337. of the main entrance and at the far end of the wide courtyard is a sunken pool, fed by this
  338. continuous stream and surrounded by leafy bushes and palms from the Southern climes of the Lyceum,
  339. to which fragrant wild orchids cling. So clear is the water of this well-tended pool that one can
  340. see that the bottom is actually pure-white sand. The continuous splash of the water from the rivulet
  341. creates, throughout this entire space, a calming, relaxing mood. The pool, should one decide they
  342. wish to swim in it, is a perfect coolness without being cold and flanked by natural paving stones.
  343.
  344. Opposite the room, one finds the source of the stream:  A bubbling fountain that pushes water from
  345. somewhere below the mosaic floor.  Beyond the fountain and tucked behind ferns, meandering vines of
  346. wild passionflowers and climbing jasmine is the arched doorway to a pristine bathhouse; across the
  347. room, another arched door leads into the salon.

  397. Upon entry into the bathhouse, one may be surprised at the relatively-
  398. small size of the initial room, tiled with a mosaic display of fish and
  399. sea creatures both real and mythical across the floors, walls, ceiling
  400. and descending staircase.  The western wall is lined with shelves of
  401. plush towels, hooks for personal belongings and two polished granite
  402. benches sculpted in the form of giant octopi, set just to the left of
  403. the arced entrance, through which the lush courtyard can be seen.
  404. Against the eastern wall rest two tall, woven bamboo baskets with lids.
  405. Tall, potted palms and flowers rest along the southern wall. Lighting
  406. the room are several stylized bronze sparkleglass lamps formed in the
  407. shapes of nude men and women with their lower halves formed as fish.
  408.
  409. Descending the mosaic-tiled stairs might be a dangerous task if not
  410. for the verdigris bronze hand-rail splitting the width of the winding
  411. staircase that bends to the left after thirteen steps.  From the broad
  412. landing, one can, at last, witness the spectacle that makes this grotto
  413. so very unique:
  414.
  415. It may be known that the city of Arx sits atop meandering springs of all
  416. temperatures, but to find a sea-green basin such as this, dug naturally
  417. through the limestone and forming a broad cavern is exceedingly rare.
  418. Bronze sparkleglass lanterns in exactly the same half-man/half-fish design
  419. as at the entrance light the otherwise-darkened grotto, shining with
  420. particular brightness at the opposite side of the basin, where a platform
  421. has been carved deeper into the rock, as well as three broad benches.
  422. Steam rises from the crystal-clear water; and to bathe in it leaves ones
  423. skin feeling silky-smooth, the minerals deeply nourishing and relaxing.

  544. Upon stepping into what is probably the most opulent, yet simple room in this tranquil abode, one
  545. finds oneself helplessly, endlessly faced with their reflection in infinite, repeating patterns on
  546. all but one surface: the polished jet floor.
  547.
  548. Every other dominant surface in the Infinity Suite is sheeted with flawless mirrors, including the
  549. ceiling. The effect is dizzying as the door is closed, for even the back side of the door is
  550. covered by the same, perfect mirrored glass; and, bearing no handle, one becomes simply surrounded
  551. by oneself.
  552.
  553. Thirteen soft cushions wrapped in various shades of iridescent silk are scattered across the jet
  554. floor, which, being polished to a shine, is reflective, as well. Each cushion is embroidered with
  555. a different sigil, connoting each of the thirteen gods of the Pantheon.
  556.
  557. The purpose of this room is obvious, as is the god it represents.
  558.
  559. The theological principle, too, becomes conspicuously clear, the point hammered in the longer one
  560. remains:
  561.
  562. One can never escape oneself, no matter where one may turn. Even if into darkness.
  563.

  615. you?" Dianna gently guides her friend, her amber gaze tender and concerned.
  616. (OOC) Dianna says: Dianna is sometimes TOO good. ;)
  617. [Info] Sydney: Theme question I've been too embarrassed to ask, but is overdue. Are there outlying
  618. regions outside of Arx that house people not considered abandoned? Like, compact territories of
  619. woodlands, farms, etc? How far does one need to be outside of Arx to be considered abandoned?
  620. [Info] Leola: They're called the Crownlands
  621. [Info] Sydney: See? Embarrassing.
  622. [Info] Lou: Nah. If you're newish to the game, everyone starts somewhere.
  623. [Info] Peri: I thought the Crownlands refered to the region overseen by Grayson (as opposed to The
  624. Oathlands, The North, etc)
  625. [Info] Corban: Abandoned, which is really not the common term that most Arvani would use, is anyone
  626. outside the Compact on Arvum.
  627. [Info] Sydney: I just had such a visceral first impression that outside Arx = You're abandoned now,
  628. with the whole Elisha thing happening in my formative noob days.
  629. [Info] Ras: When you look at the map of Arvum, all of that is considered the Compact, technically.
  630. There are all those towns and cities where the different houses rule for the sake of the king. Like
  631. somewhere as far as Pearlspire is still not far enough to be considered abandoned. I think that
  632. there are pockets of wilderness where wild tribes still live and those are Abandoned people but the
  633. Compact doesn't consider them 'Abandoned lands' - they still think they technically belong to the
  634. king.
  635. [Info] Lou: The crownlands are the areas that are overseen by Grayson, largely the wild areas within
  636. the Gray Forest and any area a fealty doesn't claim.
  637. [Info] Austen: https://play.arxgame.org/dom/map/
  638. [Info] Corban: Most Arvani would call the Abandoned 'shavs.'
  639. [Info] Lou: There's, however, literally tens of thousands of castles and wild areas that the compact
  640. hasn't reclaimed, that are overtaken by Abandoned.emit In the mirror, Ashur's expression is rendered thoughtful by Dianna's probing, but he seems unconcerned by the question. "No," he muses.
  641.  "Truthfully, I would not be upset if she did. Loneliness is..." He smiles. "Something I have perfected. It is comfortable, and I enjoy it. But being with others brings the threat of
  642. failure." The smile disappears. "I could embarrass her in front of her family, which I have done. I could make her cry without understanding why, which I have done too many times to count. I
  643.  could let her die."
  644. [Ashur] In the mirror, Ashur's expression is rendered thoughtful by Dianna's probing, but he seems
  645. unconcerned by the question. "No," he muses. "Truthfully, I would not be upset if she did.
  646. Loneliness is..." He smiles. "Something I have perfected. It is comfortable, and I enjoy it. But
  647. being with others brings the threat of failure." The smile disappears. "I could embarrass her in
  648. front of her family, which I have done. I could make her cry without understanding why, which I have
  649. done too many times to count. I could let her die."
  650. [Info] Sydney: What's the advent of Shav?
  651. [Info] Shard: An important thing to remember about the Compact is that they don't and can't have
  652. hard borders (especially since they claim all of Arvum as their territory in the first place). Even
  653. between settlements, you can have Abandoned. Abandoned are just people who are not sworn to the the
  654. service of the king or one of the king's vassals, and it's a definite thing for Abandoned to pretend
  655. to be members of the Compact for various reasons and in various ways.
  656. [Info] Shard: So it's less 'this far away from Arx everyone's Abandoned' and more 'we've got all
  657. these groups all over the place who don't recognize our authority, because we can't actually police
  658. all the land we've claimed because it's enormous and full of areas that haven't been mapped by the
  659. Compact in generations if not centuries.'
  660. [Info] Ailith: lore abandoned explains about that -- there's pockets in likely nearly all house
  661. domains with shav tribes
  662. [Info] Ailith: Gray Forest is among the largest swathes of wilderness that have various tribes.
  663. [Info] Sydney: Thanks, y'all. I thought it'd eventually sink in as I played, and it just became an
  664. increasingly obvious lore gap.
  665. [Info] Lou: Until recently, there weren't even roads between the different fealties, and even still,
  666. most of the Houses still don't have roads between them, so lots of people are still graveling wild
  667. lands or deer paths and such to get back and forth; you can encounter abandoned / shav'arvani in any
  668. of those travel routes.
  669. [Info] Lou: graveling/traveling
  670. [Info] Leola: And there weren't even any sort of unified group trying to watch and study the forests
  671. and the Abandoned there. Until lately :D
  672. [Info] Ailith: Many character backgrounds remark about border disputes or shav raids.
  673. [Info] Lou: You can also lore/search abandoned for more info.
  674. [Dianna] Silence follows Ashur's declaration as Dianna allows the words to sink in.  "...And, what
  675. happened when you embarrassed her?" the priestess' question arises, at last, from the silence of the
  676. room.
  677. [Info] Lou just recently learned about the wonderful lore/search command. Which searches lore, clues
  678. you might have, and your revelations.
  679. [Info] Ailith: lore search also searches the theme board questions and shows it as a lore entry.pose sighs. "She left, crying." He drops his head into one hand. "I tried to stop her, but she
  680.  escaped. I did not see their faces. And they are too courteous to speak of it, of course, but... I am not good at these things, Di. In truth, I don't." He holds his breath and expels it
  681. rather harshly. "I don't care to be good at these things."
  682. Ashur sighs. "She left, crying." He drops his head into one hand. "I tried to stop her, but she
  683. escaped. I did not see their faces. And they are too courteous to speak of it, of course, but... I
  684. am not good at these things, Di. In truth, I don't." He holds his breath and expels it rather
  685. harshly. "I don't care to be good at these things."
  686. [Info] Ailith: And vast majority of Abandoned worship the pantheon. I forget the file that
  687. identified that. Shamanism is smaller degree of the abandoned. So not only do they look like Arvani
  688. and can talk like one, they tend to know the religion, too.
  689. [Dianna] "You don't have to be, Ash," Dianna replies gently.  "Is anyone asking you to be?  Or are
  690. you putting this demand upon yourself?  ...We ...tend to do this, rather often:  Expecting more of
  691. ourselves than others ask.  I know I do... because I get tired of the seemingly-impossible things
  692. that /are/ demanded."
  693. [Info] Lou: Though they do have their own pigeon tongue, which are the
  694. Crownlands/Lyceum/Northlands/Islands Shav'arvani languages.pose lifts his head and looks to Dianna instead of the mirror. "Aye, I suppose you are correct," he replies, forcing a smile. "No
  695. one is asking me to be anything." Still, he does not appear particularly happy. "Worry not, as I said, the confusion will pass. Things will settle. I know they do."
  696. Ashur lifts his head and looks to Dianna instead of the mirror. "Aye, I suppose you are correct," he
