IMS Hephaestus

The Hephaestus class is composed of a series of heavy transports that have been purchased by the Greenfly cell of the GEF. After their regular service life in the inner solar system ended, these ships were refitted to serve as general purpose manufacturing and aid centers for the GEF's far-flung Kuiper Belt colonies. Several of their massive cargo holds have been filled with machine shops, smelting plants, and fabricator lines. While not self-sufficient, they are still able to serve the needs of any colony during the initial seeding phase.
There are only a handful of these ships, but together they give the Greenfly cell an industrial capability to fulfill any short- and medium-term needs without having to resort to help from the inner system. As such, they form a cornerstone of the GEF's Very Large Self Sufficient Ship concept.
