  1. Keywords for the debate.
  2. Jobs
  3. Romney’s five point plan.
  4. 1. Get us energy independent, North America independent in five years. That will create about 4 million jobs.
  5.
  6. We can’t just produce traditional source of energy, we also got to look on the future. You’ve got the oil and gas part, but he doesn’t have the clean energy part. And if we are only thinking about tomorrow and the next day and not thinking about ten years from now, we’re not going to control our own economic future. Because China, Germany, they are making these investments. And I’m not going to cease those jobs of the future to those countries, I expect those energy sources to be built right here in the united states. That’s going to help people get jobs, as well as make sure that we’ve are not paying as much for gas.
  7.
  8.
  9. 2. Open up more trade, particularly in Latin America. Cracking down in China when they cheat.
  10.
  11. 3. Make sure that our people have the skills they need to succeed and the best schools in the world. We’re a far away from that right now.
  12.
  13. * Give every family access to a great school and quality teachers.
  14. *Provide access to affordable and effective higher education options.
  15. *Focus job training programs on building valuable skills that align with opportunities.
  16. *Attract and retain the best and the brightest from around the world.
  17.
  18. *Where are the great schools and teachers going to come from?
  19. *And as for affordable and effective higher education, it sure sounds good on paper but nothing that’s been proposed in a GOP budget seems to support this notion.
  20. *Attracting the best from around the world sounds to me like giving up America and instead taking advantage of other countries who know how valuable a real education can be.
  21.
  22.
  23. 4. Get us to a balanced budget.
  24.
  25. 5. Champion small business. It’s the small businesses that create the jobs in America. And over the last four years small business people have decided that America may not be the place to open a new business. Because new business startups are down to a 30 year old low.
  26.
  27. First, define small business. I have no problem with the notion of tax reform. In fact, I believe it is vital. But the idea that job creation is tied to corporate and individual taxes is a red herring. Nothing in your plan helps the middle class grow to afford more goods and services. We’ve made sure that small business is not burdened with too-high taxes.
  28.
  29. Business thrives when citizens have money to spend on goods and services.
  30.
  31.
  32. Those are all reasonable ideas, but working out trade agreements takes a long time. Getting the oil pipeline up and running takes a long time. Rewriting and implementing a new corporate tax code takes a long time. Changing China’s policies also takes a long time. It’s difficult to see how any of those ideas creates a substantial number of jobs quickly.
  33.
  34. Our plan
  35.
  36. We need to build on the 5 million jobs that we’ve created over the last 30 months in the private sector alone. And I’ll explain how we are going to do it.
  37. 1. Build manufacturing jobs in this country again.
  38. 2. We need to make sure that we are at the best education system in the world. Everyone should get a grade education. Community colleges need to offer slots for workers, to get retrained for the jobs that are out there right now and the jobs for the future.
  39. 3. We got to control our own energy. Not only oil and natural gas, which we’ve been investing in, but also we need to get sure we’re building the energy sources for the future. Not just the next year, but 10 years from now, 20 years from now. That’s why we invest in solar, wind, biofuels. Energy efficient cars. Ask the wealthy to pay a little more so that we can invest for the future. Let’s take the money that we’ve been spending on war over the last decade to rebuild America. Roads, bridges schools.
  40.
  41. 4. We also need to increase infrastructure investment, hire more state and local workers, double the size of the payroll tax cut and add a new set of tax cuts for small businesses and companies that hire new employees.
  42.
  43. Two of those policies imply directly hiring hundreds of thousands of workers. The two others move money into the economy immediately. It’s easier to see how these policies lead to more demand in the short term.
  44.
  45. We do those things, and I’ll promise that Americas future will be bright.
