  1. Writer's Note: This is /technically/ a continuation of "A Magic Touch" and you'll probably enjoy this more if you've already read it, but you don't NEED to read it first. This story is more than capable of standing on its own, albeit with a few unexplained situations. The sequel, however... not so much.

  5. -------
  6.
  7.
  8. >As you walk through the bright opulent halls of Canterlot Castle, there's a sense of comfort and familiarity calming your mind.
  9. >Home away from home.
  10. >"Were the gryphons able to comfortably accommodate you?"
  11. >You take a second to adjust your bag before answering the dark blue alicorn keeping pace alongside you.
  12. "It was a little on the... /waitaminute/."
  13. >Luna adopts a confused expression as you squint at her, pointing a finger in suspicion.
  14. "You're not trying to use this as leverage against them, right? I didn't agree to be a foreign diplomat. I have /rights/, dammit!"
  15. >The Night Princess, having grown familiar with your antics, merely shakes her head.
  16. >"The relations between Equestria and Griffionia have been stable for many years, and We intend to keep it that way."
  17. >Oh.
  18. "Good thinking... Y'know, I'm starting to see why you're the princess."
  19. >The faintest of smiles forms, but otherwise she remains stoical.
  20. >"Do not skirt the inquiry, Anonymous."
  21. >Right, right.
  22. "Yeah, it was... unique. Gryphons are a rowdy bunch, though I'm guessing you already know that."
  23. >A nod is her only response as the pair of you turn a corner.
  24. >You have /no/ idea where she's taking you. Though your knowledge of the castle interior has expanded greatly over the past several months, you oftentimes find yourself lost if left unattended.
  25. >Luna was quite enamored at the idea of having you wear a necklace with the inscription 'If found, please return to Princess Luna', but you shot that down for obvious reasons.
  26. "Overall I had fun. Met some nice gryphons, some... not-so-nice ones, ate food..."
  27. >You trail off, salivating at the events of last night.
  28. "Oh /yeah/..."
  29. >Luna doesn't miss your daydreaming, smiling knowingly as she comes to a stop near a set of barely-cracked doors.
  30. >You, on the other hand, don't.
  31. >It takes a shameful number of seconds before it properly clicks, and you hastily turn around to face an amused alicorn.
  32. >"We are glad to learn your carnivorous appetite was wholly sated."
  33. >You glance around aimlessly as you stroll back to her, pretending to hesitate on answering.
  34. "...I can neither confirm nor deny those allegations."
  35. >The doors swing inward with a push from Luna, and she heads inside with you right behind her.
  36. >Despite your horrendous path-finding, you knew for a FACT the Night Princess wasn't taking you to the room you normally stay in.
  37. >Even so, you're a bit befuddled at the surroundings.
  38. >This looks an awful lot like a conference room.
  39. >There's the typical oval table, chairs... water cooler?
  40. >There's even a chalkboard.
  41. >Luna makes her way to said board before turning around, facing you with an expectant look.
  42. >"Do not stand by the entrance, Anonymous. Come, there are many chairs for you to rest on."
  43. >You blink, realizing with a start that you had stopped just inside the doorway.
  44. >Whoops.
  45. >As you close the distance towards her, you scratch your temple in mild confusion.
  46. "Uhhh, what are we doing here?"
  47. >Luna motions towards the board as you grab a chair to sit down on.
  48. >"Nightmare Night approaches, and there are many preparations to be made if we want it to be a success."
  49. >As you drop your bag on the floor and your rear on the seat, you note the subtle shift in her tone.
  50. >/Someone/ is getting into this.
  51. >Your gaze drifts to the chalkboard as you respond.
  52. "In hindsight, I probably should've asked what you had in mind... but, uh... better late..."
  53. >Your sentence dies in your throat as you take in the contents of the board.
  54. "...Is that /Canterlot/?"
  55. >You're referring to the bird's-eye view drawing covering the entire space, barely any section of the board left untouched.
  56. >Littered about in various places are arrows pointing here and there, with the occasional annotation denoting various places of interest.
  57. >...
  58. >Did she draw ALL of this?
  59. >Luna glances briefly at her work before looking back to your incredulous form, clearly far less impressed than you.
  60. >"Verily. A map was required, but We could not find one that suited Our needs."
  61. >Ahh...
  62. >Luna's horn lights up, and a pointer flies out from behind the chalkboard.
  63. >So she's about to give you a presentation on your plans for this evening? Sheesh.
  64. >That's the kind of preparation you only expect from Book Horse.
  65. >"Bear with Us for a few minutes. We promise that Our plans hold little complexity."
  66. >The pointer floats over to you, your eyes crossing as it invades your view.
  67. >Is she...
  68. "Don't--"
  69. >*Boop*
  70. >...
  71. >Luna allows herself a smile as the pointer returns to her side.
  72. >You in the meantime, rub your violated nose with vigor.
  73. >You need a shower.
  74. >"It was merely a light touch, Anonymous. We felt it fair for you to experience your work firsthoof."
  75. >You stop your rubbing, raising an eyebrow in chagrin.
  76. >There's only one person in Equestria who can deliver all-powerful boopings, and that's YOU.
  77. >This poser thinks she can weasel in on /your/ territory?
  78. >Think again, Luna.
  79. >You begin to deliver a scathing rebuttal, but pause.
  80. >No... You have other ways to go about this.
  81. >The Night Princess remains cheerful as you cross your legs, leaning back into the chair.
  82. >There's a small grin beginning to form as you speak.
  83. "You're playing a /very/ dangerous game, Luna."
  84. >"Interesting. We were unaware of such actions."
  85. "All it takes is one touch."
  86. >You raise a finger.
  87. "/One/, and for you, Nightmare Night passes by like /that/."
  88. >You snap your fingers for effect.
  89. >Your threat– if you can even call it that– is nothing but hot air and both of you know that.
  90. >Despite that, Luna scoffs, gazing upon you as a heavyweight boxer would to a featherweight.
  91. >"And how would you go about doing so? We are more than capable of keeping you at bay with a simple spell."
  92. >Damn magic. Alicorns are overpowered, please nerf.
  93. >You fix to Luna's eyes, doing your best not to lose focus.
  94. "Can you really? Would you be so cruel as to push away your /best friend/ when all he asks for is one..."
  95. >Up goes a finger, your voice softening.
  96. "...Small..."
  97. >You repeat the motion that's been ingrained in your hands for months.
  98. "...Touch?"
  99. >The room is silent as you await Luna's answer, a cheeky grin adorning your features.
  100. >The Night Princess is near-expressionless, and you can't tell if that's due to your light-hearted question or something else.
  101. >Eventually she lets out a faint huff, closing her eyes for a moment.
  102. >When they reopen, she responds.
  103. >"Anonymous, Nightmare Night only occurs once a year, thus We ask that you refrain from engaging in your ministrations for the duration of the event. We have been looking forward to spending the evening together with you for many weeks."
  104. >You miss the days when declarations like that would only make you feel warm and fuzzy.
  105. >Now, along with that, you get butterflies in your stomach.
  106. >You resist the urge to punch your gut, uncrossing your legs as you raise your hands in surrender.
  107. "/Fine/, I'll try to keep my hands to myself... but ONLY for you. Everyone else is fair game."
  108. >That elicits a smile from Luna, who raises the pointer in preparation.
  109. >"We will be amazed if anypony accepts boopings from you tonight."
  110. >At that, you raise an eyebrow while frowning.
  111. "Wuzzat supposed to mean? Why wouldn't they?"
  112. >"We have conceived a most frightening costume for you that will suit us well. Now, if you will direct your attention /here/..."
  113.
  114.
  115. >Ahhh, dinner really hit the spot.
  116. >Can't scare the Cutie Marks off of ponies without a proper meal beforehand!
  117. >As you head into your room, you offer a curt, solemn nod to the two guards stationed outside.
  118. >Poor bastards are gonna miss out on Nightmare Night because they have to guard your room.
  119. >...
  120. >Maaaaybe you can ease the pain.
  121. >You halt for a second before nonchalantly walking backwards and back into the hallway.
  122. >Although their heads don't budge, both pairs of eyes adjust to properly view you.
  123. >This whole 'barely acknowledge you unless you speak first' shtick is starting to get kinda old.
  124. >Setting aside your small gripe, you lean down, resting your hands on your knees as you whisper not-so-inconspicuously.
  125. "Hey guys... ya wanna see something /real/ scary?"
  126. >Two minutes later you're whistling to yourself as the doors close, leaving behind the awestruck duo to work out their newfound joy.
  127. >The late-afternoon sun shines through the large windows, lighting up the room and hinting towards the approaching festivities.
  128. >You should probably get yourself ready... not that there's much to do.
  129. >You're not changing clothes, putting on makeup, or doing anything that requires extensive preparation.
  130. >Luna made it very clear that magic will be playing a large part in not only your costume, but the entirety of Nightmare Night.
  131. >You were a little dubious at her plans at first, but she assured you everything would fall into place.
  132. >So here you are, getting ready to put on the one physical piece of your costume. Everything else will be applied by Luna.
  133. >Said costume lies neatly on your bed, and you head over to pick it up, holding it away from you so that you can study it.
  134. >Not that there's much to study.
  135. >Your attire for this evening is a plain long, black closed robe with a simple hoodie.
  136. >That's it. That is literally it.
  137. >You hoist the robe over your head, letting it drop down so you can put it on.
  138. >The sleeves are a bit wide and the robe reaches the floor, but you'll chalk that up to intended design.
  139. >The hood stretches far when worn, threatening to cut off your vision. No amount of adjusting seems to fix it, so you admit defeat, keeping it on so you can get used to it.
  140. >Overall, you look and feel like an idiot.
  141. >Patience, Anon. You know this isn't the final product. If you're gonna strike terror into the residents of Canterlot, you need more than a glorified curtain.
  142. >As you waddle back and forth, focusing on not tripping over the fabric, a few short knocks reverberate through the doors.
  143. >That's probably Luna.
  144. "I'm indecent! Don't come in!"
  145. >A few seconds pass, then a door opens as a boundary-deficient alicorn steps inside.
  146. >You, understandably, are miffed, staring in disbelief at her.
  147. "WOW, what is privacy and how does it work. Did you not hear me? What if I was changing?!"
  148. >Luna blinks, giving your outfit a short once-over as the door closes.
  149. >"You appear to be fully clothed."
  150. "What. /If/."
  151. >Now a non-existent eyebrow is raised, the Night Princess still not empathizing with your plight.
  152. >"Anonymous, you have swapped clothing within our presence many times."
  153. >...
  154. >Oh right, that excuse stopped working a long time ago.
  155. >You balk for a brief moment before resuming, not letting up on your adamant insistence that she was in the wrong.
  156. "Whatever. What if I was /nude/?! The horror!"
  157. >At this point Luna rolls her eyes, a gesture you rarely coax out of her unless you've been extra stupid and/or endearing.
  158. >"A lack of clothing will not stop Us from convening with you. While We understand your desire to remain concealed in public, such inhibitions should not remain when among friends."
  159. >Luna smiles.
  160. >"Besides, We greatly prefer when you choose to remain undressed."
  161. >...
  162. >Your eye twitches as you struggle to snuff out the embarrassment and laughter forming within.
  163. >Phrasing, Luna. Phrasing!
  164. >Apparently Dream You already tried warning her about the questionable ways she goes about delivering lines.
  165. >She got the gist of it, but chose to continue on because it doesn't bother her and you mostly find it funny.
  166. >Mostly.
  167. >A lot of those unintentional innuendoes sound different now, for better or worse.
  168. >You lightly cough into a fist, letting out some of the nervous giggles.
  169. "Let's, uh... let's focus on Nightmare Night."
  170. >Luna nods. You swear her smile has turned a little more impish.
  171. >"As you wish. Give Us a moment to raise the moon; then we will begin."
  172. >You glance outside to the balcony where Luna is heading and sure enough, dusk is approaching.
  173. >It's nearly time!
  174. >You turn on a lamp before ambling over to sit on the massive bed, pulling down your hood as you sit and watch Luna perform her duties.
  175. >This isn't the first time you've seen her raise the moon. More than once you've stood alongside her as she moved the massive celestial body.
  176. >Quite frankly, the process is hella anti-climactic. It could definitely use more flashy lights and movements.
  177. >Tonight is no exception...
  178. >Kind of.
  179. >Unlike the other times, Luna's wings extend to their full length as she brings up the moon, treating you to a new sight.
  180. >Hey, that's pretty cool.
  181. >Even after the job is done, Luna remains still, her head raised and mane flowing as she observes the night sky.
  182. >She really does look majestic like this.
  183. >You have no idea how long she stands there, but eventually her wings return to her side and Luna re-enters the room.
  184. >"Our work is finished, and now we can begin."
  185. >...
  186. >"Anonymous?"
  187. >Wha...
  188. >You come crashing back down to earth with a start, realizing with growing mortification that you've been gawking at Luna for the past several minutes.
  189. >If she has any objection to your staring, she says nothing. In fact, she appears amused.
  190. >Dumb heart rate, who said you could work double time?
  191. >You jump to your feet, nearly tripping over the robe as you look left and right for something, /anything/ to defuse the situation.
  192. >...Or you could just respond like a regular human being.
  193. "Let's, uh... let's focus on Nightmare Night."
  194. >Clearly you're filled to the brim with fresh dialogue.
  195. >The Night Princess chuckles, making you grin uneasily.
  196. >Haha, yeah. Classic Anon.
  197. >"If you insist. Now, please remain still; this will take but a moment."
  198. >Luna lowers her head until her horn is pointing straight at your chest, the appendage glowing with a cobalt light.
  199. >Ever the perfect listener, you don't move a muscle, eyeing her horn with mild trepidation.
  200. >You've been carried plenty of times, but you've never actually had a spell used /on/ you before.
  201. >Now that you think about it, does that count as a spell being applied to you? Good question, you should ask--
  202. >You thought goes unfinished as a short beam of magic erupts from Luna's horn, speeding through the air to nail you dead-center in your chest.
  203. >Natural instincts make you wince, your hands clenching as your body prepares for the worst.
  204. >...
  205. >Huh. You don't feel anything.
  206. >Examining your chest, you see no scorch marks or blemishes of any kind. A cursory look at your hands turn up the same result.
  207. >Sooo... she didn't do anything or what.
  208. >You glance back to the dark blue alicorn.
  209. >Luna appears happy, taking in your unchanged form with great interest.
  210. >"Perfect."
  211. >Uhh...
  212. "Unless I've gone blind, I don't see any changes."
  213. >You give yourself another once-over before nodding in confirmation.
  214. "Yeah, nothing."
  215. >"Perhaps you need to gaze upon yourself from a different viewpoint. A mirror will suffice."
  216. >You give Luna a puzzled look, then shrug.
  217. "Alright."
  218. >There's a suitable mirror on the other side of the room, so you head over to see what all the fuss is about.
  219. >Seriously, you can't feel a thing. Maybe you're not supposed to--
  220. >...
  221. >What.
  222. >The.
  223. >/Fuck/.
  224. >You stare in raw disbelief and incredulity at the sight before you.
  225. >Gazing back at you in the mirror, is a skull.
  226. >A goddamn human skull.
  227. >Is that... /your skull/?!
  228. >You reach up with a hand, only to stop in even more surprise as you see the boney digits occupying the space where your fingers rest.
  229. >Holy...
  230. >You slowly reach back up, watching the bare finger poke your cheekbone... but feeling your flesh.
  231. >This is purely visual. Without a mirror, you see yourself as unchanged but everyone else is treated to a frightening sight.
  232. >Un-freakin'-believable.
  233. >You continue to poke and prod various points on your head and neck, marveling at Luna's work as you whisper to yourself in disbelief.
  234. "Holy /shit/."
  235. >Skulls definitely shouldn't be that expressive. Seems your alicorn buddy took a few creative liberties.
  236. >You're so wrapped up in fondling yourself, you don't notice Luna until she's right next to you.
  237. >"Have thou tried wearing thy hood?"
  238. >Despite her calm exterior, you can always tell when the Night Princess is getting excited.
  239. >You say nothing, letting your actions speak for themselves as you flip the hood back up.
  240. >Once again your peripheral vision tanks, but that matters little.
  241. >In the mirror, your head is shrouded in darkness despite the modest illumination in the room, making it difficult for anyone to properly view the skull.
  242. >Awesome.
  243. >Earlier in the day, although Luna shared tonight's game plan with you, she refused to fully divulge your getup.
  244. >Now you see why.
  245. >You're overwhelmed, to say the least.
  246. "This... this is /insane/."
  247. >Luna merely continues to smile, having mostly caught up with modern-day slang thanks to you.
  248. "How did you come up with this?"
  249. >"We spent many a day pondering over a fitting costume for thee. Understandably, Our choices were limited due to thy stature... although it is thy height which enhances the costume."
  250. >You glance back to the skull in the mirror, chuckling a little.
  251. "So you decided to keep it, uh... 'simple'--"
  252. >You air-quote with your fingers.
  253. "--Using magic?"
  254. >You've finally figured out how these things work.
  255. >It's magic, ya ain't gotta explain shit.
  256. >"Verily. However, there /is/ one final item to compliment thy attire."
  257. "Oh?"
  258. >Before you can ask, there's a flash of light.
  259. >When it dissipates, you're left staring at an object you've only dreamed of.
  260. "A fuckin' /scythe/?!"
  261. >"We believe it fits well."
  262. >Why would ponies need a scythe?
  263. >You know firsthand that Luna is big on roughhousing but who the hell uses a scythe for anything other than show? They're horribly impractical.
  264. >You swear if she made the damn thing just for tonight...
  265. >A hand reaches out to grab the floating weapon, but Luna shifts it away from you, eyeing you with hesitance.
  266. >"We are more than familiar with thy capabilities, Anonymous. This scythe is not a toy. Promise Us thou will be careful when wielding it."
  267. >Okay, just because you're a hopeless mess when it comes to learning proper combat technique doesn't mean you're incapable of holding the damn thing.
  268. >You're using it for show, you're not gonna smite any poor pastel ponies.
  269. >Regardless, you recognize that look Luna's giving you, and don't bother trying to downplay her concerns.
  270. "I'll be on my upmost behavior when lugging it around, I /promise/."
  271. >Your words satisfy Luna, and the scythe floats over to you, allowing you to relinquish it from her.
  272. >To your relief, the scythe is shorter than you expected, indicating it wasn't custom made.
  273. >...Not that you wouldn't be even /more/ impressed if it was. Really, Luna's gone all-out for this evening.
  274. >With the final piece of the puzzle in your hand, you strike a simple, lax pose in front of the mirror so you can gaze upon your fearsome costume.
  275. >The Grim Reaper has arrived.
  276. >...
  277. >Oh yeah, this kicks /ass/.
  278. >If Luna was trying to make you love Nightmare Night, she's doing a damn good job.
  279. >You haven't even gotten around to terrorizing anyone yet and you're having fun.
  280. >"Thou are a terrible sight to behold."
  281. "All thanks to you. Should definitely be able to frighten ponies with this."
  282. >...
  283. >You frown.
  284. "Wait a second, are we going after kids too?... I don't think it's a good idea to emotionally scar them for life."
  285. >Luna shakes her head in amusement, another flash of cobalt light making you wince.
  286. >You blankly stare at the cheap pair of plastic fangs hovering next to her as she responds.
  287. >"Thy jurisdiction lies within an enclosed area specifically warning ponies of the perils that lie ahead. Colts and fillies are strictly prohibited."
  288. >Damn, an entire area sectioned off just for the pair of you to wreak havoc? You thought Luna was just trying to catch as many unfortunate stragglers as possible.
  289. >The Night Princess slips in the fangs, biting a few times to make sure they fit.
  290. >When she looks back to you, you jerk away in faux-terror, stumbling as you nearly trip over your robe.
  291. "/JESUS/, you scared the hell outta me!"
  292. >Your reward is a snort from the dark blue mare, the fangs threatening to fall out.
  293. >"Allow Us to rectify Our actions."
  294. >Luna's horn glows, and this time, her entire body is engulfed in white light, forcing you to look away lest you burn your retinas.
  295. >Sheesh, someone could go blind if they weren't careful.
  296. >Soon enough, the light vanishes, and you lower your raised arm to view Luna's attire for the evening.
  297. >"Is this better?"
  298. >...
  299. >Huh.
  300. >You rub your chin, taking in the alicorn before you.
  301. "You look different... Did you get taller?"
  302. >Although her voice has changed, it's the same Luna you know that sarcastically responds.
  303. >"A most astute observation, Anonymous."
  304. "Thanks."
  305. >Luna turns to eye herself in the mirror and you follow suit, the pair of you standing side by side to form what is undoubtedly Equestria's scariest duo.
  306. >You can't resist.
  307. "Listen, Nightmare Moon. Nightmare Night needs a new scary villain, and I daresay I fit that role /perfectly/."
  308. >Thanks to her new height, Luna doesn't have to look up to gaze at you, a predatory grin forming.
  309. >...You prefer the old Luna.
  310. >"Is that a challenge I hear?"
  311. >Damn, not even using the Royal We. She's super serious.
  312. >You adjust the scythe, letting the butt of the stick rest on the ground as you address her with a grin of your own.
  313. "/Now/ it is. Let's keep it simple. After we spook a group, I'll ask which one of us was scarier. Whoever scares the most ponies by the end of tonight wins."
  314. >"Do tell, what /does/ the victor win?"
  315. >It only takes you a second to come up with a decent reward.
  316. "The loser has to do one thing for the winner. /No backing out/."
  317. >While the spoils sound mediocre, there are two things that made you choose it.
  318. >One: You couldn't think of anything better in the spur of the moment.
  319. >Two: You're familiar with Luna. While you'd never wager such a thing against Skittles, you know the Night Princess doesn't care for making you look like a fool... on purpose, anyway.
  320. >The same can be said for you as well, so there's almost nothing to lose in this competition. Really, it's nothing more than a healthy dose of competitiveness.
  321. >A few seconds pass as Luna/Nightmare Moon muses over your conditions.
  322. >Finally she chuckles, letting out a low, evil laugh that immediately makes you second-guess your offer.
  323. >"Very well, Anonymous. I accept your challenge."
  324. >Suddenly her wings extend, forcing you to sidestep to avoid getting walloped.
  325. >"Prepare to be obliterated by the power of ETERNAL NIGHT!"
  326. >With that declaration, Luna proceeds to cackle madly, the Royal Canterlot Voice out in full effect.
  327. >Having grown disturbingly used to its volume, you smile as you imagine the guards and ponies outside thoroughly confused.
  328. >Thankfully Luna keeps it short, petering out to end it with a sneer.
  329. >Is that all she has? Hilarious.
  330. >You got this in the bag.
  331. >You clear your throat so you can project your tone lower than normal.
  332. "'Eternal night?' How /foalish/ of you. I can think of one thing ponies fear more than darkness."
  333. >The Night Princess ceases her sneering, instead gazing at you with a mixture of curiosity and mild apprehension.
  334. >Recognizing the unspoken question, you slowly reach up, lowering your hood as you brandish your scythe.
  335. "Death."
  336. >...
  337. >Ignoring the dangerous levels of edgelord you're reaching, you're really starting to get into this role.
  338. >Shame you can't do anything about your voice. Would be a lot more intimidating if it was gravely n' stuff.
  339. >...Actually, you can probably ask Luna.
  340. >Yeah, you'll do that.
  341. >Speaking of, Luna is currently regarding you with a look that heavily implies she's impressed.
  342. >"You fit your role well, Anonymous."
  343. >You smirk.
  344. "You too."
  345. >"Then let us not wait any longer. Nightmare Night is calling."
  346. >The Night Princess's horn lights up in a familiar cobalt aura, though her intentions elude you.
  347. >Doesn't matter. Before you guys leave, you wanna ask if she can do something about your voice.
  348. "Luna, is it possible for--"
  349. >Your words are cut off as you feel a strange sensation course through you.
  350. >What the fu--
  351. >You're somewhere else.
  352. >One picosecond ago you were somewhere, now you're not there.
  353. >That's the best your brain can scrounge up as you tip forward, your legs still stuck in the past.
  354. >Faceplanting hurts like a bitch. Thank goodness you're on grass.
  355. >The surge of pain is enough to quick-start everything else, and you groan.
  356. >Seriously, that hurt like a bitch.
  357. >Before you can move, you're instantly hoisted by a magic aura, the scythe remaining on the ground.
  358. >"Are you okay, Anonymous?!"
  359. You're unwillingly swiveled to face a concerned Nightmare Moon... if such a thing is possible.
  360. >Luna's voice has also returned to normal.
  361. >Seeing as you're unable to move a muscle, you opt to talk.
  362. ".../Please/ warn me the next time you decide to teleport us."
  363. >You've never done that before. Hell, you didn't even know it could be done.
  364. >All you know is your brain called it quits the second it realized you were no longer at point A.
  365. >Luna wilts a little, clearly guilty over her mistake.
  366. >"Our apologies. We did not consider the possibility of there being an issue."
  367. >God you hate seeing her look even a little glum.
  368. "Me neither. It took me by surprise, that's all. I'm fine, I swear."
  369. >You're lowered until you can stand on your own, Luna also returning the scythe to your hand.
  370. >Now free to move around, you brush stray blades of grass off your robe before taking in your surroundings.
  371. >The night is young, yet dim, the moon illuminating less than usual. Street lamps keep the area just bright enough to navigate through, but nothing more.
  372. >You now realize you're in a small park you've visited once or twice with Luna, although that was during the day.
  373. >Now it's eerily quiet, although if you listen hard enough, you can barely make out the sounds of Canterlot's citizens enjoying their frightful night elsewhere.
  374. >There isn't a nearby soul to be seen. You must be in the quarantined area of Canterlot.
  375. >As though she can read your mind, Luna confirms your suspicions.
  376. >"The hour draws near. Come, Anonymous, it is nearly time."
  377. >Luna sets off towards a dirt path, and you follow suit, staying beside her.
  378. >...Didn't you have a favor to ask her?
  379. "Luna."
  380. >The Night Princess glances over to you, her slit-like pupils boring into yours.
  381. >Weird.
  382. >You point towards your throat.
  383. "Is there a way make me sound more... badass?"
  384.
  385.
  386. >Having gently set you down atop the roof, Luna continues to maintain flight, hovering above the two-story building.
  387. >"Are thou ready, Anonymous?"
  388. >She better kick that habit when she begins terrorizing the populace, otherwise it'll diminish the look.
  389. >You nod, taking a moment to drop your hood.
  390. "Good hunting."
  391. >Appropriate words, you think.
  392. >Although she hides it well, you know Luna is practically giddy with excitement, and it's been rubbing off onto you.
  393. >The Night Princess offers you one final nefarious grin, beating her wings harder as she soars away.
  394. >"And to you as well!"
  395. >You watch Luna move up and into the distance, eventually disappearing inside a conveniently-placed cloud.
  396. >Now you wait.
  397. >You opt to sit down on the small roof, keeping the scythe's pointy end well away from you.
  398. >This vantage point offers a nice view.
  399. >The guards should have opened access to here by now. Any second now, the festivities will begin.
  400. >There's more than just you and Luna striking fear into the hearts of ponies. A whole slew of intricate props and magical what-nots have been carefully set up throughout the area.
  401. >The pair of you are the crème-de-la-crème of this event, and you intend to give these small horses the fright of their lives.
  402. >Looking down towards the dim streets, you see a few costumed ponies nervously wandering about, having finally gained entrance.
  403. >They aren't your targets. You have to wait for Luna first.
  404. >Just then, a booming voice rings through the air, nearly making you jump.
  405. >"CITIZENS OF CANTERLOT, HOW /WONDERFUL/ OF YOU TO JOIN US TONIGHT."
  406. >You snort as the ponies below shriek, a stallion scrambling to hide behind his friend.
  407. >"WE HAVE PREPARED A MOST FRIGHTENING EVENING. BUT, CAREFUL WHERE YOU WANDER, FOR THERE ARE /MORE/ THAN NIGHTMARES LURKING IN THE SHADOWS."
  408. >You smile to yourself.
  409. >"LET NIGHTMARE NIGHT, /BEGIN/!"
  410. >With one last hurrah, the cloud Luna was hiding in bursts into...
  411. >Bats?!
  412. >The flying mammals swoop down across the area, and you hear more shrieks erupt from unseen ponies.
  413. >Oh, she is good.
  414. >Luna herself has disappeared, leaving you to patiently wait for the signal.
  415. >Won't take long.
  416. >You bask in seeing various groups take wrong turns only to beat a hasty retreat, all the while screaming.
  417. >What got them this time? The acidic spiders? The spooky ghost pony? Ohhh, maybe the fake bottomless--
  418. >"AHHHHHH!!!"
  419. >You jolt as a chorus of screeches start up.
  420. >Looking below, you see a massive crowd of ponies in hysterics as they run from a cackling Luna, who flies closely above.
  421. >As they sprint, the crowd breaks off, ponies galloping down different streets in a desperate attempt to ward off their pursuer.
  422. >"Do you /honestly/ think splitting up will save you!?"
  423. >Evidently they do, because a group diverts down the narrow street you reside over.
  424. >You chuckle, giving a thumbs up to Luna, who winks knowingly before flying off.
  425. >It's show time.
  426. >Rising from your spot, you flip your hood up while grabbing the scythe.
  427. >Two-story drops aren't the safest methods of reaching the ground. Fortunately the shop next to you is only one-story, allowing you to start there.
  428. >Your landing is hard, but stable as you hit the cobblestone, finally level with the first of your unfortunate victims.
  429. >Holy crap, it is nearly pitch-black down here. You can barely see anything around you.
  430. >Did Luna fuck with the lighting? It really projects a tenser atmosphere.
  431. >"It's a dead end!"
  432. >That observation comes from an unseen mare, her voice stricken with panic.
  433. >Better not keep them waiting.
  434. >Despite the plethora of ponies moving around the area, this street is dead quiet, further adding to the effect.
  435. >You walk slowly but with purpose, each step a reminder of the role you play.
  436. >Cold, uncaring, and unyielding.
  437. >...
  438. >Well, you'll try your best.
  439. >"We have to go back!"
  440. >"What if Nightmare Moon is still there?! We're done, dude! WE'RE--"
  441. >"SHHHHHHH."
  442. >Immediately the frenzied ponies snuff their noise, only a few sniffles escaping.
  443. >Now their voices are frantic whispers.
  444. >"...Do you hear that?"
  445. >"What?... Oh."
  446. >You're getting closer.
  447. >"Somepony's coming!"
  448. >"Oh Celestia, it's Nightmare Moon!"
  449. >Jeez, saying they sound terrified would be a gross understatement. Are they /actually/ scared for their lives?
  450. >There's a small pang of doubt forming as you approach the group, closing enough distance to where you can finally see them and they see you.
  451. >Five ponies are huddled against each other, eyes wide with terror as you continue your slow gait.
  452. >The unicorn stallion closest to you speaks first, his costume strongly resembling a manticore.
  453. >"W-what are you?"
  454. >It's a miracle he can even speak with all the trembling in his tone.
  455. >You're seriously second-guessing putting the fear into these ponies. You swear one of them will have a heart attack if you continue.
  456. "I take many forms."
  457. >Despite your growing reluctance, you relish the low, guttural tone your voice has taken thanks to Luna. As long as your keep the decibels to a minimum, you sound like the lord of the underworld.
  458. >It's not the stallion, but a pegasus mare who responds. Her costume takes a moment for you to discern.
  459. >It's a sphinx.
  460. >"/Who/ are you?"
  461. >What.
  462. >That's enough to make you pause, but for different reasons.
  463. >When someone is trapped in an alleyway with a cloaked figure guarding the escape route, most people don't ask questions, let alone request clarification.
  464. >Yet here this pegasus is, shaking up a storm as she awaits your answer.
  465. >Now that you think about it, can't she just fly away? She'd be out of harm's way in an instant.
  466. >...
  467. >Wow.
  468. >These guys /really/ love Nightmare Night. Every single pony here could skedaddle in an instant or put you on your ass, but they choose to remain.
  469. >It's a game to them. They came expecting a spooktacular evening.
  470. >Better not disappoint them.
  471. >Any hesitation within you is quashed as you fight to remain callous, resuming your walk.
  472. "I am the darkness. I am your worst fear, forever lurking in the shadows."
  473. >The group shuffles backwards in terror as you approach, each pony desperate to stay behind another.
  474. "Do not run from the inevitable. You are only mortal."
  475. >Your infallible advice falls on deaf ears, everyone continuing to scramble until the furthest two hit a door.
  476. >"Oh no!"
  477. >Oh /yes/.
  478. "It will be all over soon, for I..."
  479. >You reach up with a free hand, letting your hood drop.
  480. "...Am the Grim Reaper."
  481. >Their pupils are pinpricks now, each pony tightly grabbing onto each other as they wait out their last moments.
  482. >"I don't wanna die!"
  483. >Fear not, small pony. You will go gently.
  484. >At last, you reach the frozen group, staring down coldly at them.
  485. >Pathetic.
  486. "Do not move."
  487. >Although you see different, a boney hand extends from your side, reaching out to the unlucky pony who was pushed to the front.
  488. >The circus master earth mare remains rooted to the spot, no friend to hold her in death.
  489. >How depressing.
  490. >As your hand reaches the mare, an ear-piercing, feminine shriek erupts from one of the stallions.
  491. >*Boop*
  492. >You bet she's confused as hell. Bone shouldn't feel that soft, eh?
  493. >You keep your finger on her nose for a few seconds before letting up, satisfied with your work.
  494. >Keeping up appearances, you remain silent and stone-faced as the group frantically alternates between looking at you and their incapacitated friend.
  495. >If you didn't know any better, you'd say they genuinely think the poor mare carked it.
  496. >"Cobblestone! Are you okay?!"
  497. "She is at peace now."
  498. >You can't help it, the over-dramatization is too strong to resist.
  499. >"What did you do to her?!"
  500. >Suddenly, Cobblestone giggles.
  501. >An actual, genuine giggle out of pure elation.
  502. >It's too much for you to bear, and a smile of your own forms.
  503. >Now Cobblestone's friends eye her as though she's gone mental.
  504. >This is one helluva turn of events for the once-petrified herd.
  505. >Their confused, bewildered stares is the final breaking point for you, and you laugh, your voice promptly returning to normal.
  506. >That's enough for them to snap to you.
  507. >You can see the pieces fall into place for each pony, and one by one they start to smile, smiles turning into nervous giggling, giggling into laughter.
  508. >You share a moment of relief with the ponies, who are undoubtedly glad to be safe... as they already were.
  509. >Eventually the good cheer dies down, and you take a few steps back to allow everyone to unpack themselves.
  510. >It's a miracle the ponies in the back could breathe, considering how tightly they were squeezed together.
  511. >One by one the ponies stretch. The unicorn/manticore is the first to unwind, and he address you with nothing short of awe.
  512. >"That was INCREDIBLE! I've never been more scared in my entire life!"
  513. >The others are quick to recover, and they quickly chime in with their own impressions.
  514. >"I was sure we were done for!"
  515. >"How did you make such a realistic skeleton?"
  516. >"I wasn't scared at all!"
  517. >"...Right. Refresh my memory, which pony screamed like a little filly?"
  518. >"...Shut up!"
  519. >You chuckle, fixing the scythe so it points at the ground.
  520. >Glad to see everyone having fun.
  521. "It's nothing more than an illusion, guys. Ask your friend Cobblestone."
  522. >Four heads turn to face the pearlescent mare, who still has a dreamy look, her hat dauntingly close to falling off.
  523. >"Your claw is surprisingly soft."
  524. "Finger. But yeah, this--"
  525. >You waggle your digits.
  526. "--Is Luna's work. I'm not actually a spooky skeleton."
  527. >Although there /is/ one inside you...
  528. >The ponies continue to marvel at your costume, making you feel a little prideful.
  529. >That /was/ fun. Both parties got what they wanted, and everyone felt great at the end.
  530. >You're really starting to look forward to the rest of the evening.
  531. >"Thank you Anon!"
  532. >Eh?
  533. >How would they know...
  534. >Duh, you're the only biped that frequents Canterlot.
  535. >A few others eagerly nod in agreement.
  536. >"Yeah, that was /super/ fun!"
  537. >You sheepishly scratch your nape, trying to divert the warm fuzzies.
  538. "Ah, well, the pleasure was mine."
  539. >As much as you'd love to stay here, you need to head over to the next strike zone. These ponies won't scare them--
  540. >Hold on a minute. You almost forgot.
  541. "Before I leave, I have a question for you guys..."
  542.
  543.
  544. >Your legs swing precariously over the edge as you rest your hands in your lap, looking out over Canterlot.
  545. >Normally sitting so close to the edge of an observatory tower would leave you thoroughly queasy, but if Luna's here, you highly doubt anything can go wrong.
  546. >Thus, you feel relatively calm as hooves make their way towards you, the dark(er) blue mare coming to a stop beside you.
  547. >Pssh, as if she'd ever be afraid of heights.
  548. >There's a blinding flash of light, and when it dissipates, the Luna you know and love is back.
  549. "I have to say, I prefer you like this."
  550. >"...We believe many ponies would agree with that sentiment."
  551. >The Night Princess is in a humorous mood as she takes to sitting next to you.
  552. >...
  553. >Oh goddammit.
  554. >Before you can reword your fuckup, a wing reaches out to envelop you, shielding you from the cool autumn air and gently sliding you until you're pressed against her side.
  555. >"We jest, Anonymous. Your words are sweet."
  556. >A comedian in the making, this one.
  557. >You lean into Luna, mentally telling your heart rate to stop fucking around and return to normal.
  558. >The pair of you are content to remain like this, quietly watching ponies move about as the night continues.
  559. >...Although something needs to be brought up.
  560. "...So, about that wager."
  561. >Luna shifts, though you can't see much of her thanks to the hood.
  562. >You'd take it off but you're pretty sure you still look like a skeleton. No need to ruin the moment.
  563. >Her tone is light as she replies.
  564. >"Thirty-two to thirty-two... Interesting."
  565. >You still can't believe you tied. Hell, all it would've taken is asking an odd-number of ponies and you would've had a definitive winner.
  566. "So it's a draw... Oh well."
  567. >"Hardly, Anonymous. We prefer to view it as a victory for both sides."
  568. >But if you both won...
  569. >Ahhh.
  570. >You nod, not adverse in the slightest to her suggestion.
  571. "One request each."
  572. >...
  573. "Okay, I'm curious. What do you have in mind for me?"
  574. >A short pause.
  575. >"We did not consider our options. We were only interested in the spirit of the competition."
  576. >How wholesome!
  577. >"And you, Anonymous? What plans have you devised for Us?"
  578. >You can't see her, but you know she's looking at you now.
  579. >At least she sounds curious.
  580. "I have no idea."
  581. >It's true; you didn't give it any thought either. Winning was enough for you.
  582. >You shrug.
  583. "I'll think of something later."
  584. >"Likewise."
  585. >That's enough for the pair of you to can it, resuming your city-gazing.
  586. >Today was pretty--
  587. >"Nightmare Night is coming to an end, Anonymous, but it is not over yet."
  588. >That's true, but you've done your job for the evening. A respectable number of ponies have been spooked.
  589. >"We have a request for thee."
  590. >Just that one word is enough for you to raise an eyebrow.
  591. >Something's revving her up.
  592. "A request?... Go on..."
  593. >Luna fidgets, likely due to her growing excitement.
  594. >"Sister has retired to her chambers for the night, and while she is aware of our antics this evening, We did not reveal thy costume. We ask that you provide her with a scare suitable for Nightmare Night."
  595. >Oh...
  596. >Ohhhhhh.
  597. >Uh...
  598. >You like Celestia. Respectful, wholesome banter is guaranteed whenever you meet with her.
  599. >She's not someone you've ever considered extensively messing with, and that's not because she controls the goddamn sun.
  600. >Buuuut, you know she's capable of taking a joke.
  601. >Not to mention it's Luna who asked you. She understands her sister more than anyone.
  602. >Alright, time to frighten the Sun Princess!
  603. >You raise a hand, holding up two fingers as you respond.
  604. "Two things. One: If she gets mad, I'm gonna point two fingers and say it's /your/ fault."
  605. >You poke her wing for emphasis, to which a cobalt aura tickles your hand.
  606. >Freaky.
  607. "Secondly... How is this gonna work."
  608.
  609.
  610. >For the umpteenth time this evening, Luna releases her magical hold on you, allowing you to stand on your own as she also touches down.
  611. >This is one hell of a balcony. Good size, good view, the works.
  612. >All it needs is a fucking guard.
  613. >Seriously, it shouldn't be that easy for you and Luna to waltz in.
  614. >These ponies need some serious security overhauls.
  615. >Done with your internal rambling, you eye the large windows and glass door keeping you from your target.
  616. >Not a curtain to be found. Figures.
  617. >"Thou may enter when ready, Anonymous. We will awaken Sister for thee."
  618. >She glances over to the room, and it's impossible to miss the mischievous grin adorning her face.
  619. >Good ol' sisterly love.
  620. >You stifle a laugh, loath to wake Celestia up before needed.
  621. "Alright... It's go time."
  622. >Squeezing the staff of the scythe, you make you way over to the balcony door as Luna's horn light's up for her departure into the Dream Realm.
  623. >The door opens outward with minimal noise, allowing you to step inside and close it.
  624. >You're in Princess Celestia's personal quarters now. You've never been here before... mainly because you've never had a reason to.
  625. >Only your steady breathing is heard as you look around in the darkness.
  626. >You'd probably appreciate the place more if you could see well.
  627. >Further in, against the wall opposite you, is a bed. A large one at that.
  628. >Within said bed, you can make out a pony of rather large proportions resting, head facing the ceiling as she snoozes.
  629. >What an odd position for a pony to sleep in.
  630. >...Then again, their limbs completely break the normal rules of quadrupeds.
  631. >You're less than surprised to see her colorful mane waving about even while she sleeps.
  632. >Luna's does it, why would Celestia be an exception.
  633. >You approach the bed, your footsteps deafening in the silent room.
  634. >Suddenly she shifts, her hooves poking out of the top of the covers.
  635. >While normally you'd "d'awww" and chalk it up to sweet dreams, you know Luna is playing a part in this.
  636. >In fact, a brief glance behind you shows no signs of the Night Princess on the balcony.
  637. >She said she'd keep watch to make sure nothing goes off the rails, but where the hell did she go?
  638. >Whatever. You have a Sun Princess to scare.
  639. >Instead of waiting for her to fully awaken, you opt to help speed up the process.
  640. "Awaken, Princess of the Sun."
  641. >/Damn/ you love this voice. Maybe if you don't say anything, Luna will forget and let you keep it.
  642. >In a few seconds, Celestia goes from barely conscious to groggy but on alert, albeit confused.
  643. >"Mmm?"
  644. >While her head remains in place, her eyes shift to view the source of the ruckus.
  645. >Here we go...
  646. >In a flash, Celestia sits up, and the tip of her horn glows with light only rivaled by the sun, leaving no corner untouched with its illumination.
  647. >Despite that, it doesn't hurt to look at.
  648. >Magic is great, ain't it?
  649. >Just like Luna, Celestia has foregone wearing her jewelry and royal attire in favor of comfort.
  650. >...Lewd.
  651. >You dispel that thought, continuing your act.
  652. "I hope your dream was pleasant, for it will be your /last/."
  653. >Celestia, to your surprise, is more confused than scared.
  654. >In fact, there's no trace of fear anywhere on her visage. She appears completely serious, if not somewhat puzzled.
  655. >You don't know what you were expecting, but this probably should've been it.
  656. >Why would an alicorn fear anything?
  657. >You better not get blasted for this, or you'll be pissed, to say the least.
  658. >"How did you... No, /who/ are..."
  659. >Despite her recent awakening and failure to find a proper question, Celestia's voice sounds just as soft and gentle as if she's been up and about for hours.
  660. "Your questions are of no concern to me. Do not stall, Celestia."
  661. >That only furthers her perplexity, and for a second, she opens her mouth to respond.
  662. >Suddenly, a switch is flicked.
  663. >Celestia's eyes go wide for the faintest of moments before she rolls her eyes, shaking her head.
  664. >"Luna, you can quit the theatrics."
  665. >Well she's half-right.
  666. >You remain a statue of stone, not even responding.
  667. >The Sun Princess eyes you knowingly, the corners of her mouth raising.
  668. >"...Or should I say, Anonymous. Did you collaborate with Luna to try and scare me for Nightmare Night?"
  669. >Now you twitch, the scythe shifting in your grasp.
  670. >God, it's ridiculous just how on the money she /always/ is.
  671. >While all the signs point towards the jig being up, you're not quite ready to throw in the towel.
  672. >There's one more thing she hasn't seen.
  673. "I go by many names, and 'Anonymous' is not one. Your ignorance will not save you, Celestia."
  674. >Despite your threat, Celestia is still mildly tickled at your attempt, tittering as she studies your costume.
  675. >"I must say, Luna kept your costume simple, yet mysterious. Light does not pass through your hood. And giving you a scythe? A perfect addition..."
  676. >Her voice trails off as her eyes reach the hand gripping your weapon.
  677. >You say nothing, merely flexing your digits as she silently studies it.
  678. >Despite her inability to see your face, your expression is flat so as to stay in character.
  679. >Perhaps you should say something else.
  680. >Finally, Celestia looks up, gazing you in the eye.
  681. >Her amused look is gone, replaced with something you can't quite put your finger on.
  682. >You have no idea how she feels, or what she's thin--
  683. >A sharp burst of air hits your face, forcing your eyes shut.
  684. >Even through that, you don't move, choosing to let your hood drop down.
  685. >When you're certain nothing more is coming, you reopen them.
  686. >Celestia's horn is still lit, a brilliant gold aura now surrounding it.
  687. >You never saw the damn thing light up. She's /fast/.
  688. >The Sun Princess is once again regarding you and your bare skull with confusion, but there's something else...
  689. >Trepidation.
  690. >'That's not Anon... is it?'
  691. >Oh yeah, you can work with this.
  692. >You begin taking slow, deliberate steps, moving yourself so your path will take you to the side of her bed.
  693. "I have grown tired of your games."
  694. >With one fluid movement, Celestia slides out of her bed, taking to all fours as she faces you.
  695. >Her stance, simple as it looks, is a dead giveaway to her current mood.
  696. >The casual, yet regal posture she normally carries is gone.
  697. >Instead, her legs are spread just barely more than normal, allowing her more solid footing... /just in case/.
  698. >Armed with this knowledge, you feel far more confident as you approach her.
  699. "You move the sun, Celestia. The sun, and no more. You are not a deity. You are no demigod. You are an alicorn, and you. Are. /Mortal/."
  700. >It's now that you detect a sliver of doubt, a pinch of nervousness forming in her expression that only grows as you near.
  701. >Good.
  702. "Your time is up; you are no exception to me. You are an alicorn, but I am /Death/. No living being escapes my hold."
  703. >You've nearly reached Celestia.
  704. >Her stoical expression has almost completely eroded, and you can see the fear in her eyes.
  705. >Fear. Genuine fear from Celestia.
  706. >Incredible.
  707. "Fear me, Celestia. I am the /End/, and I have come for you."
  708. >Suddenly, she changes.
  709. >What was once terror morphs into determination as her horn lights up, pointing directly at you.
  710. >Your grim mood drops in a heartbeat, eyes going wide as you realize what's about to happen.
  711. >Oh shi--
  712. >You're never given a chance to react as a flash of light erupts near the two of you, making you grimace.
  713. >That alone is enough to make Celestia abruptly stop, her horn losing power, although the tip remains lit.
  714. >"We are thrilled to see thou take the initiative, Sister, but Anonymous prefers to remain alive and intact, a preference We wholeheartedly share."
  715. >Both of you look over to the source of the light, where a dark blue alicorn sits, cheerfully observing the commotion.
  716. >She's shaking, a hoof poorly covering her mouth as she suppresses snickers.
  717. >Celestia stares at her shorter sister in silence for a few seconds before turning to you.
  718. >Her expression is incredulous, and you're quick to throw Luna to the sharks.
  719. >Your scythe is raised to point at the Night Princess, who's rapidly losing composure.
  720. "It's her fault."
  721. >Celestia continues to stare at you, making you shift in place uncomfortably.
  722. >You don't wanna be sent to the moon!
  723. >That's when she chuckles.
  724. >The Sun Princess' act is enough to open the floodgates for Luna, who proceeds to burst into laughter, lying down on the floor so she can kick her hooves in joy.
  725. >What you initially mistook for incredulity turns out to be amazement, Celestia's melodic voice joining in on her sibling's merriment, although she chooses to sit instead.
  726. >You'd have to be a stone-cold sumbitch for their mirth to not rub off on you, so you chuckle, smiling as you realize everything worked out just fine.
  727. >Do all ponies get a kick out of Nightmare Night? Neat.
  728. >It takes a minute for Celestia to work the laughter out of her system and two for Luna, but eventually the sister's calm down, Luna wiping moisture from her eyes.
  729. >The Sun Princess is the first to speak.
  730. >"It was silly of me to think the pair of you would be occupied elsewhere for the entirety of Nightmare Night."
  731. >"A grievous mistake, Sister."
  732. >Luna giggles.
  733. >Man, you've /never/ seen her like this. It's like she's a rambunctious child.
  734. >Celestia merely nods, smiling as she turns to you.
  735. >"Indeed. I did not expect Anonymous to play his part so well."
  736. >So well she almost turned you into ashes... you think.
  737. >You absently tug on a sleeve, pretending to be embarrassed by her compliment.
  738. "Nonsense. It was all thanks to Luna. There's no way it would've been as good without the kick-ass voice and spooky skeleton."
  739. >Luna tries to interject but her sister continues first.
  740. >"Then it was a team effort, and I greatly enjoyed both of your performances."
  741. "Thanks."
  742. >Luna finally pipes up.
  743. >"Tell Us, Sister! What were thy thoughts when Anonymous revealed himself? When thou blasted away his hood, uncovering his skull? Tell Us!"
  744. >Dear god, this is the equivalent of Twilight on the brink of discovering something new.
  745. >Celestia chuckles, reaching over to lay a hoof on her sister's shoulder as she addresses her.
  746. >"I would be glad to... /tomorrow/. I do believe I was in the middle of a pleasant dream before /somepony/ woke me up."
  747. >Her tone is teasing as she lightly prods Luna, who pouts in disappointment.
  748. >".../Fine/. We will attend breakfast and thou /will/ divulge thy secrets!"
  749. >"I promise."
  750. >You snort.
  751. >Looking at the hilarious exchange going on between them, it's REALLY obvious who the older sister is.
  752. >Minor conflict settled, Celestia removes her hoof as Luna jumps to all fours.
  753. >"Excellent! Come, Anonymous. Sister needs her rest."
  754. >You stare dumbly at the Night Princess as she trots to the doors, opening it.
  755. >...
  756. >"Luna has always derived great pleasure from Nightmare Night, Anonymous."
  757. >That came from Celestia, who rises to stand as Luna departs the room.
  758. >You make no attempt to hide your grin, an eyebrow raising.
  759. "I noticed."
  760. >"I am glad she could spend it with someone she cares about."
  761. >Now the Sun Princess grins as yours disappears, your face desperately searching for a suitable expression outside of bashful.
  762. >Seriously, stomach, get your shit together.
  763. >Eventually you settle for a dumb smile, knowing full well you look like a fool.
  764. "Well... It goes both ways, y'know?"
  765. >Celestia nods, making you feel slightly relieved.
  766. >"Anonymous?"
  767. >That would be Luna calling you from the hallway.
  768. >The mare before you motions with her head towards the doors.
  769. >"Your /friend/ is waiting."
  770. "And I should join her. Good call."
  771. >You raise a hand in farewell.
  772. "Night, Celestia."
  773. >"Good night, Anonymous."
  774. >With that, you depart, swiftly exiting the room.
  775. >Your steps falter as you pass by the two guards stationed outside her room, your face twisting in disbelief.
  776. >Did they not hear a /damn thing/ inside there or what?!
  777. >What if it wasn't you, but some psycho?
  778. >You know Celestia is more than capable of handling herself, but goddamn, these guards are deaf.
  779. >The doors close behind you as you rejoin Luna, who was patiently waiting not far from the entrance.
  780. >Back together, the pair of you begin walking as she glances up to you.
  781. >"Allow Us to undo our work."
  782. >Before you can respond, a beam of cobalt magic strikes your arm, spreading like a virus over your body.
  783. >Once again, you feel nothing, but you'll assume you're back to your handsome, rugged looks.
  784. >Behind you, you barely make out two sighs of relief.
  785. >Yeah, you're normal again.
  786. >The scythe in your hand disappears with a pop, making you quietly whine.
  787. >Dammit, even your voice is stable.
  788. >Tonight, you mourn.
  789. >"We have to say, We prefer you like this."
  790. >You look down to Luna, who has a cheeky grin going on.
  791. "Me too. But I gotta admit, I'm gonna miss being Mr. Bones."
  792. >"There is always next year."
  793. "...True."
  794. >A lull in conversation follows as you walk, but as always, it doesn't feel unnatural.
  795. >Besides, you know what to say next.
  796. "I had a lot of fun tonight, Luna. Didn't think I'd enjoy terrifying ponies, but it was one helluva night."
  797. >You smile.
  798. "Thanks."
  799. >The Night Princess's expression mirrors your own.
  800. >"And thank /you/, Anonymous, for joining Us this evening. Nightmare Night was everything We dreamed it to be and more. We are glad We could spend it together with you."
  801. >God, you'd do anything to turn your stomach into iron.
  802. "Me too."
  803. >You hope your voice sounds normal, cuz you sure as hell don't feel the same.
  804. >You need something to calm you down.
  805. >...
  806. >Idea!
  807. "Hey, I know what I want as my Nightmare Night reward."
  808. >Luna's gaze drifts up to you.
  809. >"And that would be...?"
  810. "Teleport us."
  811. >You'll admit, you've been tired for a while now, and walking who-knows how many yards to your room sounds kinda unpleasant.
  812. >So, what better way than to fast travel?
  813. >To your surprise, Luna frowns, tilting her head in disapproval.
  814. >"Anonymous, you /are/ aware of what occurred the last time We attempted so?"
  815. >You are, and you have a good idea of why that happened.
  816. "Yeah, but that time I wasn't aware. Since now I know we'll be teleporting, this should go /much/ better!"
  817. >Your logic is infallible, and Luna must know that because she doesn't put up any further argument outside of a reluctant stare as her magical aura envelops her horn.
  818. >Alright Anon, you know what's coming.
  819. >There's that weird sensation again.
  820. >Okay brain, remember--
  821. >You're somewhere else.
  822. >Once again your brain is reduced to basic understanding, but this time you know what to do.
  823. >Stay upright, dammit!
  824. >Sadly your legs don't get the memo, and you begin to tilt backwards.
  825. >Before you can reclaim your position on the floor, a cobalt aura freezes you.
  826. >"At least you aimed to fall on your back."
  827. >There's a hint of amusement in Luna's tone as your brain reboots, realizing that you failed again.
  828. >Crap.
  829. >Luna straightens you out before releasing her hold, moving past the guards and opening the doors.
  830. >You huff in defeat, but follow her.
  831. >...And stop.
  832. >This is not your room.
  833. >In fact, as you look around, you realize you've never even been down this hallway... you think.
  834. "Uhhh... Where are we?"
  835. >Luna merely glances back to you ask she heads inside, her voice strong enough to carry behind her.
  836. >"This is Our chambers. We thought it refreshing to retire here for the evening, seeing as you have never stepped hoof inside."
  837. >Oh.
  838. >...
  839. >Head, you need to get out of the gutter.
  840. >Again.
  841. >There is absolutely nothing unusual about Luna inviting you to her bedroom.
  842. >Anything you've done in your room, you'll end up doing here.
  843. >Like, uh... hand/hoof-holding.
  844. >...You sick bastard.
  845. >Shaking your head to dispel the lewd thoughts, you stroll inside, taking care to shut the doors before examining her fortress of solitude.
  846. >It's... small.
  847. >Well, smaller than you expected.
  848. >Despite the dim lighting, you can tell the room is painted with dark colors, likely variants of blue.
  849. >Various wooden furniture has been strategically placed about, adding to the atmosphere.
  850. >Looking to your left, you see that Luna also has a balcony, though she keeps the windows curtained off.
  851. >Nice.
  852. >The biggest attention-grabber lies just off-center: her bed.
  853. >You can't help but grin, muttering to yourself as you ogle the crescent-moon frame.
  854. >Definitely not what you were expecting, but you think it's dope as hell.
  855. >"Does Our bed fulfill your expectations?"
  856. >Luna has wandered over to a table, removing her crown and necklace to place on top of it.
  857. >You scoff, moving to join her.
  858. "As long as it supports the two of us, I'm happy... But for real, your bed is /awesome/."
  859. >Luna chuckles, trotting towards her bed as you reach the table
  860. >"We agree, it /is/ a marvelous sight to behold."
  861. >Off goes the robe, along with your shoes and socks as you begin to undress while still observing Luna.
  862. >The Night Princess carefully steps out of her slippers, leaving her void of any ornaments as she climbs atop her mattress.
  863. >Your shirt is next to go and finally, your pants. You leave both draped not-so-neatly over a chair's backrest, then make to join her.
  864. >There's nothing weird about sleeping in just your boxers in the same bed with a pony princess. You've done this so many times it's second nature.
  865. >Although Luna is facing you, she flips over as you approach, leaving her back towards you.
  866. >No, it's not a rebuff.
  867. >Whenever the two of you end up in your room after a long day, you're both only interested in one thing: sleep.
  868. >Despite this being Luna's room, tonight is no exception.
  869. >You carefully ease your way onto the bed, the star-riddled covers digging into your exposed skin as you lie down.
  870. >Luna's mane tickles your face as you reach over and across her side, wrapping your arm around her until you can press her back against your chest.
  871. >Ahh, spooning. The ultimate form of affection.
  872. >An unseen object touches your hand, and you realize she's holding it.
  873. >Nice.
  874. >Shuffling over, silence fills the air as the pair of you slowly drift off into the Sandman's embrace.
  875. >God you're drained.
  876. >Today was great though.
  877. >Now... just...
  878. >Your heart is shocked back to life as Luna fidgets in your arms.
  879. >Dammit, you were seconds away from losing consciousness.
  880. >Your brain is operating at half-power, but it's enough to realize she's doing more than fidgeting.
  881. >Luna shimmies over a little until she can turn around without rolling on top of you.
  882. >Now you're both facing each other.
  883. >It's hard to see her expression, but you think she's smiling as she whispers.
  884. >"Anonymous."
  885. >That's you!
  886. >Your voice is a garbled mess, but you soldier on.
  887. "Yeah?"
  888. >Your noses are almost touching.
  889. >"We have decided on Our reward for Nightmare Night."
  890. >You blink a few times, more out of tiredness than confusion.
  891. >Seriously, her face is close to yours.
  892. "What?"
  893. >Luna doesn't respond.
  894. >She's really, /really/--
  895. >...
  896. >......
  897. >Luna finally breaks from you, smiling as she wraps a foreleg around you and nestles into your neck, careful to avoid sticking you with her horn.
  898. >To compliment the ordeal, a wing stretches out before draping itself over you.
  899. >"Goodnight, Anonymous."
  900. >...
  901. >You wish you could fall asleep.
