- Ashur looks around, and finds a cushion, the object an anchor against a mirror surface of its own
- reflection. He moves to it and lowers himself, settling with an arm over a knee, and smiles towards
- Dianna again. It appears as if he is being extraordinarily careful of his surroundings and bearings.
- "How do you rip apart your own fears here?" he asks the priestess curiously. "What is it you fear?"
- [Someone wearing a jarring mirrormask formed of broken shards of stygian] Choosing a cushion of deep
- purple silk, the dark cloud of Dianna sits, her poise upright and seeming to gaze into the mirror
- ahead. "That is exactly what I shall ask myself, dear Ash," Dianna replies, her voice calm but
- uplifted. "Look into the the mirror ahead and consider yourself... I will remove my mask, so I may
- do it, too."
- The priestess removes her mask and sets it aside, gazing into the amber orbs ahead of her, as she's
- done hundreds of times. "The first step is to relax, greet yourself in the silence of your mind.
- There is no one here but you and I - and whatever exists beyond the mirror cannot come forth, for
- every surface in this room is washed in holy water. Focus on what you see... then focus deeper
- within, at what you feel. Do not stop the feelings; let them wash over and through you; let them
- exist, acknowledging them like a breeze, like water. They are as natural to you as every feeling
- you generally accept; but - if you do not allow these darker feelings to exist, they grow, gain
- strength and become quite demanding to be known. Best to seek them out, to give them the attention
- and affection they wish, now, while they are small and young."
- The priestess' palms rest upon her knees, relaxed and gently-cupped. She breathes deeply, the soft
- inhale-and-exhale audible. "I see you," she calmly speaks to her reflection. "Afraid... of what
- you do not know. Afraid to learn, and just as afraid to remain ignorant. Afraid to interfere with
- those who were your family - afraid to let go of them as family, and accept your new home, your new
- family."
- [Public] Brianna: so how do we read the new super-specific date?
- [Public] Valencia is so bored at work today.pose watches Dianna, listening. Then he turns attention on the Ashur in one of the mirrors that is directly across from him, frowning slightly.
- Producing a comb from a pouch on his belt, he carefully neatens his hair, and puts the comb away. This is important business, after all. He leans forward, squinting at himself. "I, er... see
- you," he begins, copying the priestess. "Afraid. Of. Er..." He simply stares at his own blank face, regarding whatever emotion might be taking its time to swirl to the surface. Perhaps this
- is more difficult for someone untrained, or he might just be particularly bad at it.

- [Dianna] "You know what you're afraid of, Ash - don't be afraid to let it rise to the surface, to
- feel it," Dianna quietly murrs without moving her gaze from her own eyes. "Look... and let it
- come."
- Dianna prompts quietly, "Are you afraid to be loved...?"
- A player you are watching, Arcadia, has disconnected.pose glances quickly to Dianna, and back to his expression. "I am," he confesses. "I fear letting people down. But more than that..." His
- face grows tight, as if he holds something in, but then he lets it out and it warps into a grimace that comes with a shallow gasp. "I don't want to lose... again." The contortion fades away
- as he stabilizes himself, looking downward. "It is easier to live a life without the feelings of others, or my own feelings for them, involved."

- [Ashur] Very quietly, Ashur adds, "I'm very selfish, Di."
- [Dianna] "Don't judge it, Ash - though you may very well be selfish. Merely look at it, accept
- it... and give it up to Tehom, that he may help you live with it, or take it from you - as you wish.
- Either is yours to do - as only /you/ wish, Ash," Dianna soothingly speaks, her gaze remaining upon

- be better never to have it. Some heal easily from these wounds, but perhaps..." He looks up across at the mirrors again, clearly trying to keep a nonjudgmental approach as Dianna has
- suggested, features blank as he looks upon his reflection as she does upon hers. "...perhaps in addition to selfishness, I am weaker than most, and a coward, as well."

- Upon stepping into what is probably the most opulent, yet simple room in this tranquil abode, one
- finds oneself helplessly, endlessly faced with their reflection in infinite, repeating patterns on
- all but one surface: the polished jet floor.
- Every other dominant surface in the Infinity Suite is sheeted with flawless mirrors, including the
- ceiling. The effect is dizzying as the door is closed, for even the back side of the door is
- covered by the same, perfect mirrored glass; and, bearing no handle, one becomes simply surrounded
- by oneself.
- Thirteen soft cushions wrapped in various shades of iridescent silk are scattered across the jet
- floor, which, being polished to a shine, is reflective, as well. Each cushion is embroidered with
- a different sigil, connoting each of the thirteen gods of the Pantheon.
- The purpose of this room is obvious, as is the god it represents.
- The theological principle, too, becomes conspicuously clear, the point hammered in the longer one
- remains:
- One can never escape oneself, no matter where one may turn. Even if into darkness.
- With no windows, torches or lanterns for lighting, several candles, probably lining the walls, must
- be lit, or one will find themselves enveloped in utter darkness.

- Tucked amidst the lush trees on Visitor Road is a generous-sized, two-story building with white
- stucco facade, accessed by a wide set of white marble stairs. A broad arcade runs atop the stairs,
- creating a sense of grandeur to the entrance while providing shelter from inclement weather. The
- entry doors are impressive: A thick layer of patinaed bronze overlays heavy oak double-doors in a
- pattern of ornately-embossed squares with scenes from the history of the Pantheon.
- The residence is dotted with windows: on the ground floor, each is protected by wrought iron grates
- to bar entrance from the outside. On the second floor, two sets glass-paned double-doors may be
- swung open towards the inside to capture fresh breezes or access the small balconies overlooking the
- street.
- On each balcony, curved waves of wrought iron surround the platform to keep spectators safe while
- twinkling luneria and dahlia flowers brighten the upper edge, flower pots hung from the curled
- wrought iron, sweet fragrances caught on the breeze in warmer weather.
- Stepping into the home is easily overwhelming: lush warmth pervades the garden courtyard in any
- season. A tall, domed roof of blues, white and crystal-clear glass blossoms high above, allowing
- sunlight to shear through in bright shards, allowing more than enough to sunlight even in winter,
- assuring that the myriad plants, trees and flowers in this generous courtyard flourish year-round.
- The floor is of a giant mosaic pattern, echoing the roof in cobalt, white and sky blue; a winding
- stone staircase commencing on the wall opposite the entrance climbs leftward and up half of the
- circumference of this room to a broad landing over the front doors, parapeted by a wrought iron
- railing and tiled with the same blues-and-white mosaic.
- A slender, babbling rivulet of water flows through the middle of the courtyard, facilitated by
- pushing the cool liquid down a stylized trough carved of spiraled, undulating granite. To the left
- of the main entrance and at the far end of the wide courtyard is a sunken pool, fed by this
- continuous stream and surrounded by leafy bushes and palms from the Southern climes of the Lyceum,
- to which fragrant wild orchids cling. So clear is the water of this well-tended pool that one can
- see that the bottom is actually pure-white sand. The continuous splash of the water from the rivulet
- creates, throughout this entire space, a calming, relaxing mood. The pool, should one decide they
- wish to swim in it, is a perfect coolness without being cold and flanked by natural paving stones.
- Opposite the room, one finds the source of the stream: A bubbling fountain that pushes water from
- somewhere below the mosaic floor. Beyond the fountain and tucked behind ferns, meandering vines of
- wild passionflowers and climbing jasmine is the arched doorway to a pristine bathhouse; across the
- room, another arched door leads into the salon.

- Upon entry into the bathhouse, one may be surprised at the relatively-
- small size of the initial room, tiled with a mosaic display of fish and
- sea creatures both real and mythical across the floors, walls, ceiling
- and descending staircase. The western wall is lined with shelves of

- Against the eastern wall rest two tall, woven bamboo baskets with lids.
- Tall, potted palms and flowers rest along the southern wall. Lighting
- the room are several stylized bronze sparkleglass lamps formed in the
- shapes of nude men and women with their lower halves formed as fish.
- Descending the mosaic-tiled stairs might be a dangerous task if not
- for the verdigris bronze hand-rail splitting the width of the winding
- staircase that bends to the left after thirteen steps. From the broad
- landing, one can, at last, witness the spectacle that makes this grotto
- so very unique:
- It may be known that the city of Arx sits atop meandering springs of all
- temperatures, but to find a sea-green basin such as this, dug naturally

- Bronze sparkleglass lanterns in exactly the same half-man/half-fish design
- as at the entrance light the otherwise-darkened grotto, shining with
- particular brightness at the opposite side of the basin, where a platform
- has been carved deeper into the rock, as well as three broad benches.
- Steam rises from the crystal-clear water; and to bathe in it leaves ones
- skin feeling silky-smooth, the minerals deeply nourishing and relaxing.

- [Info] Sydney: Theme question I've been too embarrassed to ask, but is overdue. Are there outlying
- regions outside of Arx that house people not considered abandoned? Like, compact territories of
- woodlands, farms, etc? How far does one need to be outside of Arx to be considered abandoned?
- [Info] Leola: They're called the Crownlands
- [Info] Sydney: See? Embarrassing.
- [Info] Lou: Nah. If you're newish to the game, everyone starts somewhere.
- [Info] Peri: I thought the Crownlands refered to the region overseen by Grayson (as opposed to The
- Oathlands, The North, etc)
- [Info] Corban: Abandoned, which is really not the common term that most Arvani would use, is anyone
- outside the Compact on Arvum.
- [Info] Sydney: I just had such a visceral first impression that outside Arx = You're abandoned now,
- with the whole Elisha thing happening in my formative noob days.
- [Info] Ras: When you look at the map of Arvum, all of that is considered the Compact, technically.
- There are all those towns and cities where the different houses rule for the sake of the king. Like
- somewhere as far as Pearlspire is still not far enough to be considered abandoned. I think that
- there are pockets of wilderness where wild tribes still live and those are Abandoned people but the
- Compact doesn't consider them 'Abandoned lands' - they still think they technically belong to the
- king.
- [Info] Lou: The crownlands are the areas that are overseen by Grayson, largely the wild areas within
- the Gray Forest and any area a fealty doesn't claim.
- [Info] Austen: https://play.arxgame.org/dom/map/
- [Info] Corban: Most Arvani would call the Abandoned 'shavs.'
- [Info] Lou: There's, however, literally tens of thousands of castles and wild areas that the compact
- hasn't reclaimed, that are overtaken by Abandoned.emit In the mirror, Ashur's expression is rendered thoughtful by Dianna's probing, but he seems unconcerned by the question. "No," he muses.
- "Truthfully, I would not be upset if she did. Loneliness is..." He smiles. "Something I have perfected. It is comfortable, and I enjoy it. But being with others brings the threat of
- failure." The smile disappears. "I could embarrass her in front of her family, which I have done. I could make her cry without understanding why, which I have done too many times to count. I
- could let her die."

- [Info] Sydney: What's the advent of Shav?
- [Info] Shard: An important thing to remember about the Compact is that they don't and can't have
- hard borders (especially since they claim all of Arvum as their territory in the first place). Even
- between settlements, you can have Abandoned. Abandoned are just people who are not sworn to the the
- service of the king or one of the king's vassals, and it's a definite thing for Abandoned to pretend
- to be members of the Compact for various reasons and in various ways.
- [Info] Shard: So it's less 'this far away from Arx everyone's Abandoned' and more 'we've got all
- these groups all over the place who don't recognize our authority, because we can't actually police
- all the land we've claimed because it's enormous and full of areas that haven't been mapped by the
- Compact in generations if not centuries.'
- [Info] Ailith: lore abandoned explains about that -- there's pockets in likely nearly all house
- domains with shav tribes
- [Info] Ailith: Gray Forest is among the largest swathes of wilderness that have various tribes.
- [Info] Sydney: Thanks, y'all. I thought it'd eventually sink in as I played, and it just became an
- increasingly obvious lore gap.
- [Info] Lou: Until recently, there weren't even roads between the different fealties, and even still,
- most of the Houses still don't have roads between them, so lots of people are still graveling wild
- lands or deer paths and such to get back and forth; you can encounter abandoned / shav'arvani in any
- of those travel routes.
- [Info] Lou: graveling/traveling
- [Info] Leola: And there weren't even any sort of unified group trying to watch and study the forests
- and the Abandoned there. Until lately :D
- [Info] Ailith: Many character backgrounds remark about border disputes or shav raids.
- [Info] Lou: You can also lore/search abandoned for more info.
- [Dianna] Silence follows Ashur's declaration as Dianna allows the words to sink in. "...And, what
- happened when you embarrassed her?" the priestess' question arises, at last, from the silence of the
- room.
- [Info] Lou just recently learned about the wonderful lore/search command. Which searches lore, clues
- you might have, and your revelations.
- [Info] Ailith: lore search also searches the theme board questions and shows it as a lore entry.pose sighs. "She left, crying." He drops his head into one hand. "I tried to stop her, but she
- escaped. I did not see their faces. And they are too courteous to speak of it, of course, but... I am not good at these things, Di. In truth, I don't." He holds his breath and expels it
- rather harshly. "I don't care to be good at these things."

- [Info] Ailith: And vast majority of Abandoned worship the pantheon. I forget the file that
- identified that. Shamanism is smaller degree of the abandoned. So not only do they look like Arvani
- and can talk like one, they tend to know the religion, too.
- [Dianna] "You don't have to be, Ash," Dianna replies gently. "Is anyone asking you to be? Or are
- you putting this demand upon yourself? ...We ...tend to do this, rather often: Expecting more of
- ourselves than others ask. I know I do... because I get tired of the seemingly-impossible things
