- The Bell PMP is an internship program located within the campus of Bell Mobility Headquarters, in Mississauga, Ontario. The program is offered to recent or future grads and is meant to help associates develop themselves professional and gain valuable hands on experience. There is also an opportunity here to network, and well and undergo mentorship partnerships with senior Bell staff. The PMP provides various workshops that are aimed to develop interview skills or build strong resumes. There are also a variety of other workshops, including, but not limited to, health and wellbeing, eco-friendliness and awareness, Microsoft Project, Visual Basic for applications, MySQL, career development, and many others. The Bell PMP operates under Bell's Market Analysis and Intelligence department, whose primary goal is to gather and analyze market data to aid in financial decisions made by Bell Mobility and Bell Canada Enterprises.
- The Information Communications Technology - Hardware department's key responsibility is to provide administrative support and maintenance to The PMP's various servers (such as render farms and storage databases), employee workstations, interactive digital signage, media centers, display systems, writing surfaces, theater systems, projectors, printers, faxes, scanners, and various other electronics used around the office. In addition, the hardware department employs custom solutions for many of their needs. For instance, all employee workstations are built in house by hardware associates. Some projectors require custom mounting in order for their image to be displayed on a specific surface, and thus a custom mount must be created in the in house fabrication studio. Long range, focused Wi-Fi antennas needed to be installed within the office to provide wireless network access within Bell's Campus, and required the expertise of our department.
- In general, the ICT Hardware works with all other departments (Analytics, Creative, Software, Geo-Spatial Analysis, Media and Communications, Project Management, Program Marketing, and Talent Management), providing daily support to associates in need and performing up keeping tasks to ensure maximum performance, efficiency, and uptime in the office. Since everything is managed in house, technical support is provided instantly, and often problems are resolved within fifteen minutes of the request being placed. The drastically reduces downtime, improves employee morale, and also helps Hardware associates network with other department. As such, every time I had to service an associate's workstation, I also had opportunities to network with others who have extremely different professional backgrounds, and of course meet many interesting people. Often, the hardware department would collaborate with other departments to accomplish joint projects. Arrangements and setups around the office were made in conjunction with the project management department, and various endeavors and projects were conducted alongside the creative department.
- Within a week I had been brought up to speed and had been issued a set of daily tasks. These were to be performed throughout various times in the day and varied in process. At the start of my predetermined day of the week, I was responsible for activating digital signage, display systems, and render farms. Throughout the day, projectors and systems would need to be readied for meetings and presentations. These systems would have be checked for full operation and prepared for use. The IT storage and studio sees heavy traffic consistently throughout the day and often succumbed to clutter. This would need to be cleared and organized on a frequent basis throughout the day. I also had several ongoing projects at once. There were a few to repair malfunctioning computers and computer components, carrying out RMA requests, as well as building custom modified computers for marketing and promotional purposes. I was also filmed as a presenter and narrator in informative how to videos and wrote a variety instructional documentations.
- Especially during the building of custom modified computers, I worked closely with many of my department associates. During my tenure at the PMP, I was designated as a project leader for most of the custom computer builds. As such, I recommended to my team members that we work modularly. That is, we create parts individually or with others as needed, and then join together parts in phases or stages. Some of the later or more advanced pieces depended on the completion of parts of earlier stages. This created an element of scheduling as the team relied on its members to complete tasks by their specified due date in order to keep all the modules produced, assembled, and placed in sync with each other. The scheduling was developed as a group and put into place as a team also created in consideration of other responsibilities around the office such as service routines, duties, and even workshops. Luckily, most delays were avoided and things were kept structured enough to have a legitimate time frame, yet flexible enough to allow for delays or problems.
- Some of the common tasks in the office was performing upkeep on the many machines that the office employs. There is a system upgrade schedule for workstations for each department. Since each department performs unique tasks, computers such as those in the creative department require high performance hardware and therefore have higher priority in the upgrade schedule. The ICT Hardware department manages its own acquisition of equipment. As such, it has made the decision to order computer hardware as individual parts and components only, rather than ordering preassembled computers. This removed the aspect of fixed specifications in systems. As new hardware was released and attained by our department, they would be immediately installed in the highest priority systems. The old parts that were replaced are usually still functional, and are then handed down to lower priority systems. As such, upgrades are frequent, and this allows associates to enjoy a modern computer system more often than the rigid, complete-system upgrade cycle employed in most offices. As a result, there are frequent upgrade tasks, and these are performed on a daily basis.
- During my time at the PMP I also had the opportunity to work on instructional videos. My particular role in this project was to be filmed demonstrating the assembly of a particular machine that had not yet been documented before. I also created documentation for a variety of other purposes.
- In addition, there are long term projects. In particular, I worked on a few custom made computers that were to be displayed and used for promotional purposes. These systems had custom fabricated parts, and much time was spent designing, planning, creating, and assembling these parts. These projects team efforts, and the task of leading and organizing was my responsibility.
