- Thoughts on: Server Operating System
- This is my last in a 4 part series. I went with a dedicated server on OVH. This is allowing me to install a variety of operating systems and control panels. I think I'm going to go with Plesk or maybe cPanel (and domain registration through CloudFlare). I'll be running a dozen or so website domains, a few more subdomains. I'll have a few WordPress instances using MySQL and PHP. I'll be the only admin.

- I can re-install at anytime, but would like not to have to once I start development. To test things out, I went with:
- Linux Plesk Onyx (Debian 9 "Stretch") - debian9-plesk17 - 64 bit
- I made this decision based on nothing more than my current dedicated server at Ionos is Debian 8 and I figured 9 is 1 better than 8. Other than the default control panel installed, would I even ever notice a difference with any of the following options?
- Hello, my thoughts are when you've got the latest OS it will allow you to get the latest mirrors as the hardware is most up to date.
- It is always advised to get the latest updates to avoid attacks to the server.
- Let us know how you get on...
- Having a more up-to-date OS is always preferable for a more stable kernel, better security, and better package compatibility. As far as noticing a difference? Probably not much, except for some esoteric minor details here and there.
- Updating is always good for security and performance, but make sure your scripts/sites are compatible with Debian 9.
- I would setup the Debian 9 server and move a copy of the sites to make sure everything is working as it should. If not, then you troubleshoot the problems with the help of Debian support and forums.
- If it doesn't work out for you, you can always switch back to Debian 8.
